1.0 General Warnings and Information

WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:

  • Failure to follow these instructions and Booster Seat labels can result in injury or death to a child from striking the vehicle's interior during a sudden stop or crash.
  • It is important to read these instructions and the vehicle owner's manual, even if the Booster Seat seems easy to use.
  • Follow instructions in this manual and your vehicle owner's manual carefully. If there is a conflict, the vehicle owner's manual takes precedence.
  • Improper use or adjustment of the automobile seat belt can result in serious injury or death.
  • Only allow others (babysitters, friends, grandparents, etc.) to use this Booster Seat if they read and understand the instructions and labels.
  • Use only accessories manufactured by Baby Trend, as others may affect child safety.
  • Do not modify or attach toys, padding, or other items to this Booster Seat, as untested modifications could result in injury.
  • Secure this Booster Seat with the vehicle seat belt at all times, even when unoccupied, as it can injure someone in a crash.
  • Direct sunlight can make Booster Seat surfaces hot enough to burn your child; use caution on hot, sunny days.
  • Never leave a child unattended in the Booster Seat.
  • Do not use this Booster Seat if it has been in a crash, as hidden damage may require replacement. Your insurance company may assist with replacement.
  • Do not use this Booster Seat if it is damaged or has missing parts.
  • Discontinue use after 9 years from the date of manufacture.
  • Always secure this child restraint with a vehicle lap and shoulder belt.

2.0 Use Recommendations

Children should use a child restraint with a built-in harness until they exceed the manufacturer's specified weight or height limits.

2.1 Weight and Height Requirements:

This restraint is for children who:

  • Are 3 years or older.
  • Weigh between 30 and 100 lbs (13.6 and 45 kg).
  • Are between 38 and 57 inches (96 and 145 cm) in height.

2.2 Booster Seat Use:

Child MUST meet all of these requirements to use this Booster Seat.

WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:

  • Do not use this Booster Seat when the top of the child's ears are above the top edge of the seat back, as this can lead to severe head or neck injuries without proper head support.
  • Do not use the Booster Seat when the child's shoulders are above the shoulder belt guide with the headrest in its highest position. (See Fig. 5 for illustration of correct shoulder belt guide positioning).

3.0 Booster Seat Parts

The booster seat includes components such as an adjustable headrest, adjustable vehicle shoulder belt guide, armrests, lap/shoulder belt guides, cup holder, seat bottom, carry handle, and an instruction manual pocket.

4.0 Selecting a Vehicle Seating Location

4.1 Proper Use:

WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:

  • Use only the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt system when restraining a child.
  • Never use the Booster Seat with only a vehicle lap belt.
  • Do not use with vehicle seat belts mounted to the front door.
  • Do not use if it cannot be properly installed; some restraints do not fit all seating positions.
  • Never use in a vehicle seating position equipped with an active air bag unless recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Refer to page 8 for side airbag information.
  • Do not use in the rear seat of a compact pickup truck, as severe head injury or death can occur.

WARNING: Never use this Car Seat in a seating location with an Active Frontal Air Bag. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for information about Active Air Bags and child safety seat installation.

4.2 Proper Installation:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that children under 13 are safer in rear seating positions. Always refer to your vehicle owner's manual for specific installation instructions.

  • Use the Booster Seat in a rear seat location whenever possible.
  • Avoid front seat locations unless recommended by the vehicle owner's manual.
  • For vehicles with air bags, consult the owner's manual for installation information. If a front seat with an air bag must be used, follow manufacturer instructions and move the vehicle seat back as far as possible.

Baby Trend Policy Statement on Side Airbags: The PROtect Car Seat Series Yumi Folding Booster may be used in rear seating positions equipped with roof-mounted, "curtain" type side impact airbags. For other types of side airbags, consult your vehicle's owner's manual or the automobile manufacturer.

4.3 Vehicle Seats to Avoid:

Do not use with vehicle seats that face sideways, face rearward, or in the rear seats of small extended cab pickup trucks.

