Charge Mate Pro
Current Limited Electronic Charge Relay
Introduction
The Mastervolt Charge Mate Pro is a current-limited electronic charge relay designed for distributing charge current between two battery banks. It automatically connects the battery banks when the voltage rises above a pre-set value for at least 5 seconds. When the voltage drops, the battery banks are isolated again. An optional remote control switch allows the Charge Mate Pro to function as a switch for emergency engine starts, overriding the automatic function and disabling current limiting.
Important Safety Notes:
- Only use battery banks with the same type of charge characteristics.
- The Charge Mate Pro is intended for 12 Vdc or 24 Vdc installations with a common negative connection.

Wiring Diagram Description
The device connects to two battery banks (Battery 1 and Battery 2). Terminals are labeled A+ and B+ for battery connections, and a ground terminal is provided. The diagram shows the flow of current direction. It also illustrates an optional LED indicator and a remote switch with functions including ON, PULSE, OFF, and AUTOMATIC modes.
Safety Regulations and Measures
- Install the Charge Mate Pro according to the instructions in this manual.
- Use the product in accordance with its specifications.
- Ensure all connections and safety features comply with local regulations.
- Use cables of appropriate gauge and keep cable runs as short as possible.
- Use reliable terminals and tighten bolts securely, but do not over-torque.
- Regularly inspect the electrical installation (at least annually) and correct any defects such as loose connections or burnt wiring immediately.
Installation
Before installation, ensure the power source output is switched off and no consumers are connected to the batteries to prevent hazardous situations.
Mount the Charge Mate Pro as close as possible to both the power source and the batteries. It requires a well-ventilated environment due to potential heat generation from high currents. Mounting on a flat metal surface with vertical fins is recommended.
Follow the installation diagram for correct connections. Use the packaging template to determine exact mounting locations and drill holes.
Install the Charge Mate Pro in the positive lead between the battery banks. Connect the negative of the battery banks to the Charge Mate Pro.
An optional remote status light can be installed on the Status output and A+ terminals.
⚠️ Do not install the Charge Mate Pro directly above batteries due to potential corrosive sulfur fumes.
Remote Switch (Optional)
A single-pole ON-OFF-ON switch can be installed for remote operation. Refer to the installation drawing on page 2 for details.
Remote Switch Functions:
Mode | Function |
---|---|
ON | Switches input to 12/24 V. Battery banks connect in parallel and bi-directionally, limited to 150A. |
PULSE | Switches input to 12/24 V for a short duration. Emergency start (battery banks connect for 30 seconds without current limit). |
OFF | Switches input to Ground. The Charge Mate Pro is switched off. |
AUTOMATIC | Leaves the switch input floating (or no switch connected). Default automatic mode with 40A / 90A fixed current limit. |
LED Indicators and Warnings
The green status LED indicates an electrical connection between A+ and B+. The red warning LED lights up when there is no electrical connection between A+ and B+.
Warning LED Indicators:
Indicator | Condition | Description |
---|---|---|
1 blink | Overvoltage | Voltage on A+ and/or B+ above 15.5/31 V for more than 1 sec. Warning clears when voltage drops below 15/30 V for more than 10 sec. |
2 blinks | High Voltage Differential | Voltage difference between A+ and B+ greater than 8/16 V for more than 2.5 sec. Warning clears when differential drops below 8/16 V for more than 2.5 sec. |
3 blinks | Temperature Too High | Warning for temperatures above 75 °C (167 °F). Clears when temperature drops below 65 °C (149 °F). |
4 blinks | Reverse Current | Reverse current detected from B+ to A+ for more than 2 sec. Clears after 20 sec. |
