General information

1-1 . INTRODUCTION
1-2 . Th is sectio n of the ma nu al gives desc ription of the i nstru ment, informatio n on i nstru ment iden tificatio n and available options, and complete specifications.
1-3 . INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION
1-4 . The HP M odel 5383 (see F igur e 1-1) is direct-co unti ng frequency counte r that has
ran ge of 10 H z to 512 MH z . Nine display d igits pr ovide resolutio n of one Hz per second for inp u ts up to 512 MHz . F ro nt panel controls allow selection of gate times, in put im pedances, a nd attenu ators. rea r pan el conn ector and associate d selecto r switch allow either an extern al time base oscillato r inp ut, or monito ring of the internal tim e base oscillator. Wh en the optional tem peratu re compen sated crystal oscillator (TCXO) is installed , the rear panel connector serves only as time base mon ito r. In addition, rear panel power selecto r switch permits the 5383 Coun ter to ope rate wit h li n e voltages ranging from 90V to 252V (li ne frequency range: 48 440
 z) .
1-5 . ACCESSOR I ES A N D O PTIO N S
1-6. Two accesso ries a re available for mounti ng th e 5383 counter o nto the user's rack . The 10851 kit permits the mounting of a single counter, wh ile th e 10852 kit is used for mounting two counters in sid e-by-side config ur ation . Refer to Section for detailed rack mounting kit information .
1-7 . Op tion 001 provides more acc urate and stable time base oscillator. Th is Temperatu re Com pensated C rystal Oscillato r (TCXO) installatio n mod ifies th e rear pa nel so that the connector

the various conn ectors and nd icators. The followi ng paragraphs also provi de operating guidelines and b rief ope rato r maintenance proce dures for the frequency counter.
3-5. MEASUREMEN T TECHNIQUES

3-6 . Noise ridi ng on t he input sig nal can ca use erro neous or unstable frequency measurements. U sing the i nter nal 10 atten uato r, o r extern al attenuato rs min imizes this problem . Proper selection of the inpu t impedance also allows for stable and acc urate frequency measur ements. Wh en there is difference between the signal sour ce i mpedance and the coun ter input impedance, ringing may appear on the signal . Th is r ingin g could interfere with, and d egrade the capability of the counter. Knowledge of t he signal source circu it characteristics
and selection of com patible 5383 i nput impeda nces and attenuation permits proper mea-
su rements. Table 3-1 (page 3-2) provides some suggeste d measureme nt tec hniques to help the u ser obtai n maxim u m use of the freque ncy counter.
3-7. Ratio Measureme nts (Standard Counter Only)

3-8 . The sta nd ard counter will measur e the ratio between the frequ encies of two signals if one of the signals is applied to the rear-pa nel OSCI LL ATO R- IN conn ector and the other sig nal is
i applied to the front-panel I NPUT conn ector. (The Option 001 counter does not have an extern al
oscillator nput connector .) Be su reto refe r to Tab le 1-2for sig nal level and frequency limits . The displayed val ue is in units wh ich represent the ratio of one frequency to the other as shown by the followi ng fo rmu la :

J 107 if GAT E TIME is 10s

3-9. N ote that in the above formula the term "" ch anges by factor of 107 when 10s GAT E TIME is set. The GAT E TIME is the same when 1s and 1s selectio ns are made. N ote, also, that actual measureme nt time increases as th e frequency ap plied to the OSCI LLATOR- IN connector decreases . 1f the frequency applied to the OSCILL ATO R- IN co nnector is 1 MHz, fo r example, and GAT E TIME is set to 1s, actual measur eme nt time will be 10 seconds.

