Vibrations:
- Prolonged use may result in vibration-induced circulation problems (whitefinger disease).
- Usage length depends on factors like hand protection, work breaks, personal circulation, and outside temperatures.
- Monitor hand and finger condition regularly.
3 Reactive Forces
Common reactive forces include kickback, pushback, and pull-in.
Dangers of kickback:
- Kickback can result in serious or fatal injury.
- Kickback occurs when the saw is suddenly thrown up and back towards the operator.
- This can happen when the upper quadrant of the bar nose contacts wood or another object, or when the chain is pinched in the cut.
Quickstop chain brake:
- This device reduces injury risk but cannot prevent kickback. When activated, it stops the saw chain within a fraction of a second.
To reduce the risk of kickback:
- Work cautiously and avoid kickback-inducing situations.
- Hold the saw firmly with both hands and maintain a secure grip.
- Always cut at full throttle.
- Be aware of the guide bar nose location at all times.
- Do not cut with the bar nose.
- Take care with small, tough limbs that may catch the chain.
- Never cut several limbs at once.
- Do not overreach.
- Never cut above shoulder height.
- Use extreme caution when re-entering a previous cut.
- Do not attempt plunge cuts unless experienced.
- Be alert for shifting logs or other forces that may cause the cut to close and pinch the chain.
- Always cut with a correctly sharpened, properly tensioned chain with the correct depth gauge setting.
- Use a low kickback chain and a narrow radius guide bar.
Pull-in:
- Occurs when the chain on the bottom of the bar is pinched, caught, or encounters a foreign object. The chain pulls the saw forward.
- STIHL recommends retrofitting the spiked bumper when working on impervious wood.
Pushback:
- Occurs when the chain on the top of the bar is pinched, caught, or encounters a foreign object. The chain drives the saw straight back toward the operator.
- Avoid situations where the top of the guide bar may be pinched.
- Do not twist the guide bar in the cut.
4 Working Techniques
Sawing:
- Do not operate the saw in the starting throttle position.
- Work calmly and carefully in daylight with good visibility. Ensure you do not endanger others.
- Use the shortest possible guide bar; chain, guide bar, and chain sprocket must match.
- Position the saw so your body is clear of the cutting attachment.
- If conditions allow, work from a lift bucket.
- Never work on a ladder or insecure support, or above shoulder height.
- Cordon off the work area to reduce the risk of injuries from falling branches.
- When working with a lifeline, use double lifelines to reduce the risk of fall injuries.
- Take special care when cutting through a limb. Hold the machine firmly to control feed force. At the end of the cut, support the full weight of the chainsaw.
- Ensure the saw does not touch foreign materials (stones, nails) to avoid damage and unexpected kickback.
- If a rotating saw chain hits a stone, sparks may ignite flammable materials. Avoid using the chainsaw in areas with easily combustible materials, especially in dry weather. Consult forestry authorities regarding fire hazards.
- Caution! To avoid electrocution, take precautions when cutting near power lines. Have power switched off before starting.
- Do not underbuck freely hanging limbs (risk of pinch and kickback).
- Be careful when cutting scrub and young trees (shoots can be scooped up).
- Be careful when cutting splintered wood (risk of injury from ejected pieces).
- After finishing a cut, activate the chain brake or shut down the engine before moving the saw.
Cutting techniques:
- Begin cutting with the chain saw at full throttle.
- Pull the saw out of the cut with the chain running.
- Cut straight through thin limbs.
- For thick limbs, make a relieving cut from below (approx. 1/5 of diameter), then buck from above.
- Support and secure heavy branches with ropes.
- If the saw gets pinched in the cut: Shut off the engine, secure the saw to the tree, carefully free the saw using another saw if necessary.
- Limbs under tension: Always start relieving cut (1) at the compression side (A). Then make bucking cut (2) at the tension side (B). If not possible, make the bucking cut from the bottom upwards (underbuck) – beware of pushback.
5 Cutting Attachment
The cutting attachment consists of the saw chain, guide bar, and chain sprocket. The standard cutting attachment is designed to match the chainsaw. The pitch of the saw chain, chain sprocket, and guide bar nose sprocket must match. The drive link gauge of the saw chain must match the groove width of the guide bar. Using non-matching components can damage the cutting attachment.
