3. General

3.1 Description of the Drum Filter

The Bio-drum and/or drum filter consists of a drum sieve driven by an electro-motor, including control electronics and a rinse pump. It filters and discharges floating particles, dirt, and algal remains. Bio-drums have an additional space for organic filter material (e.g., Helix) with an air stone or disc.

This drum filter is designed for use in ponds with fresh water only.

Water flows into the drum's inlet openings. Dirt is trapped by the mesh. As the cloth becomes more polluted, water flow decreases. The water level behind the drum falls, activating a sensor. The sensor signals the electronics, which activate the drum motor and rinse pump. The drum rotates, and the rinse pump sprays the mesh clean. Waste water is collected in a duct and flows out, potentially to a sewer. After a standard 14-second rinse, the electronics deactivate, and the drum stops rotating.

3.2 Warnings

Only staff with sufficient knowledge of drum filters and international accident prevention regulations may perform maintenance. Connection and settings must comply with applicable electrical regulations.

3.3 Used Symbols and Warnings

⚠️ WARNING – ELECTRICAL DANGER! LIFE-THREATENING!

Electric shocks can cause death or serious injury, or equipment damage. Ensure unauthorized persons cannot access or contact the device. Disconnect power before working. Do not use if the power supply is not correctly connected to earth.

PLEASE NOTE! ROTATING PARTS! AUTOMATIC RESTART!

Take measures to secure rotating parts against physical contact during operation, as they can be a source of danger.

CAUTION!

Before connecting, check the filter for damage. Carefully inspect power cables and plugs.

Please note:

4. Usage of the Filter

Only use the filter when no body parts are in contact with the water. Always disconnect the filter from the socket before touching the water.

Compare electrical specifications on the type plate with the power supply connection. Ensure the device is connected to a socket with earth and a ground leak switch with a maximum residual current of 30 mA (DIN VDE 0100T739). Use only with a correctly installed socket.

Keep the plug and wiring dry. Protect cables to prevent damage and short-circuits.

THE ELECTRICAL WIRING AND/OR PLUGS MAY NOT BE CUT (THROUGH). DOING SO WILL CAUSE THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY AND LIABILITY TO EXPIRE IMMEDIATELY.

Use only approved outdoor cables, installations, adapters, and extension cables with earthed plugs (DIN VDE 0620) and sufficient diameter. Replace damaged or broken wiring. Ensure the plug does not fall into or get wet; clean wet plugs with demineralised water and dry them. Protect plugs and cables from heat, oil, UV-light, and sharp corners. The manufacturer is not responsible for damage caused by incorrect installation or user carelessness.

Cables may not be altered or replaced. Electrical installations must comply with national and international requirements. Never open the control electronics casing or make technical modifications. Use only original parts and accessories. Only authorized dealers may perform repairs.

Never use the filter with liquids other than water.

5. Application Fields

The Bio-drums or drum filters are suitable for filtering fresh or slightly brackish water.

6. Installation/Connection

Read the manual carefully before installation. Damage from failing to observe the manual is not covered by warranty.

When unpacking, check if all parts are complete and undamaged. Report any damage to your supplier within 24 hours. Check the filter for damage before use. Do not use a damaged filter; warranty and liability will expire if used while damaged.

⚠️ The filter must not be connected to the power supply during installation. Remove the plug and ensure the filter cannot be activated. To prevent injury, ensure hands/fingers cannot reach rotating parts when connected to power.

7. Commissioning of the Filter

NEVER USE THE DEVICE WITHOUT WATER FLOW.

☔️ KEEP DRY

The drum motor must be stored dry; otherwise, the warranty will be void.

7.1 Positioning of the Filter

Follow regulations below for safe operation and to prevent device damage.

Note: Damage from freezing water is not covered by warranty.

7.2 Connecting Gravity

For gravity flow, align the maximum water level with the drum. The maximum and minimum water levels are indicated inside the filter; aim to be between them, preferably close to the maximum. The filter has 110 mm entries and exits.

? For gravity installation, sufficient water feed is crucial for proper functioning!

Insufficient water supply risks the rinse pump running dry and frequent rinse cycle activation.

A rule of thumb is that approximately 10 m³/hour can be moved per 110 mm pipe in a gravity setup, depending on pipe length and height difference. In some cases, only 3 m³/hour may be moved.

Pay attention to maximum flow per pipe:

Drainage of dirt: The dirt is sprayed into the flushing channel via the mesh nozzles. This channel can connect directly to a sewer or drainage point.

