Tesla Toolbox Guide For Windows Machines

Set up:

First: Open a new tab (I used Chrome) and click on the 3 dots in the top right and click on settings.

Next navigate to Privacy and Security and scroll down until you find site settings.

Once here open site settings then scroll down until you find additional content settings.

Click into additional content settings then find Insecure content and click into that menu.

Now Click the add button next to Allow Insecure content and type toolbox.tesla.com exactly as shown below.

Now that toolbox is allowed you can log in using your tesla account. NOTE toolbox must be purchased on your tesla account prior to logging into toolbox.

Once logged in it should look like the image below.

Now for toolbox to connect via ethernet to your computer you will need to download the following software which can be found by clicking on the download software button and installing toolbox proxy.

Once installed it is recommended to close google chrome completely by going to the task manager and closing it. Now run the toolbox proxy application that you just installed. Once you have confirmed this is running log back into the toolbox so you are at the default home screen.

Once here type your car's VIN into the text box in the top right corner, make sure to copy this so it can be pasted in the next step.

Next you will want to navigate to the Owner authorisation request page. Select Request Owner Authorisation which will prompt you to type your Tesla account email and your car's VIN. Select Vehicle in Service at Service Center (For local Connection). Once submitted go to your email and accept the Authorization Request. Once completed properly it should look like the below images.

Now we can actually connect to the car assuming your laptop is already plugged in. Find the grayed out circle in the top right corner and click on that and select Local then connect.

Be patient, it might take some time for toolbox to connect once connected the circle should appear green. If the connection fails it is recommended to clear your browser's cookies/cache, then close your browser through the task manager. Then close the toolbox proxy. Then you can open toolbox proxy again, then toolbox. If toolbox still will not connect your IP might not be static. I will cover how to make a static IP at the bottom of this document. Side Note only complete the GTW UNLOCK sequence after connecting to your car. I found this method to provide the best chances to successfully connect.

GTW UNLOCK:

GTW unlock will be required to perform some actions with toolbox. You can perform a GTW Unlock by holding your foot on the brake and setting the blinker to the right side. Continue holding the break until the screen tells you GTW Unlock success.

Now you are ready to start using toolbox to diagnose your car. I will briefly show my findings when using toolbox below.

For my situation the CAN Explorer Tab was my friend.

Here you can select the action tab which gives a wide range of diagnostics to software resets for instance I used the pos contactor welded reset command to clear the associated error code. I recommend scrolling through to get an idea of what commands can be found. Next under dashboards the service tools tab was helpful for finding the car vitals.

Beyond Can Explorer and Service Tools I personally did not use any other tabs.

Setting up Static IP/ Ethernet Adapter

First go to control panel on your computer and Click Network and Ethernet.

Then select view network status and tasks.

Now select change adapter settings.

As long as your computer is plugged into the car you will see a wired ethernet connection right click on that and select properties. Then find Internet protocol Version 4 (IPV4) and select and click properties.

Next select use following IP address and type 192.168.90.125 for the IP and 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask. Click Ok and you are done. To confirm you set the adapters properties correctly you can click the windows key and type cmd to run the command prompt.

Once there enter the command "ipconfig /all" this will show you the list of connected ip addresses.