6 Mounting the Bar and Chain
Disengage the chain brake: Pull the hand guard towards the front handle until an audible click is heard.
Removing the chain sprocket cover: Rotate the captive nut counterclockwise until loose. Remove the sprocket cover.
Mounting the Guide Bar: Turn the screw left until the tensioner slide butts against the housing slot. Fit the guide bar over the stud and engage the peg of the tensioner slide in the hole.
7 Tensioning the Saw Chain (side chain tensioner)
Retensioning during cutting work:
- Switch off the engine.
- Loosen the nut.
- Hold the bar nose up.
- Use a screwdriver to turn the tensioning screw clockwise until the chain fits snugly against the underside of the bar.
- While holding the bar nose up, tighten the nut firmly.
- Refer to "Checking Chain Tension".
A new chain requires more frequent retensioning. Check chain tension frequently.
8 Checking Chain Tension
- Shut off the engine.
- Wear work gloves.
- The chain must fit snugly against the underside of the bar but still be pullable by hand.
- If necessary, retension the chain.
Check chain tension frequently.
9 Fuel
The engine requires a mixture of gasoline and engine oil.
WARNING: Avoid skin contact with fuel and breathing gasoline fumes.
STIHL MotoMix:
- STIHL recommends MotoMix for its quality, octane rating, and benzene/lead-free composition.
- MotoMix uses STIHL HP Ultra two-stroke engine oil.
- MotoMix may not be available in all markets.
Mixing fuel:
- NOTICE: Unsuitable fuels or incorrect mixing ratios can cause severe engine damage.
- Gasoline: Use high-quality gasoline with an octane rating of at least 90 ROC. Gasoline with over 10% alcohol may impair performance in engines with manually adjustable carburetors. Engines with M-Tronic can use gasoline with up to 27% alcohol (E27).
- Engine oil: Use only STIHL two-stroke engine oil or other high-performance oil classified as JASO FB, JASO FC, JASO FD, ISO-L-EGB, ISO-L-EGC, or ISO-L-EGD. STIHL HP Ultra is recommended for emission limits.
Mixing ratio:
- STIHL two-stroke engine oil 1:50; 1:50 = 1 part oil + 50 parts gasoline.
Examples:
Quantity of gasoline (Liters) | STIHL two-stroke engine oil 1:50 (ml) |
---|---|
1 | 0.02 (20) |
5 | 0.10 (100) |
10 | 0.20 (200) |
15 | 0.30 (300) |
20 | 0.40 (400) |
25 | 0.50 (500) |
- Pour oil into an approved safety fuel canister first, then add gasoline and mix thoroughly.
Storing fuel mixture:
- Store in approved safety fuel canisters in a dry, cool, secure place protected from light and sunlight.
- Fuel mixture deteriorates with age; mix only as needed. Do not store for longer than 30 days.
- STIHL MotoMix can be stored for up to 5 years.

There should be a small amount of chain oil in the tank when the fuel tank is empty. If the oil tank is empty, check the oil supply system, clean oil passages, or contact a dealer.
STIHL recommends maintenance and repair work be carried out by authorized STIHL dealers.
13 Checking Chain Lubrication
The saw chain must always spin off a small amount of oil.
NOTICE:
- Never operate the machine without chain lubrication. Dry running can quickly damage the cutting attachment.
- Check chain lubrication and oil level before starting work.
- New chains need a run-in time of 2-3 minutes.
- After run-in, check chain tension and correct if necessary.
14 Chain Brake
Locking the Chain:
- The chain brake is activated by pushing the hand guard toward the bar nose or by inertia in kickback situations. The chain is stopped and locked.
Disengaging the Chain Brake:
- Pull the hand guard towards the front handle until an audible click is heard.
NOTICE: Always disengage the chain brake before accelerating the engine (except for checking operation) and before starting cutting work. High revs with the chain brake engaged will damage the powerhead and chain drive.
The chain brake is also activated by the inertia of the front hand guard during kickback.
The chain brake operates only if the hand guard has not been modified.
Checking Operation of the Chain Brake:
- Run engine at idle speed, engage chain brake, open throttle wide for no more than 3 seconds. The chain must not rotate. The hand guard must be free from dirt and move freely.
