What's New in Cisco IOS XR Release 7.1.1
Cisco is continuously enhancing the product with every release and this section covers a brief description of key features and enhancements. It also includes links to detailed documentation, where available.
Software
Segment Routing Performance Measurement using RFC5357 (TWAMP Light) Encoding This feature introduces support for Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol (TWAMP) Light (RFC5357) for link delay and SR policy delay measurement. TWAMP Light adds two-way or round-trip measurement capabilities. With the introduction of TWAMP Light, PM-UDP (RFC6374) protocol is deprecated. See Configure Performance Measurement. Segment Routing Protected Adjacency SID Backup Timer for IS-IS IS-IS advertises a protected adjacency SID for an adjacency when a backup path is available. Primary and backup paths are programmed into the label switching database (LSD) as rewrites. The Segment Routing Protected Adjacency SID Backup Timer provides a configurable maintenance time period in which IS-IS updates the LSD rewrite with primary and backup (if available) paths to the neighbor upon topology changes. Ping and Traceroute for Segment Routing Flexible Algorithm Flexible Algorithm validation method is based on segment identifier (SID) label and label assigner, instead of being based on IP address. The assigner is validated against the topology prefix information provided by the SR-PCE database. If the assigner is valid,

then the label given is also validated against the SR-PCE database. On the egress side, the destination label is contained in a new SR Label sub-TLV. This label is verified against a SID list provided by the SR-PCE. See Segment Routing Ping and Traceroute for Flexible Algorithm.
Segment Routing Flexible Algorithm Affinity Constraints for IS-IS This feature introduces support for "include-all" and "include-any" affinity constraints for configuring Segment Routing Flexible Algorithm for IS-IS. See the Configuring Flexible Algorithm .
Segment Routing Conditional Prefix Advertisement for IS-IS Anycast routing enables the steering of traffic toward multiple advertising nodes, providing load-balancing and redundancy. Packets addressed to an Anycast address are forwarded to the topologically nearest nodes. If an advertising node becomes unavailable or unreachable while still advertising its Anycast SID, traffic could still be routed to the node and, as a result, get dropped. The Segment Routing Conditional Prefix Advertisement for IS-IS feature allows a node to advertise its loopback address when it's connected to the domain, and to track the loopback addresses of the other nodes in the domain. If a node becomes unavailable or unreachable, it will stop advertising its loopback address, allowing for a new path to be computed. See the Conditional Prefix Advertisement .
CFM Adaptive Bandwidth Notifications Modern microwave devices support adaptive modulation schemes to prevent a complete loss of signal. Adaptive modulation schemes allow the devices to continue to operate during periods of degradation, but at a reduced bandwidth. However, to fully take advantage of this, it's necessary to convey the decrease in bandwidth to the head-end router so that appropriate actions can be taken. Otherwise, the link may become saturated and traffic dropped arbitrarily. A generic solution to this is a Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) extension to send Bandwidth Notifications Messages (BNM) to Maintenance Endpoints (MEPs) on the corresponding interface on the head-end router. To be flexible in the actions taken, the choice of solution uses Embedded Event Manager (EEM) to invoke operator written TCL scripts See CFM Adaptive Bandwidth Notifications
Highest Random Weight Mode for EVPN DF Election The Highest Random Weight (HRW) Mode for EVPN DF Election feature provides optimal load distribution of Designated Forwarder (DF) election, redundancy, and fast access. It ensures a nondisruptive service for an Ethernet Segment (ES) irrespective of the state of a peer DF. See Highest Random Weight Mode for EVPN DF Election.
IPFIX 315 Support on ASR 9000 Fourth Generation Line Cards From this release Internet Protocol Flow Information Export (IPFIX) 315 feature is also supported on ASR 9000 fourth generation line cards. IPFIX is an IETF standard export protocol (RFC 7011) for sending IP flow information. Cisco ASR 9000 Router supports IPFIX 315 format to export flow information. IPFIX 315 format facilitates sending `n' octets frame information starting from ethernet header till trasport header of the traffic flow over the network. The information of the packets flowing through a device is used for a variety of purpose including network monitoring, capacity planning, traffic management, etc. See IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX) 315.

