The Prez Sez...
By Nicholas AF6CF
August is here, and this means that there is less than a year to the next ARRL Summer Field Day. We hope that next year will be as fantastic as this one was, with our "back to normal" fully implemented. In the meantime, we have big plans for the rest of the year with the next meetings, the Club Auction in October and a couple of excellent speakers for this month, September and November meetings. Thanks to the generosity of its members, the Club did not lose too much money on the Field Day activity as expected. And we had a great score, too.

at
The Board of Directors has appointed an Elections Nomination Committee to gather candidates for next year's Board. Because of the pandemic, all directors remained in their positions for the current year. This means that all of us are "termed out" and now is the opportunity for you to get a position on the Board. Please consider helping the Club by serving in a position. Just contact any of us if you are interested. The Elections Committee will be contacting member as well to fill the elections slate. The word is that the Directors want "new blood" for next year. Mark your calendars for the Christmas Party on December 9th. As usual, I look forward to an eyeball contact with you all at the next General Meeting.

August Speaker Spotlight: Chris Claborne N1CLC Plus
Southern California Summits On The Air (SOTA) Links

Chris N1CLC has only been a ham for about 5 years. But in that short time he has accomplished what many of us take decades to do. He has been all over California and Arizona activating SOTA summits, and one of his latest was Cerro Trigo in a remote area of eastern Arizona on July 9th. He is a big fan of CW, as he finds it an efficient way to make contacts from the mountaintops. He sometimes uses a Ninja e-bike to get to the summits. His website is his callsign www.n1clc.com
Professionally, Chris has been in the world of IT for over 28 years for many Fortune 500 companies, and is currently with Qualcomm. His specialty is cloud computing, and writes a blog on that subject at http://cloudrant.com/.. He has many other interests, including photography, coaching soccer, and has coached for a Science Olympiad.

NEW OCARC Member Q&A
The OCARC New Member Q&A is a new feature to help introduce our newer members, learn about how they got interested in amateur radio, why they joined OCARC and what their interests are as an amateur operator.
This month we "interview" Neil, N6VHF.
Can you tell us something about yourself? My name is Neil Armstrong Jessen. I was born the same day Astronaut Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. My parents decided to name me after him. I have a 15-year-old son and I live with my fiancé in Chino. I have worked for the County of Orange for over 22 years and manage our County-Wide Surplus Program. When I have free time, I like to spend it in the eastern Sierra area (Bishop, Mammoth, Bridgeport).
How did you become interested in amateur radio? My parents gave me a police scanner when I was about 5 or 6 years old, got a few walkie-talkies and that began my interest in the magic of radio. I was fortunate that my dad had a CB radio in his pickup which towed a travel trailer. I have been around radios and interested in propagation for most of my life. At around age 16-17, I had a close friend who was a ham operator, and I would go to his home and listen to him work HF DX. That's when I knew that I had to get my Amateur radio license. I began studying CW and theory and received my Novice license at the early age of 17.
What has been your amateur radio involvement so far? Ham Radio has been such a fun "hobby" for me. Over the years I have dabbled in many different areas of this fascinating hobby, and I especially enjoy contesting and working DX. I am sitting at 300 confirmed DXCC (QSO's) but haven't worked DX at home since I relocated because of the HOA CC&R's which don't allow external antennas. I hope someday soon to be able to remedy this situation when I retire or if I ever relocate into an area without an HOA. Also I was involved in Amateur Satellites, like working Oscar's 10 & 13, as well as several of the Russian LEO satellites and into packet radio back in the day. I have done a LOT of VHF/UHF contesting and came in 2nd place in the Nation as a Rover in one of the ARRL contests.

(Continued from page 6)
Currently I hold an Advanced Class license and really have no intention of upgrading to Extra Class. With that said I like the nostalgia of having a license that is no longer issued. Besides, the amount of spectrum I'd get for upgrading really isn't worth it to me.
What equipment and antennas are you presently operating? I relocated approximately 10 years ago to a home that is located in an HOA, and restrictions on external (ham) antennas and as a such I don't have a station like I had previously. I have installed a stealth random length wire that is carefully hidden on my patio which allows me to operate FT8.
I have also been playing around with DMR and operating on VHF/UHF including some of the local repeaters with my Anytone HT. I also own a few Kenwood radios that are on the 900 MHz (33-centimeter) ham bands. I use my old FT-847 to work HF and 6 meters and have an old FT-100D and an ATAS-120 that I can use in the car.
Describe your current and future interests in amateur radio. Currently my interests are in the amateur microwave bands. I have finally put together a decent 10 GHz microwave station and have been having a blast with it. Every time I take my radio and operate this band I am amazed at the unique and exciting propagation opportunities. For example, a few weeks ago, I easily worked my friend Pat (N6RMJ) from my house in Chino to his house in Bullhead City, Arizona. We were using the monsoons and bouncing our signals off the rain clouds. Yeah, that's approximately 200 miles, with both stations at ground level (not on a hilltops) and I was only running 2.5 watts. Yep, 2 ½ watts. Wow! In addition, we have also successfully completed that same distance using aircraft scatter (bouncing signals off airplanes).
I am just getting started on microwave and can't wait to make more exciting firsts on the 10 GHz band. When I retire, I hope to purchase a nice piece of real estate so I can put up a decent HF station. Once that happens, I can begin working on obtaining DXCC Honor Roll and hopefully the DXCC #1 Honor Roll. Maybe by then, there will be someone active from P5? It's probably not going to happen but we can always dream!
