Pressing any button turns on the LCD back light for approximately 10 seconds.

Installing Batteries

Open the battery compartment by pulling off the hinged battery door. Insert two "AAA" batteries with correct polarity. Align the battery door and snap it shut.

Insta-Sync® Technology

With both units off, sync by pressing the power button on the receiver then the transmitter, or vice versa. To re-sync, press and hold the re-sync button on the transmitter for 2 seconds. To re-sync the receiver, press and hold the °F/°C and power buttons together for 2 seconds.

Link Loss Alarm

A loss of signal alarm will first cause the receiver to flash silently for 48 seconds, then flash silently for 3 minutes before becoming audible. This provides a grace period for re-syncing.

Setup of the Unit

The XR-50R comes with two 3" / 7.6 cm and two 6" / 15.2 cm hybrid probes. Insert each probe jack into their corresponding color plug-in on the transmitter unit. Turn on the transmitter, then the receiver (or vice versa). Wait for temperatures to display on both units.

Set Alarm Temperatures on the Transmitter

Factory alarms are set for Probe 1 & 2: High 250°F / 121°C, Low 220°F / 104°C. Probe 3 & 4: High 160°F / 71°C, Low 32°F / 0°C (Low alarm bypassed).

To set alarms:

  1. Press a PROBE button (1-4). The probe temperature and its surrounding square will flash.
  2. Press the same button again; the HIGH temperature alarm will flash.
  3. Press UP/DOWN to adjust the HIGH temperature alarm.
  4. Press SET to lock the HIGH alarm. The LOW alarm temperature will flash.
  5. Press UP/DOWN to adjust the LOW temperature alarm.
  6. Press SET to lock the LOW alarm.

To set only a HIGH alarm for meat, press UP/DOWN simultaneously. The low alarm will default to 32°F. Press SET to lock the HIGH alarm.

Repeat for other probes. Press the ALARM button to turn on alarms for all probes. In ALARM mode, press and hold a PROBE button to disable the alarm for that probe only. Pressing ALARM again disables all probe alarms.

Programmed alarms are remembered when the device is turned off. To silence an audible alarm, press the ALARM button on the transmitter for the transmitter's beep, or press any button on the receiver for the receiver's beep.

Setup of the Grill

Place meat on the grill rack. Insert the 6" / 15.2 cm FOOD probe into the thickest part of the meat, avoiding bones or fat. Clip a 3" / 7.6 cm BARBECUE probe to the grill rack about 2" / 5 cm away from the meat to monitor grill temperature. Ensure probe wires do not contact flames and are not pinched by the grill cover. Position the transmitter away from the grill's heat source; do not place it on or under the closed cover. The transmitter is waterproof for rain but not submersible.
