Top Reasons Why Pizza Stones Crack

  • Putting a cold baking stone into a hot oven.
  • Allowing moisture into the baking stone.
  • Placing cool or cold food onto the baking stone.
  • Handling the stone too much.
  • Removing the stone too soon from a hot oven.
  • Using too much heat.

How To Prevent Your Pizza Stone From Cracking In The Future

  • Maintain your stone in your oven at all times. Cover with aluminum foil to prevent discoloration from drips.
  • Always place a stone into a cool stove and perform a long pre-heat.
  • Minimize handling; moving in and out of the stove can cause cracking.
  • Avoid cleaning or oiling the stone, as moisture can cause it to split.
  • Wait until the stone is entirely cool before removing it from the oven.
  • Do not place icy pizzas on your pizza stone.
  • Use a folded towel when placing the stone on the counter to prevent thermal shock.
