Introduction
Congratulations and special thanks from DigiTech for choosing the Scott Ian Black-13 Artist Series Pedal. DigiTech's philosophy for developing products begins with the desire to provide every guitarist with the best-sounding, most creative tools possible. To this end, their revolutionary technology, Production Modeling™, was designed to help reproduce the studio and live sounds and effects of an artist as heard on their recordings. This includes modeling the speaker cabinets, microphones with their placements, pre/post effects, and the recording engineer's magic all in one pedal.
The Black-13 Artist Series Pedal is the product of a collaboration with Scott Ian, the world-famous guitarist for the bands Anthrax and S.O.D. Scott's aggressive playing style helped create and define old-school metal, thrash, nu-metal, and even rap music genres. The Black-13 pedal models seven of Scott's signature tones from songs like "Madhouse" with Scott's devastating rhythm crunch from his early years with Anthrax, "Finale" with its dramatic delay and eerie pitch shift effect, to "What Doesn't Die" which features Scott's ultra-heavy, grinding tone. Mosh it up with the Black-13!

Pedal Overview and Controls
The DigiTech Black-13 pedal features a straightforward front panel layout for easy access to its powerful features.
Visual Description: The front panel of the pedal displays five knobs labeled LEVEL, CONTROL 1, CONTROL 2, and MODEL, along with an On/Off footswitch. Input and output jacks are located on the sides.
Controls:
- 1. LEVEL: Controls the output level of the effect. Turn clockwise to increase, counter-clockwise to decrease.
- 2. CONTROL 1: Controls Low Frequency Boost/Cut in models 1-6, and the amount of pitch shift in model 7.
- 3. AC Adapter Jack: Connect only the included DigiTech PS200R (9V DC) power supply to this jack.
- 4. CONTROL 2: Controls High Frequency Boost/Cut in models 1-6, and the delay length in model 7.
- 5. MODEL: Selects one of the seven different signature Scott Ian tones.
Jacks and Indicators:
- INPUT (6): Connect your instrument to this jack. Connecting a guitar cable to this jack supplies battery power even if the Indicator LED is not lit. To prolong battery life, disconnect all cables when not in use.
- OUT 1 (AMP) (9): Connect this output jack to your guitar amplifier.
- OUT 2 (MIXER) (11): This output is designed for use with a full-range audio system, such as a mixer or recording device, for optimal performance.
- Indicator LED (10): Indicates when the effect is turned on. If the LED becomes dim or does not light when using battery power, the battery needs to be replaced.
- Pedal Release Pins (7): These spring-loaded hinges hold the pedal in place. Push these pins to release the pedal from the chassis, exposing the battery compartment and serial number.
- Pedal (8): Press the pedal to turn the effect on and off.
Model Descriptions
Note: Set the CONTROL 1 and CONTROL 2 knobs to the 12 o'clock position to most accurately recreate each tone as it sounds in the original recordings.

Detailed Model Explanations:
Model 1: "I Am the Law"
This model captures the clearer, more sizzling distortion tone Scott used for "I Am the Law". Use the CONTROL 1 knob to boost or cut the low frequencies. Use the CONTROL 2 knob to boost or cut the high frequencies.
Model 2: "Madhouse"
This model generates the more refined tone Scott used in "Madhouse". Use the CONTROL 1 knob to boost or cut the low frequencies. Use the CONTROL 2 knob to boost or cut the high frequencies.
Model 3: "March of the S.O.D."
This is the classic "grind" distortion tone Scott pioneered and utilized in "March of the S.O.D.". Use the CONTROL 1 knob to boost or cut the low frequencies. Use the CONTROL 2 knob to boost or cut the high frequencies.
Model 4: "Protest and Survive"
This model is based on the raw, more diffuse distortion tone Scott used for the intro to "Protest and Survive". Use the CONTROL 1 knob to boost or cut the low frequencies. Use the CONTROL 2 knob to boost or cut the high frequencies.
Model 5: "Room For One More"
Scott achieved this tone by combining three amps (a Marshall JCM 800, a Matchless, and a Marshall Jubilee) with a T.C. Electronics Booster/Distortion processor. Use the CONTROL 1 knob to boost or cut the low frequencies. Use the CONTROL 2 knob to boost or cut the high frequencies.
Model 6: "What Doesn't Die"
This effect gives your guitar the more modern distortion tone Scott got with a Randall amp and a BBE Sonic Maximizer processor. Use the CONTROL 1 knob to boost or cut the low frequencies. Use the CONTROL 2 knob to boost or cut the high frequencies.
Model 7: "Finale"
This model is based on the pitch-shifted delay effect Scott used during the opening muted bar chords of the song "Finale". The CONTROL 1 knob changes the amount of pitch-shifting in the delayed repeats. Setting CONTROL 1 fully clockwise shifts each repeat up 12 semitones, while fully counter-clockwise shifts each repeat down 12 semitones. Setting CONTROL 1 to the 12 o'clock position recreates the same pitch shift used in the original recording; for no pitch shift, set CONTROL 1 to approximately 2 o'clock. The CONTROL 2 knob adjusts the delay time of the pitch-shifted repeat; turn it clockwise for longer delays, or counter-clockwise for shorter delays.
Setup Directions
Follow these setup directions before use:
- Turn the volume down on the amplifier/mixer you are connecting to.
- Connect the pedal output to the amplifier and/or mixer input. (Please refer to the Connections Diagrams.)
- Connect the guitar to the pedal input. (Please refer to the Connections Diagrams.)
- Connect the power supply to the pedal. (Please refer to the Connections Diagrams.)
- Set the pedal's LEVEL control to the minimum position.
- Turn up your amplifier/mixer level to your desired listening level.
- Turn on the pedal by pressing the pedal switch and gradually turn up the pedal's LEVEL control to the desired listening level.
Connections
The Black-13 pedal features a single INPUT and a pair of outputs: OUT 1 (AMP) and OUT 2 (MIXER). The two outputs give you the option of running into a guitar amplifier, running directly to a mixing console, or both at the same time. The OUT 2 (MIXER) output has been specially designed to faithfully reproduce Scott's studio guitar amplifier tones without having to use an amp.
Visual Description (Output Diagram): The rear panel shows one INPUT jack and two OUTPUT jacks labeled OUT 1 (AMP) and OUT 2 (MIXER).
Visual Description (Connections Diagram - Amp): This diagram illustrates connecting a guitar to the INPUT jack of the Black-13 pedal, connecting OUT 1 (AMP) to an AMPLIFIER, and connecting the PS200R power supply to the pedal's AC adapter jack.

- Using the tip of a 1/4" guitar cable, push one of the release pins in on either side of the pedal, and remove the pedal from the pedal chassis.
- Remove the battery from the battery compartment and disconnect the battery cable.
- Connect a new battery to the battery cable and put it back in the battery compartment. Make sure the battery cable does not interfere with the spring or pedal switch arm.
- Place one hole of the pedal over its corresponding pin.
- Push the opposite pin in and lower the other side of the pedal into place over the depressed pin. Release the pin. When the pedal is properly fastened, both release pins are flush with the outer side of the pedal.
