1 Overview

The HSM340 Synchronous Module is specifically designed for the automatic parallel operation of 400Hz system gensets. Based on pre-set parameters, the module automatically detects genset parallel conditions, including voltage difference, frequency difference, and phase, and sends a parallel signal when these conditions are met.

The HSM340 Synchronous Module is suitable for synchronizing generators to the bus. It is simple to operate, easy to install, and widely used for both ship and land-based gensets.

2 Performance and Characteristics

Main characteristics include:

  • Compatibility with 3-phase 4-wire, 3-phase 3-wire, 2-phase 3-wire, and single-phase 2-wire power systems operating at 400Hz frequency.
  • Adjustable potentiometers for setting key synchronization parameters.
  • Operating parameters can be configured via PC test software. The LINK port connects to a computer using the SG72 module (USB to LINK).
  • Four relay outputs: two for speed UP and DOWN control, one SYNC relay for sync close output, and one STATUS relay for output status.
  • One INH digital input for "inhibit sync close output". When active, it prevents the sync close relay from activating even if synchronization conditions are met, while the SYNC indicator illuminates.
  • Wide power supply range: DC(8~35)V.
  • 35mm guide rail mounting.
  • Modular design with pluggable terminals for compact structure and easy installation.

6 Function Description

The HSM340 Synchronous Module's primary function is to synchronize a generator to a bus. When the voltage difference, frequency difference, and phase difference are within pre-set values, it sends a synchronization signal to close the generator's switch. The module's ability to set switch close response time makes it suitable for gensets with various power sources.

Users can configure over-voltage, under-voltage, over-frequency, and under-frequency thresholds for both the generator and the bus using the PC monitoring software. Once the module detects normal voltage and frequency for both the generator and bus, it begins speed adjustment. When all differences (voltage, frequency, phase) are within the pre-set parameters, it issues the synchronization signal to close the generator switch.

7 Raise/Drop Speed Relay Output Control

When the deviation area Xp is set to 2Hz, the working principle of the raise/drop speed relay is as follows:

Fig.3 - Working Principle of Raise/Drop Speed Relay: This diagram illustrates the relationship between frequency deviation and regulator output. The graph shows distinct zones:

  • Fix up signal: Below 398Hz.
  • Up pulse: Between 398Hz and 400Hz.
  • No reg.: Around 400Hz.
  • Down pulse: Between 400Hz and 402Hz.
  • Fix down signal: Above 402Hz.

The relay output regulation function is divided into 5 steps:

No.RangeDescriptionNote
1Fix Up SignalContinuous raise signalAdjusting activation. For too large derivation, relay has to activate continuously.
2Up PulseRaise the pulseSystem adjusting activation. Relay works in pulse to eliminate derivation.
3No Reg.No regulationNo regulation in this area.
4Down PulseDrop down the pulseSystem adjusting activation. Relay works in pulse to extinguish derivation.
5Fix Down SignalContinuous drop signalSystem adjusting activation. For too large derivation, drop relay will remain in activating status.

As the figure shows, when the adjusting deviation Xp exceeds the pre-set value, the relay will be in continuous activating status. When Xp is not large, the relay will work in pulse. In the "Up Pulse" zone, the smaller the derivation, the shorter the pulse becomes. When the regulator output value is close to "No Reg.", the pulse width will be the shortest. When the regulator output value is nearest to the "Down Pulse", the pulse width will be the longest.

8 Typical Diagram

Fig.4 - HSM340 3Phase 3Wire Typical Application: This diagram illustrates a typical wiring setup for the HSM340 module in a 3-phase 3-wire system. It shows connections for:

  • DC24V Power Supply: Terminals 1 and 2.
  • Genset Voltage Input: Terminals 9 (L1) and 10 (L2).
  • Bus Voltage Input: Terminals 11 (L1) and 12 (L2).
  • Control Inputs/Outputs: INH (Terminal 3), DOWN Output (Terminal 5), UP Output (Terminal 7), SYNC Output (Terminals 13-15), STATUS Output (Terminal 16).
  • Communication: LINK port.
  • The diagram connects the module to a generator (GEN.) with L1, L2, L3 outputs and a bus.

9 Case Dimension

Fig.5 - Overall Dimensions: The physical dimensions of the HSM340 module are:

  • Width: 71.6mm
  • Height: 60.7mm
  • Depth: 89.7mm
  • The module is designed for a 35mm guide rail mounting.

10 Installation Notes

10.1 Output and Expand Relays

All outputs are relay contact outputs. If it is necessary to expand relays, please add a freewheel diode to both ends of the expand relay's coils (for DC current coils) or add a resistance-capacitance loop (for AC current coils) to prevent disturbance to the controller or other equipment.

10.2 Withstand Voltage Test

⚠️ CAUTION! When the controller has been installed on a control panel, if a high voltage test is required, please disconnect all relay terminal connections. This is to prevent high voltage from entering the relay and causing damage.