MAP-T Support on Cisco ASR 9000 4th Generation Line Cards This release supports the Mapping of Address and Port-Translation Mode (MAP-T) CGN solution on Cisco ASR 9000 4th Generation Line Cards. See MAP-T without Service Cards.
Support for Stateful Logging for MAP-T on Cisco ASR 9000 4th Generation Line Cards Stateful logging provides more efficiency in the packet punt rate and control plane processing load. Inline MAP-T supports inline data path translations without the need for a dedicated VSM card. The inline option allows customers to save on the slot space (no VSM card), throughput (no single slot bottleneck), and provides a common solution on 32-bit and 64-bit XR platforms. Stateful logging for MAP-T is now supported on ASR 9000 4th generation line cards. See Overview of MAP-T Logging.
Recent Prefixes Events and Trace Support The Recent Prefixes Events and Trace Support feature enables you to obtain per-prefix level churning information without the use of debug commands. The show commands associated with this feature provide you a recent history of major events at the prefix level. They display the last 8 events for the last hundred prefixes that were churned across an address family. See Recent Prefixes Events and Trace Support. Commands modified are:
· show bgp l2vpn · show bgp update-group
Dynamic and Static Buffer Allocation With ever increasing forwarding throughputs and traffic densities, how do you ensure that your packet-buffering model efficiently allocates (or carves) memory during congestion in any given subset of ports? And even as it does this, also ensuring fairness across all ports and honoring the different traffic priorities? The answer is available in the Cisco ASR 9000 4th Generation QSFP28-based dense 100GE line cards that allow for either dynamic or static buffer allocation for egress queuing. This means that you can now allocate memory for priority traffic at the egress using intelligent packet buffering techniques (dynamic and static), hence ensuring lesser packet drops (or preservation of priority packets) and lower latency. See Dynamic Buffer Allocation. The command, hw-module buffer-carve-mode is introduced.
Specify Source Address or Interface for Resource Public Key Infrastructure Server The Specify Source Address or Interface for Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) Server feature allows you to specify the source IP address and interface used for the RPKI server connection. This feature enables you to have RPKI session that source from loopback interface. See BGP Prefix Origin Validation Based on RPKI.
DHCP on PWHE Interfaces The DHCP on PWHE interfaces feature enables you to configure DHCP functionality such as DHCP server, relay, or proxy on the PWHE interface.

This feature allows you to offer LAN IP gateway services such as, DHCP and DNS to your customers connected through PWHE interface. This feature removes the need for an extra layer 3 router at your branch site. Instead, use S-PE to centralize DHCP-server functionality to lower the cost and simplify on-premise solution. This feature minimizes the equipment needed on-premise at the end-customer premises. Centralizing DHCP on the S-PE allows you to offer faster time-to-market as you do not have to ship layer 3 devices to your customer site. This feature significantly simplifies the connectivity of enterprise branch sites requiring LAN DHCP services from their service provider. See DHCP on PWHE Interfaces.
IP Service Level Agreement Object Identifier (OID) Enhancements From Release 7.1.1 onwards, IP Service Level Agreements supports the latest version of CISCO-RTTMON-MIB and hence the users can reap the benefits of the revised Management Information Base (MIB), such as the MIB object rttMonCtrlAdminTag, which supports 16 characters, is superceded by rttmonCtrlAdminLongTag which supports up to 128 characters. MACsec ISSU The Cisco IOS XR Software supports in-service software upgrade (ISSU) for Media Access Control Security (MACsec) on the 64-bit IOS XR operating system. This feature allows you to upgrade the network systems without interrupting the secure data connectivity provided by the MACsec session. Such upgrades are feasible if the system and each of its peers support in-service software upgrade. See MACsec ISSU. Commands introduced are:

Notification Alerts for TLS Certificate Expiry Support for a notification mechanism using SNMP trap and syslog messages when a TLS certificate is approaching its expiry. The notifications are sent at the following intervals:
· First notification--This notification is sent 60 days before the expiry of the certificate. · Repeated notifications--After the first notification, subsequent notifications are sent every week until a week before the expiry
of the certificate. In the last week, notifications are sent every day until the certificate expiry date.