THEORY OF OPERATION

Model 5383
Theory of Ope ration

4-1 . INTRODUCTION
42. The theo ry of ope ration is written p rimarily at functional block level. Some detailed circuit theory is p rovi ded as an aid to troubleshooting when circuit com plexity requ ires it. In addition , brief ci rcuit explanations are given for two unique integrated circuit packages : the
Variable Time Base Counter and the H ex M ultiplexed Counters.
4-3 . FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
4-4 . The 5383 is d irect frequency co un ti ng i nstru ment wh ich computes input frequency "f" by cou nti ng the nu mber of cycles " " t hat occur s during an intern ally generated time base i nterval "t" . Th is frequency measur ement function is described sim ply by the followi ng equation :
 =fxt
 = num ber of cycles
f = frequ ency of input sig nal
t = intern ally generated time base interval O n ce calculated , " " d ata must be sam pled and corr ectly transferred to the 9-d igit cou nter display.
4-5. I NPUT CIRCUIT
46. ( Refe r to Figur e 4-1 and to schematic.) Sig nal "f" is applied to the input circu its consisting of A2S2, A1Q15, and A1Q14. Input switch S2 routes the sig nal to eit h er the 1 1, 10 path, or the th e 50 path . Q14 and Q15 b iases th ese signal pat hs, allowi ng the Balanced I nput Amplifier to accept either the 50 or t he 1 sig nal ( refe r to the schematic for detailed biasing i nformation and corresponding signal path selectio n ) . A2S2 ca n also select 1 10 attenuato r consisti ng of 1 :10 voltage divider network .
The 50 signal path consists of:
. 0.1 amp fuse AlF1 (3.5V rms maximum input). b. Clampi ng and limiti ng diodes (A1CR12 and CR13; and A1CR8 thru CR11) which limit the
input to 1 volt pea k-to-pea k. The 1 1, 10 path consists of:
. FET's A1Q17, Q18, and Emitter followe r A1Q16. b. switchable low p ass filter consisti ng of A1 R55 and C44 . 'Board -mounted switch A1S2
("FI LTER") switches this filter in or out.

4-7. BALANCED INPU T AMPL IFIER

4-8 . ( R efe r to Fig ure 4-1 an d sc h ematic .) T h is ci rcu it pr ovi d es a pproximately 24 dB m of sig n al
i gai n for the Sch mitt trigger i nput. In addition , the balanced input amplifier uses feedback
circu it to ensure that the do level of the Schmitt Trigger nput remains constant in spite of input circu it or tem perature variations. Dc offsets, that resu lt from these variations are sensed by
feedb ack comparato , A1 U5 and com pared wit h the level set by balance potentiometer 11132 . differen ce results i n compensating voltage drive to differential terminal of A1 U8. This com pen sati n g voltage ultimately drives the output of 1IJ6 i n direction wh ich nulls the original offset voltage . Fo r example; if, due to temperature or ci rcu it va riations, the inpu t do level to the
Sch mitt Trigger becomes more positive ; A1 U5 senses the change at its inpu t. The com parato r responds by provi ding negative voltage wh ich is proportional to this positive offset . This negative voltage drives d ifferential terminal of A1U 8; forci ng its output in more positive di rection . This positive inc rease causes the inverting outpu t ofA1 U6togomore negative; nulli ng the o rigi nal positive offset . This consistent d o level ensures that si ne wave i n put to the Sch mitt
trigger (A1 U 2) produ ces symmetrical square wave output.

4-9. AND MAIN GATE CIRCUITS

from the .. (Time Base) circuits. The width of M GE, or "t", is dete rmi ned by the setti ng of the

front panel GAT E TIME switch . The count down ci rcuits respond to the switch i npu t by counti ng down the 10 MHz to provi de 0 .1, 1 .0, or 10 second MG ("t") width (refe r to Fig-

ure 4-5) . It is du ring th is "t" in terval, that the ena bled Main Gate passes sig nal "f" throug h to the

Decade Counters . These counters count the numbe r of cycles (during i nterval "t") and provi de

the resu lti ng "" data in the form of n ine (4 bit) BCD characters . This accu mulated data is

transfe rred to 9 sto rage latches when TR (tra nsfer) pulse is received from the Sca n Timing

circuits .

4-11 . SCA N TIMING CIRCUITS
4-12. (Refe r to Figure 4-1 or schematic.) A1 U 24, the Sca n Oscillator, is nomi nal 2 kHz timi ng sig n al generato r. The 2 kHz output drives the Scan Timing Circu its which provi de upd ate, sam ple, and display timing sig nals to the counter sto rage latches and the d isplay circu its. F igure
4-2 sh ows th e wavefo r ms associated with th e Sca n Timi n g ci rcu its .

4-13 . The upd ate sig nals are held off until the measuri ng time i nterval, "t", ends. At this time
M G goes h igh enabli n g generation of the followi ng signals: RSTB (Reset Time Base), TR (Transfer
Itn" d ata) and RSC (Reset Counters) . These sig nals are synchronous with the 2 kHz Sca n Oscillato r. RSTB occurs first and rem ains active during the entire up date sequence. Typically this
sequence lasts approximately 0.4 milliseco nds. During this brief time (i .e., brief i n proportion to the 0 .1, 1 .0, or 10 second MG i nterval):
RSTB disables the count down circuits ( holding M G h igh) .
The TR pulse is generated, tra nsferri ng all nine "" data BCD characters to the storage latch es . T h e storage latc hes a re isolate d from t he Deca d e co un ters at all times, exce p t dur i n g TR pu lse time .
The RSC pu lse is gen erated (after t he TR pulse terminates) to reset all counters to zero. 4-14. After RSC pulse time, the RSTB sig nal changes state, releasing the. . countdown ci rcu its so they can initiate another frequency measureme nt cycle. Figure 4-3 (on p age 4-6) provi des wavefo ms and d etailed circuit description of the d isplay upd ate sequence.

