Parts of the Pitchblack XS
The Pitchblack XS includes the following components:
- TUNER ON/OFF switch: Engages or disengages the tuning function.
- DC 9V IN jack: For connecting a DC 9V AC adapter.
- AC adapter (9V, [center-positive], 600 mA or greater, sold separately): Power supply connection.
- Effect pedal, guitar amp, or mixer etc.: External devices that can be connected.
- Tuning guide LEDs: Visual indicators for tuning status.
- BYPASS jack (mono): Output for the audio signal when the tuner is off or in bypass mode.
- DISPLAY/BRIGHT button: Controls display modes and brightness.
- CALIB button: Used for calibration and reference pitch settings.
- BUFFERED/TRUE BYPASS switch: Selects between ultra-buffer and true bypass modes.
- Tuning LED meter: The primary display for tuning accuracy.
- INPUT jack (mono): Connects the instrument's signal to the tuner.
- Note name display: Shows the detected note name.
- Guitar, etc.: Example of an instrument connection.
Connections
Important: Turn off the power of all connected devices before making any connections to prevent damage to your equipment.
The INPUT and BYPASS jacks are mono. Stereo (TRS) cables will not work with these jacks.
DC 9 V IN jack
Connect a separately sold AC adapter (9 V, [center-positive], 600 mA or greater) to this jack. Using an AC adapter not recommended by Korg may cause a malfunction or damage.
INPUT jack
Connect a cable from your instrument to the INPUT jack of the tuner. Connecting a cable here turns on the power, and the reference pitch setting will blink in the note name display for several seconds. Connecting a cable powers the unit but does not engage tuner mode. Press the TUNER ON/OFF switch to activate tuner mode.
BYPASS jack
Connect a cable from the BYPASS jack to your other effect pedals or amplifier. When the tuner is switched on, the signal from the INPUT jack is muted for silent tuning. The signal is output from this jack when the tuner is off.
BUFFERED/TRUE BYPASS switch
This switch allows you to select between ultra-buffer bypass and true bypass modes. The ultra-buffer circuit enhances the dynamic range of the sound, helping to prevent signal thinning when using long cables or multiple pedals. True bypass outputs the input audio signal without any alteration.
Tuning procedure
- Press the TUNER ON/OFF switch to activate the tuner. The LED meter and/or the note name display will light up. The signal from the INPUT jack will be muted and not output from the BYPASS jack. Tip: The TUNER ON/OFF switch only functions if an instrument is connected to the INPUT jack.
- If necessary, set the reference pitch and the display mode. Refer to "Reference pitch settings" (page 5) and "Display mode settings" (page 6).
- Play a single note on your instrument. Tune it until the desired note appears in the note name display. The note name closest to the played note will be shown.
- Use the tuning LED meter to fine-tune your instrument. The method for indicating whether the pitch is in tune, sharp, or flat depends on the selected display mode (see "Display mode settings", page 6).
- Once tuning is complete, press the TUNER ON/OFF switch again to turn the tuner off. The LED meter and note name display will go dark. The signal from the INPUT jack will now be output to the BYPASS jack. Tip: The reference pitch, display mode, and bright mode settings are preserved even if the AC adapter is removed. Tip: To reset all settings to factory defaults (reference pitch = 440 Hz, display mode = regular, bright mode = brighter), hold down the CALIB button and press the TUNER ON/OFF switch while turning on the tuner.
Reference pitch settings
Set the reference pitch for tuning (the A note, A4) within the 436–445 Hz range. The Pitchblack XS is factory-set to A=440 Hz.
- Press the CALIB button. The current setting will blink in the note name display for several seconds.
- While the setting is displayed, press the CALIB button repeatedly to cycle through the available reference pitch settings:
- 0: 440Hz
- 1: 441Hz
- 2: 442Hz
- 3: 443Hz
- 4: 444Hz
- 5: 445Hz
- 6: 436Hz
- 7: 437Hz
- 8: 438Hz
- 9: 439Hz
- After selecting the desired setting, wait for approximately two seconds without pressing any buttons. The note name display will blink three times, indicating that the reference pitch has been set. The Pitchblack XS will then automatically return to tuner mode. Tip: Reference pitch settings are preserved even if the AC adapter is removed.
Display mode settings
Select one of four display patterns to indicate whether your instrument is out of tune. The factory setting is Regular mode.
- Press the DISPLAY/BRIGHT button. The current setting will blink in the note name display for several seconds.
- While the setting is displayed, press the DISPLAY/BRIGHT button repeatedly to select a display pattern. The available settings are:
With all display modes, the tuning guide LEDs indicate pitch direction. When the tuning is correct, both [indicator-left] and [indicator-right] light up. If the pitch is flat, the [indicator-left] lights up; and if the pitch is sharp, the [indicator-right] lights up.
1: Regular
Tune your instrument until the LED at the center of the LED meter lights up brightly. The LEDs on the meter light up from center to right if the pitch is sharp (high), and from center to left if the pitch is flat (low).
Regular Mode Display: Shows three states: "The pitch is flat." (LEDs to the left lit), "In tune." (center LED lit), and "The pitch is sharp." (LEDs to the right lit). 2: Strobe
Tune your instrument until the LEDs stop running. This mode offers higher precision for tuning accuracy. The LEDs light up, running from left to right if the pitch is high, and from right to left if the pitch is low.
Strobe Mode Display: Shows three states: "The pitch is flat." (LEDs running right-to-left), "In tune." (LEDs stopped), and "The pitch is sharp." (LEDs running left-to-right). 3: Half-strobe
Tune your instrument until the LEDs stop running and only the center LED is lit. The right-hand LEDs will strobe if the pitch is high, and the left-hand LEDs will strobe if the pitch is low.
Half-strobe Mode Display: Shows three states: "The pitch is flat." (left LEDs strobing), "In tune." (center LED lit), and "The pitch is sharp." (right LEDs strobing). - After selecting the desired display mode, wait for approximately two seconds without pressing any buttons. The note name display will blink twice, indicating the mode has been set. The Pitchblack XS will automatically return to tuner mode. Tip: Display mode settings are preserved even if the AC adapter is removed.
BRIGHT mode (brightness) settings
This function adjusts the display brightness, offering two levels. The factory default setting is brighter.
- Hold down the DISPLAY/BRIGHT button. The brightness of the display will change. The Pitchblack XS will automatically return to tuner mode. Tip: Bright mode settings are preserved even if the AC adapter is removed.