Congestion Management for Telemetry Data A congestion management system for telemetry data allows each destination a maximum of 4000 outstanding messages. The events are throttled when the outstanding messages exceed 3000; throttling of cadence messages happen when outstanding messages exceed 250. Events have higher priority than cadence messages. See Congestion Management for Telemetry Data.
Revised OpenConfig Data Models for Network Programmability The OpenConfig (OC) data models are defined by the OC community to create configuration and retreive operational state data of the network. The following data models are revised to provide additional capabilities:

· The OC Integrated Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System data model, oc-isis, is enahnced to provide support for additional paths in the data model.
· The oc-policy data model contains general data definitions for use in routing policy. It can be imported by modules that contain protocol-specific policy conditions and actions.
· Enhancement of gNMI specification to include updates from version 0.4.0 to version 0.6.0. Support is extended for the following gNMI features: · gNMI support for multiple client roles and primary arbitration
· Path Target
· gNMI service registration with the gRPC reflection service to allow clients to determine that gNMI is available on the target

ITU-T Time-of-day format
ITU-T time-of-day message format is now supported while configuring clock parameters.This feature enables GPS input and GPS output time-of-day messages to be sent in the ITU-T format.

Flexible Consumption Model The Flexible Consumption Model of licensing is now supported on Third Generation Line Cards. This model of licensing is available at low initial investment, provides easy scalability, and allows customers to increase consumption of licenses as they expand. Flexible Consumption model licenses are checked for usage on a daily basis. The daily license usage is reported to the Smart Licensing Manager at Cisco.com. See Flexible Consumption Model.
Slice Down Dynamic Support The Slice Down Dynamic Support feature is supported on the 4th generation line cards. This feature enables a fault handling mechanism which isolates a faulty Network Processing Unit (NPU), preventing the reload of the entire Line Card. See Managing Router Hardware.
gNOI Enhancements gRPC Network Operations Interface (gNOI) defines a set of gRPC-based microservices for executing operational commands on network devices. gNOI supports for the following remote procedure calls (RPCs):

OpenConfig Data Models for Network Programmability The OpenConfig (OC) data models are defined by the OC community to create configuration and retreive operational state data of the network. This release introduces support for the following OC models:
· The OC Bidirectional Forwarding Detection data model, oc-bfd, defines the BFD protocol in multi-vendor environment to configure and get operational state data for the BFD protocol.
· The oc-platform data model supports streaming operational and configuration state data that are related to the underlying characteristics of the device.

· EVAL Period is supported on Cisco IOS XR 64 bit OS. · Repetitive Smart Licensing evaluation expired warning messages are displayed on the console every hour, but there is no
functionality impact observed on the device. To stop these repetitive messages, you should register the device again with a new registration token. · Cisco IOS XR Release 5.3.0 and later does not support combination of Cisco ASR 9000 High Density 100GE Ethernet Line Card and Cisco ASR 9000 Ethernet Line Card in a single chassis. Upgrading Cisco IOS XR Software
Cisco IOS XR Software is installed and activated from modular packages, allowing specific features or software patches to be installed, upgraded, or downgraded without affecting unrelated processes. Software packages can be upgraded or downgraded on all supported card types, or on a single card (node). Software packages are installed from Route Processor Module (RPM) files that contain one or more software components. The upgrade document is available along with the software images.

Before starting the software upgrade, use the show install health command in the admin mode. This command validates if the statuses of all relevant parameters of the system are ready for the software upgrade without interrupting the system.

Note If you use a TAR package to upgrade from a Cisco IOS XR release prior to 7.x, the output of the show install health command in admin mode displays the following error messages:

You can ignore these messages and proceed with the installation operation.
Cisco Software Manager (CSM) application provides an intuitive user interface to manage Cisco IOS XR installations, with pre-installation and post-installation checks and reports. CSM helps manage the process of software maintenance upgrades (SMUs) and service packs (SPs) on devices that run the Cisco IOS XR Software. For information on using CSM, see Cisco Software Manager User Guide.
Production Software Maintenance Updates (SMUs)
A production SMU is a SMU that is formally requested, developed, tested, and released. Production SMUs are intended for use in a live network environment and are formally supported by the Cisco TAC and the relevant development teams. Software bugs identified through software recommendations or Bug Search Tools are not a basis for production SMU requests. For information on production SMU types, refer the Production SMU Types section of the IOS XR Software Maintenance Updates (SMUs) guide.