4.4 Vehicle Seat Belt Systems:

Use only the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt system. Not all vehicle seat belts are compatible with child restraints. Refer to the manual for details on various systems.

4.5 Vehicle Seat Belt Systems to Avoid:

Do not use with lap belts only, passive restraints with motorized shoulder belts, or passive restraints with lap or shoulder belts mounted on the front door.

WARNING: Secure this Booster Seat with the vehicle seat belt at all times. An unsecured child restraint can injure someone in a crash.

5.0 Installation and Use

5.1 Proper Use:

WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:

  • Use only a vehicle lap and shoulder belt system. Never use just a lap belt (see Fig. 13a). Always use a combination lap and shoulder belt (see Fig. 13b).
  • Snugly adjust the vehicle lap and shoulder belt around your child according to the vehicle owner's manual.
  • Never place the Booster Seat in a seating position with an active air bag unless recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Do not allow the child to slide down in the Booster Seat, as this can position the lap belt across the abdomen and the shoulder belt across the neck or face.

5.2 Yumi™ Fit Guide:

Read all sections of this booklet before use. Ensure the following:

  1. Shoulder Belt Centered on Shoulder
  2. Belt Guide Shoulder Height (at or just above child's shoulders)
  3. Lap Belt in Both Lap Belt Guides
  4. Shoulder Belt Nearest Auto Buckle in Lap Belt Guide

(See diagrams for belt positioning guidance).

5.3 Installing Booster Seat:

  1. Open the Booster Seat from its folded position by grasping the seat back and bottom and unfolding until upright (see Fig. 15a, 15b).
  2. Place the Booster Seat in the selected vehicle seating location, ensuring it has a lap and shoulder belt.
  3. If the vehicle seat back is adjustable, adjust it to the upright position.
  4. Adjust the vehicle headrest to its lowest position.

5.4 Securing Child in Booster Seat:

  1. Secure the child upright with their back contacting the seat back, not slouching or sliding down (see Fig. 16a).
  2. Adjust the headrest so the top of the shoulder belt guides are at or just above the child's shoulders (see Fig. 16b, 16c). Ensure the headrest handles are locked.
  3. Adjust the shoulder belt so its inside edge is centered on the shoulder (see Fig. 16b). Use the release button to adjust the belt guide (see Fig. 16d). The headrest can be readjusted to ensure the belt is centered.
  4. Place the lap and shoulder belt across the child and buckle the seat belt (see Fig. 17a).
  5. Position the lap belt under both lap belt guides (see Fig. 17b).
  6. Place the shoulder belt over the child's chest, into the shoulder belt guide, and into the lap belt guide closest to the auto buckle (see Fig. 17c).

NOTE: The armrest may be raised to make getting the child into the Booster easier. Be sure to lower the armrest once the child is seated.

Snugly adjust the lap and shoulder belt according to the vehicle owner's manual. The preferred location for the shoulder belt is in the lap belt guide, but it can be placed out of the guide but under the armrest for proper positioning.

5.5 Booster Seat Back Angle:

The Yumi seat has a range of motion to match your vehicle's seat back angle (see Fig. 18a).

5.6 Headrest Adjustment:

Push headrest release handles and move the headrest up or down to the desired position (see Fig. 18b).

5.7 Cup Holder:

WARNING: AVOID INJURY! Do not place pencils or other sharp or pointed objects in the cup holder (see Fig. 18c).

5.8 Shoulder Belt Adjustment:

Press the release button to move the shoulder belt guide to position 1, 2, or 3 (see Fig. 19a).

5.9 Shoulder Belt Insertion:

Press down on the belt guide and insert the shoulder belt, then release the guide (see Fig. 19b).

5.10 Booster Seat Storage:

To Fold Booster Seat: Fold the seatback forward towards the seat bottom, then move the seat back down until it is in the folded position (see Fig. 19c). Store in a cool, dry location.

To Carry Booster Seat: Place fingers in the carry handle opening and grasp the top of the seat back.