Chain Brake Maintenance:

Installing the spark plug:
- Install spark plug, connect boot firmly. Reassemble other parts in reverse sequence.
23 Storing the Machine
For periods of about 30 days or longer:
- Drain and clean the fuel tank in a well-ventilated area. Dispose of fuel properly.
- If a manual fuel pump is fitted, press it at least 5 times. Start engine and run at idle until it stops.
- Remove saw chain and guide bar; clean and spray with protective oil.
- Thoroughly clean the machine, paying attention to cylinder fins and air filter.
- When using biological chain oil (e.g., STIHL BioPlus), fill the lubricant oil tank.
- Store the machine in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children and unauthorized persons.
24 Checking the Chain Sprocket
- Disengage the chain brake.
- Remove chain sprocket cover, saw chain, and guide bar.
Replace the chain sprocket:
- Replace after using two saw chains or sooner if wear marks on the sprocket are deeper than approx. 0.5 mm. Using two chains alternately helps preserve the chain sprocket.
- STIHL recommends original STIHL chain sprockets for optimal chain brake function.
- Have the chain sprocket replaced by an authorized dealer.
25 Maintaining and Sharpening the Saw Chain
Sawing effortlessly with a properly sharpened saw chain:
- A properly sharpened chain cuts effortlessly.
- Never use a dull or damaged chain; it leads to increased physical strain, vibration load, unsatisfactory results, and wear.
- Clean the saw chain.
- Check the saw chain for cracks and damaged rivets.
- Replace damaged or worn chain components.
- Carbide-tipped (Duro) saw chains are wear-resistant. For optimal sharpening, STIHL recommends servicing dealers.
WARNING: Improperly sharpened chains, especially with low depth gauges, can increase kickback tendency and risk of injury.
Chain pitch:
- The chain pitch marking is embossed in the depth gauge area of each cutter.
Sharpening and side plate angles:
- STIHL saw chains are sharpened with a 30° sharpening angle. Ripping chains have a 10° sharpening angle.
- The correct side plate angle results automatically when using the specified file holder and file diameter.
- Angles must be identical for all cutters. Varying angles cause rough running and increased wear.
File holder:
- Always use a file holder (special accessory) for hand sharpening. File holders have markings for the sharpening angle.
- Use only special saw chain files.
To check the angles:
- Use a STIHL filing gauge (special accessory).
Proper sharpening:
- Select sharpening tools according to chain pitch.
- Clamp guide bar if necessary.
- Block saw chain by pushing the hand guard forward.
- To advance the saw chain, pull the hand guard toward the handlebar. The chain brake is disengaged. With Quickstop Super, press the throttle trigger lockout.
- Sharpen frequently, removing little material (two or three strokes of the file).
- Guide the file horizontally at a right angle to the side surface of the guide bar, according to the markings on the file holder. Rest the file holder on the tooth head and depth gauge.
- File only from the inside outward.
- The file sharpens on the forward stroke; lift the file on the backstroke.
- Do not file tie straps and drive links.
- Rotate the file periodically to avoid uneven wear.
- To remove file burr, use a piece of hardwood.
- Check angle with file gauge.
- All cutters must be equally long.
Depth gauge setting:
- The depth gauge determines how deep the cutter penetrates the wood.
- Required distance between depth gauge and cutting edge: When cutting softwood outside the frost season, increase distance by up to 0.2 mm.
- Use the appropriate file gauge for the chain pitch. Press it against the cutter. If the depth gauge protrudes past the file gauge, it must be reworked.
- Rework the depth gauge so it is flush with the file gauge.
WARNING: The rest of the humped drive link must not be filed; otherwise, this could increase the tendency of the chain saw to kick back.
Lowering the depth gauges:
- The depth gauge setting is lowered when the cutter is sharpened.
- Check the depth gauge setting after each sharpening.
- Dress the leading edge of the depth gauge parallel to the service mark, being careful not to further lower the highest point of the depth gauge.
- Depth gauges that are too low increase kickback tendency.
- Lay the file gauge on the saw chain; the highest point of the depth gauge must be flush with the file gauge.
- After sharpening, clean the saw chain thoroughly, removing filings or dust. Lubricate the saw chain thoroughly.
- For extended periods of disuse, store saw chains in cleaned and oiled condition.