NOTES 1 . M GE is an EECL version of the TTL MG sig nal.
2. Dis play sca n timing and the timing of the MG (or MGE)
sig nal are asy nchronous . T herefo re, the positive transi-
tion of the MG (or MG E) signal (i.e., trailing edge)
occ urs dur i n g any ra nd om time . 3. MG (or MG E) width ("t") depends on the setti ng of the
GAT E TIME switch .
M GE is low during time "t", allowing the frequency counters to count the i npu t signal
f r equ e n cy . T h e sto r age latch es a re isolated from t h e co un te rs at t h is time . 2 Afte r th e MG signal termi n ates, t h e RSTB latc h is set at t h e b egi nn ing of sca n time S9.
This initiates the upd ate sequence. RSTB sig nal holds M GE off (i .e., h igh) until the
completion of the update sequence (ap proximately 0 .5 milisecon ds later).
T During sca n time 99, TR and R pu lses are generate d . These signals connect the counter
outputs to th e sto rarge latches; resulti ng i n the transfer of nine BCD characters to the latches. When the TR and TR p u lses end, the latches are again isolate d from the frequency counters. Du r ing scan time S8 RSC an d RSC pu lses reset th e f re qu e n cy co un ters to ze r o . Dur ing scan time S7, t h e RSTB latc h is clea re d , e nd i n g t h e update sequ e n ce, a nd releas-
i ng M GE (i .e ., allowing it to go low) to allow another frequency count.

Duri n g scan time 57, Ri p p le Bla nk i n g (RB) Latc h A1 U 23 is p reset . Pi n 5 goes h ig h ;

drivi ng the output of enabled NAN D GAT E A1 U20 low . The low output of U 20 forces

the Ripple Blan king I npu t (RB I) Gate outp ut hig h . The d isplay digits are not evaluate d

and no bla nk ing occurs at th is time .

,

Th e low S5 signal forces NAND GAT E A1 U20 hig h . This h igh drives enabled RBI gate U 24 low, allowi ng the d isplay d igits to be eval uated . Zero is sensed , causing the most
sig nificant digit to b e bla nked during S5 and the Ripple B lanking Output (RBO) to
go low .

Low RBO clears the RB latch . The resu lti ng low output keeps NAN D GAT E U20-8 h igh ; wh ich in turn keeps the RBI signal active (low) . Since there is no i npu t signal to the
counter, each digit eval uate d is zero, causing RBO to remain low .

During scan time S7, the RB latch is again p reset, driving the output of NAND GATE U20 low. As resu lt, the RB I gate ou tput is forced h igh; d efeati ng the RBI signal and allowi n g the unit's H z zero digit, the decimal point, and the 0.1 Hz zero d igit to be display (i .e., 0. 0 ).

HEX MULTIPLEXED COUNTER A1U18

The Hex multi plexed counter integrated circuit package consists of six BCD ripple counters, six co r respo nd i n g sto r age latch es a nd mu lti p lex selecto r ci rcu it . It f u nctions i n th e following manner:

. The clock pulse (Cp) inpu t is counted by the six BCD counters: Counter "5" through Counter "0" .

b. The six (4-bit) BCD characters that result from the counting operation are trans-
ferred to the storage latches when the TR (transfer) pulse is applied. Otherwise i .e., when no -FR pulse is applied), the cou nter outputs are isolated from th e sto rage latches.

. After the transfer operation, reset counters ( RSC) pulse clears all the BCD counters to zero.

d . The BCD characters in the sto rage latches a re sequentially addressed and trans-

ferred , plexing

output of Co unter/Storage Latc h A1 U 15.

e. The H ex Mu lti plexed Counter generates h igh O F (overflow) signal w hen all six BCD counters reach termi n al n i ne count. This o utput is inverted by Q19 to pro-

1 . Lights the ove rflow light on the left-most front panel d isplay digit .

2. Disables the leading zero b lanking circuits.