Return to pond: The pump connects to the 110 mm drain. Use a flexible coupling for a good transit to your pump, which also reduces vibrations. Do not use a pump larger than recommended. Ensure sufficient water supply and that the dry running function is engaged (indicated on the Electronics box display).

7.3 Connecting the Pump-fed System

MPF drum filters and Bio-drums can also be connected as a pump-fed system. The pump supplies water to the filter. Unused exits must be sealed. Pump-fed systems decrease maximum capacity by up to 30%.

7.3.1 Assembly of Float

For pump-fed systems, the float must be assembled upside down in the drum section (at the inlet) 1st chamber.

? Safety Precaution: Remove the 2 caps of the upper sealed holes. In case of calamity, this allows unfiltered water to flow out, preventing water from being pumped directly into the flushing channel.

If the float is in the lowest position, the system is in standby. If it's in the highest position (floating), the process starts: drum rotates, rinse pump cleans the cloth for 14 seconds (standard).

If the float remains in the highest position with the water pump on, too little water flows away. The drum rinses for 40 seconds (standard), and electronics switch to dry-running protection.

7.3.2 Connection of Return to Pond

The return pipe should first go up to determine the desired height inside the filter. Avoid levels too low (affecting bio-filter material) or too high (causing high coil frequency). Adjust during operation. Start a rinse cycle when the water level difference before and after the drum is approx. 10-15 cm. Ensure the vertical section remains open to prevent tilting and pumping the filter dry.

To pump more water than a single 110 mm pipe can handle by gravity, create additional transits or use a wider diameter pipe for the return to the pond.

? Please note: The float must be installed in reverse for pump-fed systems. Remove the upper blue caps. If water rises in front of the drum filter (indicating dirt), the rinse cycle must activate. If the reversed float stays up, the system should deactivate after 40 seconds to prevent water flowing to the sewer and emptying the pond. Ensure the float is at the correct height for deactivation before water enters the flushing channel.

7.2.5 Flushing Frequency

Ensure flushing frequency is not too high. Initially, in a new system, frequency may be high as the pond is 'cleaned'. Warm weather can increase frequency due to more food and algae.

Other causes of high flushing frequency:

Float Positions:

Diagrams and Visual Descriptions

The document contains diagrams illustrating various connections and components. These include:

7.3 Connecting the pump-fed system

NOTE: Pump-fed systems have less capacity, potentially a 30% reduction. For example, a Biodrum 100 handles 50m³/h in gravity setup but only 35m³/h pump-fed. The biological part may not be completely filled, reducing biological material addition.

7.3.1 Assembly of float

For pump-fed systems, assemble the float upside down in the drum section (inlet) 1st chamber.

? Please note: The float must be installed in reverse. Remove the upper blue caps. If water rises in front of the drum filter, it indicates dirt, and the rinse cycle must activate. If the reversed float stays up, the system should deactivate after 40 seconds to prevent water flowing to the sewer and emptying the pond. Ensure the float is at the correct height for deactivation before water enters the flushing channel.

7.3.2 Connection of return to pond

The return after the filter should first go up to determine the desired height inside the filter. It should not be too low (affecting bio-filter material) or too high (causing high coil frequency). Adjust during operation. A rinse cycle must be started when the water level difference before and after the drum is approximately 10-15 cm. Ensure the vertical section remains open to prevent tilting action, causing the drum filter to be pumped dry.

To pump more water than a single 110 mm pipe can handle by gravity, create additional transits or use a wider diameter pipe for the return to the pond.

Water level indicators:

Extra Information

Bio-drums: The water in the last (biological) chamber is at least 15 cm lower than shown in image 2, just before the drum filter rinses.

Drum filters 100 and 50: The incoming water column may not be more than 15 cm higher than the outgoing water column at the time of rinsing. If it is, too much water remains in the drum, potentially causing deformation.

Biological Material: You must fill the filter yourself with biological material. The drop plates (3X) are pre-screwed; unscrew them to place the biological filling. Screw all plates back on as they were tightened at the factory, or the warranty will be void.

Troubleshooting Pump-Fed Systems:

7.4 Placing for Gravity Trickle

Make sure the surface is level and firm; a concrete slab is preferred. The surface must remain level at all times, or the warranty will be void.

WATERLEVEL MUST BE AT THE MAX!!!

8. Maintenance and Cleaning

The filters are low maintenance. However, the following tasks are required for proper functioning:

BYPASS: You can remove the blue caps in the front chamber during calamities (e.g., engine or steering issues) to continue using the filter without pre-filtering.
