DC-DC Introduction
Why Choose DC-DC ?
A block diagram shows two DC inputs connected to two DC outputs, representing a DC-DC conversion.
- AC-DC rectifier + DC-DC point-of-load application
- Long wiring causes voltage drop; add DC-DC to pull up voltage and solve the voltage drop issue.
- For locations without AC power, DC-DC converters provide power to loads from battery or renewable energy sources.
- Reduce ripple and noise.
- Additional isolation improves equipment safety.
AC-DC + DC-DC Point-of-Load Application
This diagram illustrates a power flow starting from Utility AC input (90-264Vac) going through an AC/DC power supply to produce 48Vdc. This 48Vdc can then be transformed by an Isolated DC/DC converter to 12Vdc, which feeds into a Load. Multiple paths exist, including direct transformation to 12Vdc or using a Boost voltage DC/DC converter. The diagram also notes 'Voltage drop due to cable length'. The applications for this setup include Data center, Telecom, and Networking.
No Utility AC – Power from DC Source
This diagram shows power generation without utility AC. A DC source (24~110Vdc) is stabilized by a DC/DC converter, producing 12/24/48Vdc. This can then be transformed by an Isolated DC/DC converter to 5Vdc for a Load, or by a Non-Isolated converter to 12Vdc, which is then processed by a DC-DC converter for noise reduction, also feeding into a Load. This setup is applicable for Railway systems.
Additional Isolation
This diagram demonstrates upgrading system safety. Utility AC input (90-264Vac) is converted by an AC/DC power supply to 24Vdc. A Medical grade DC/DC converter then reduces leakage current and meets MOPP*2 standards, providing various output voltages (3.3 Vdc, 5 Vdc, 12Vdc, 15 Vdc, ±12 Vdc, +15 Vdc, etc.) to a Medical device Load.
