Honeywell RPLS540A/RPLS541A 7-Day Solar Programmable Wall Switch

User Guide

Applications

The RPLS540A/RPLS541A programmable wall switch is suitable for single-switch or 3-way installations with the following lighting types:

  • Incandescent
  • Halogen
  • Low-voltage halogen with transformer
  • Fluorescent

The switch is designed for loads between 40 W and 500 W.

Installation

Follow these steps for safe installation:

  1. Cut power at the circuit breaker to avoid electric shock.
  2. Remove the existing switch. For 3-way installations, identify and label the wire connected to the "common" screw.
  3. Install the new switch.
  4. Apply power at the circuit breaker.

WARNING: Disconnect power to the switch before replacing a light bulb (see Section 4).

Single-Switch Installation

Wiring Description: Connect the LINE and 3-WAY wires to the 120 VAC line wire and the LOAD wire to the load. Connect the GND wire to a ground screw inside the electrical box.

3-Way Installation (Existing)

Wiring Description: Connect the LOAD wire of the RPLS540A/RPLS541A to the "common" wire identified from the old switch. Connect the GND wire to a ground screw. Connect the LINE and 3-WAY wires to the remaining wires. At the other 3-way switch, connect the jumper wire between the "common" screw and the screw where the LINE wire of the RPLS540A/RPLS541A is connected.

3-Way Installation (New)

Wiring Description: Connect the LINE and 3-WAY wires to the 120 VAC line wire and the LOAD wire to the load. Connect the GND wire to a ground screw inside the electrical box.

Quick Start-up

Set the time and date before using the switch for the first time.

By default, the RPLS540A/RPLS541A turns lights on at sunset and off at 11:00 PM. If these settings are suitable, only time and date adjustment is needed. If the switch's sunset time differs from the actual sunset time, refer to Sections 5.3.3 and 5.3.4.

Operation

The display indicates:

  • Mode of operation (see Section 5.1)
  • Current time and day
  • Current program
  • Load on/off state

Button Functions:

  • Briefly press the main button to turn lights on or off. This is a "Temporary Override" (see Section 5.1.4).
  • Press and hold the main button for 3 seconds to enter setup menus.
  • Press the other buttons to display sunrise time or sunset time.

Display Indicators:

  • The ☀️ icon indicates the current program has been activated at sunset.
  • The ? icon indicates the current program has been activated at sunrise.
  • The LED illuminates when the load is on.

Safety Switch: Before replacing a light bulb, pull out the safety switch to disconnect power. This prevents short circuits. Push it back in after replacing the bulb.

Setup Menus

Press and hold the main button for 3 seconds to enter the setup menus.

5.1 Mode Menu

Select one of three operating modes:

5.1.1 Manual Mode

Operates like a standard switch. Briefly press the main button to turn lights on or off. The ⚙️ icon appears in Manual mode.

5.1.2 Automatic Mode

Turns lights on/off based on programmed schedules (Section 5.4). The ☀️ or ? icon and the current program number are displayed.

5.1.3 Random Mode

Turns lights on/off at random times to simulate occupancy. Similar to Automatic mode but without fixed schedules. The ? icon appears. The first "On" program occurs at sunset, lasting 1-1.5 hours. "Off" programs last 15-30 minutes, with the last "Off" between 10:30 PM and midnight.

5.1.4 Temporary Override

In Automatic or Random mode, briefly pressing the main button overrides the current state (lights turn off if on, on if off). The icon (? On/Off) flashes to indicate the temporary state. The state reverts to the program schedule when the next program event occurs or the button is pressed again.

5.2 Time Menu

Use this menu to set the time format (12/24-hour) and adjust the clock and date. The display flashes if the time is not set or after a power outage longer than 4 hours. The date is used for sunset/sunrise calculations.

5.3 Configuration Menu (Conf)

Configure the following parameters:

5.3.1 Backlight Mode (SCRN)

Sets screen brightness: Off (not lit), On HI (high intensity), On LO (low intensity - default).

5.3.2 Automatic Daylight Savings Time Changeover (DLS)

When enabled (DLS On), the switch automatically adjusts for Daylight Saving Time (second Sunday in March) and Standard Time (first Sunday in November).

5.3.3 Latitude and Longitude Coordinates (LAT and LONG)

These coordinates are crucial for accurate sunset/sunrise timing. Default settings (+45 latitude, -75 longitude) provide approximate times for North American cities. For precise local times, obtain your city's coordinates from sources like www.geonames.org or a GPS device. Negative values are used for South latitude and West longitude.

5.3.4 Correction Factor (ADJ)

If your city's time zone is based on political/economic boundaries rather than geographical coordinates, use this factor (+1 or -1 hour) to adjust for early/late switching. Leave at 0 if coordinates are accurate.

5.4 Program Menu (Prog)

Set custom schedules for lights to turn On or Off in Automatic mode.

To set a program:

  1. Select a program number (P01 On to P07 On, P01 Off to P07 Off).
  2. Set the day(s) for the program (specific day, all 7 days, or "none").
  3. Set the program start time (specific time, sunset, or sunrise). You can also set a time offset (-70 to +70 minutes) from sunset/sunrise.

Examples:

  • Example 1 (Default): Lights on at sunset, off at 11:00 PM daily.
  • Example 2: Lights on at sunset, off at sunrise daily.
  • Example 3: Lights on daily at 8:00 PM, off at 10:00 PM, except on Saturday when off at 1:00 AM.

Note on Overlapping Programs: If multiple "Off" programs are set for the same day, the earliest time takes precedence.

Reset to Default Settings

Simultaneously press and hold the main and left buttons. The switch will reset after displaying the software version and "RST".
