Function
The sand filter utilizes special filter sand to remove dirt particles from pool water. The sand acts as the permanent dirt-removing media. In the FILTER position, pool water containing suspended dirt particles is pumped through the system and directed by the control valve to the top of the filter tank. Dirt particles are trapped by the sand bed. Cleaned water is returned from the bottom of the tank, through the control valve, and back to the pool. This process recirculates pool water. Over time, accumulated dirt increases resistance, reducing flow. This indicates the filter needs cleaning.
When the control valve is in the BACKWASH position, water flow is reversed through the filter, directed to the bottom of the tank, up through the sand, flushing trapped dirt and debris out the waste line. After backwashing, set the control valve to RINSE, run the pump for 1/2 to 1 minute, then return to FILTER to resume normal filtering.
NOTE: Turn the pump off before changing the valve position.
Installation
Simple tools such as a screwdriver and wrenches, along with pipe sealant for plastic adapters, are required for installation and servicing.
- Place the filter on a level concrete slab, very firm ground, or equivalent. Position it for convenient access to piping connections and the control valve.
- Load the sand media through the top opening of the filter.
- Loosen the flange clamp and remove the filter control valve (if previously installed).
- Cap the internal pipe with a plastic cap to prevent sand entry.
- Fill the tank approximately halfway with water to create a cushion effect when pouring sand. This helps protect the under-drain laterals from shock.
- Carefully pour in the correct amount and grade of filter sand. Ensure the center pipe remains centered. The sand surface should be leveled and reach about the middle of the filter tank. Remove the plastic cap from the internal pipe.
- Assemble the filter control valve to the filter tank.
- Insert the filter control valve (with O-ring) into the tank neck, ensuring the center pipe aligns with the hole at the bottom of the valve.
- Place two plastic clamps around the valve flange and tank flange. Tighten just enough to allow final positioning without rotation.
- Carefully screw the pressure gauge (with O-ring) into the tapped hole in the valve body. Do not overtighten.
- Connect the pump to the control valve opening marked "PUMP". After connections are made, tighten valve flange clamps with a screwdriver, tapping gently around the clamp with the screwdriver handle to ensure a proper seat.
- Connect the pool return pipe to the control valve opening marked "RETURN". Complete other necessary plumbing connections, such as suction lines to the pump and waste lines.
- Make electrical connections to the pump according to the pump's instructions.
- Ensure all pipe connections are tight to prevent water leakage.

Install/Start-Up of Filter
- Ensure the correct amount of filter media sand is in the tank and all connections are secure.
- Depress the control valve handle and rotate to the BACKWASH position. (To prevent damage to the control valve seal, always depress the handle before turning.)
- Prime and start the pump according to pump instructions (ensure suction and return lines are open), allowing the filter tank to fill with water. Once water flows from the waste line, run the pump for at least 1 minute. Initial back-washing is recommended to remove impurities or fine sand particles.
- Turn the pump off and set the valve to the RINSE position. Start the pump and operate for about 1/2 to 1 minute until the water in the sight glass is clear. Turn the pump off, set the valve to FILTER, and restart the pump. The filter is now operating in normal filter mode.
- Adjust pool suction and return valves for desired flow. Check the system and filter for leaks and tighten connections, bolts, and nuts as needed.
- Note the initial pressure gauge reading when the filter is clean. This reading will vary. As the filter collects dirt, pressure will rise and flow will diminish. When the pressure gauge reading is 1.5 bar higher than the initial clean pressure, it is time to backwash the filter (refer to BACKWASH function description).
NOTE: During initial pool water clean-up, frequent backwashing may be necessary due to heavy initial dirt load.

Safety Warnings
THIS FILTER OPERATES UNDER HIGH PRESSURE. When any part of the circulating system (e.g., clamp, pump, filter, valves, etc.) is serviced, air can enter the system and become pressurized. Pressurized air can cause the lid or valve to be blown off, which can result in severe injury, death, or property damage.
TURN THE PUMP OFF BEFORE CHANGING THE VALVE POSITION.
TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE PUMP AND FOR PROPER OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM, CLEAN THE PUMP STRAINER AND SKIMMER BASKETS REGULARLY.
DO NOT UNSCREW THE SCREWS OFF LANGE CLAMP WHILE THE PUMP IS RUNNING.
