Section IP: Instrument Panel
This document provides detailed service information for the Instrument Panel (IP) and Center Console of the Nissan Juke.
Precautions
General Precautions: Always observe the following for preventing accidental activation:
- To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in the event of a collision, all maintenance must be performed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
- Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal injury caused by unintentional activation.
- Never use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed. SRS wiring harnesses are identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or connectors.
Precautions When Using Power Tools (Air or Electric) and Hammers:
- When working near the Air Bag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Air Bag System sensors with the ignition ON or engine running, never use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a hammer. Heavy vibration could activate the sensor(s) and deploy the air bag(s), possibly causing serious injury.
- When using air or electric power tools or hammers, always switch the ignition OFF, disconnect the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before performing any service.
Service Notes:
- Disconnect battery negative terminal in advance.
- Disconnect air bag system line in advance.
- Never tamper with or force air bag lid open.
- Be careful not to scratch parts.
- When removing or disassembling any part, be careful not to damage or deform it. Protect parts with a shop cloth.
- When removing parts with a screwdriver or other tool, cover the tool surface with vinyl tape.
- Keep removed parts protected with a shop cloth.
- If a clip is deformed or damaged, replace it.
- If an unreusable part is removed, replace it with a new one.
- Tighten bolts and nuts firmly to the specified torque.
- After reassembly, check that each part functions correctly.
- Stain Removal:
- Water-soluble stains: Dip a soft cloth in warm water, squeeze tightly, wipe the stain, then wipe with a soft dry cloth.
- Oil stain: Dissolve synthetic detergent in warm water (2-3% density), dip cloth, wipe stain. Rinse with fresh water, squeeze cloth tightly, wipe off detergent. Wipe area with a soft dry cloth.
- Never use any organic solvent, such as thinner or benzine.

Symptom Diagnosis: Squeak and Rattle Trouble Diagnoses
This section guides technicians through diagnosing and repairing squeaks and rattles within the vehicle.
Work Flow
The diagnostic process follows these steps:
- Customer Interview
- Check Related Service Bulletins
- Locate the Noise and Identify the Root Cause
- Repair the Cause
- Confirm Repair
- Inspection End
Customer Interview
Interview the customer to determine conditions when the noise occurs. Use the Diagnostic Worksheet to document facts and customer comments. This is necessary to duplicate the conditions.
- The customer may not provide a detailed description; obtain all facts.
- If multiple noises exist, prioritize the customer's concern. A test drive with the customer can help.
- Isolate noise characteristics using provided descriptions to ensure consistent communication.
Noise Characteristics:
- Squeak: Like tennis shoes on a clean floor. Characterized by light contact, fast movement, road conditions, hard surfaces (high-pitched), softer surfaces (low-pitched), or edge-to-surface (chirping).
- Creak: Like walking on an old wooden floor. Characterized by firm contact, slow movement, twisting, rotational movement, and pitch dependent on materials.
- Rattle: Like shaking a baby rattle. Characterized by fast repeated contact, vibration, similar movement, loose parts, missing clips/fasteners, or incorrect clearance.
- Knock: Like a knock on a door. Characterized by hollow sounds, sometimes repeating, often brought on by driver action.
- Tick: Like a clock second hand. Characterized by gentle contacting of light materials, loose components, or driver action/road conditions.
- Thump: Heavy, muffled knock noise. Characterized by softer knock, dull sounds, often brought on by activity.
- Buzz: Like a bumblebee. Characterized by high frequency rattle, firm contact.
Note: Noise perception varies by individual. Weather conditions (humidity, temperature) can affect noise levels.
Duplicate the Noise and Test Drive
Drive the vehicle with the customer to duplicate the noise. If difficult, drive on undulating or rough roads. If duplication is easier when stopped, try actions like closing a door, tapping areas, revving the engine, using a floor jack for vehicle twist, applying engine load, or hitting a tire with a rubber hammer.
Check Related Service Bulletins
After verifying the customer concern, check ASIST for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and follow their procedures.
Locate the Noise and Identify the Root Cause
Use listening tools (Chassis ear, engine ear, stethoscope) to pinpoint the noise source. Identify the cause by removing suspected components, tapping/pushing/pulling them (without excessive force), feeling for vibrations, or placing paper between components. Look for loose components and contact marks.
Repair the Cause
If the cause is a loose component, tighten it. If it's insufficient clearance, separate or reposition components. Insulate components using urethane pads, foam blocks, felt cloth tape, or urethane tape. The NISSAN Squeak and Rattle Kit (J-43980) is available for this purpose.
CAUTION: Never use excessive force as many components are plastic.
NISSAN Squeak and Rattle Kit Contents:
- URETHANE PADS [1.5 mm thick]: For insulating connectors, harnesses, etc. (Part numbers and dimensions provided).
- INSULATOR (Foam blocks): For insulating components from contact, filling space behind panels. (Part numbers and dimensions provided).
- INSULATOR (Light foam block): (Part numbers and dimensions provided).
- FELT CLOTHTAPE
Additional materials like UHMW (TEFLON) TAPE, SILICONE GREASE, SILICONE SPRAY, and DUCT TAPE can also be used.
Instrument Panel Noise Sources:
Incidents are often caused by contact and movement between:
- Cluster lid A and instrument panel
- Acrylic lens and combination meter housing
- Instrument panel to front pillar garnish
- Instrument panel to windshield
- Instrument panel mounting pins
- Wiring harnesses behind the combination meter
- A/C defroster duct and duct joint
These can be located by tapping, moving components, or pressing on them. Repairs often involve felt cloth tape or silicone spray. Urethane pads can insulate wiring harnesses.
CAUTION: Never use silicone spray to isolate a squeak or rattle; it makes rechecking impossible.
Center Console Noise Sources:
Components to check include:
- Shifter assembly cover to finisher
- A/C control unit and cluster lid C
- Wiring harnesses behind audio and A/C control unit
Instrument panel isolation procedures also apply to the center console.
Door Noise Sources:
Check for:
- Finisher and inner panel making a slapping noise
- Inside handle escutcheon connection to door finisher
- Wiring harnesses tapping
- Door striker out of alignment causing popping noise
Insulation with felt cloth tape or foam blocks from the NISSAN Squeak and Rattle Kit can repair these noises.
Trunk Noise Sources:
Often caused by a loose jack or items in the trunk. Check for:
- Trunk lid dumpers out of adjustment
- Trunk lid striker out of adjustment
- Trunk lid torsion bars knocking together
- Loose license plate or bracket
Repairs involve adjusting, securing, or insulating the components.
Sunroof/Headlining Noise Sources:
Check for:
- Sunroof lid, rail, linkage, or seals
- Sunvisor shaft shaking
- Front or rear windshield touching headlining
Repairs usually involve insulating with felt cloth tape.
Seat Noise Sources:
Note seat position and load when isolating noise. Causes include:
- Headrest rods and holder
- Squeak between seat pad cushion and frame
- Rear seatback lock and bracket
Repairs may involve repositioning components or applying urethane tape.
Underhood Noise Sources:
Interior noise can be transmitted from under the hood. Causes include:
- Components mounted to the engine wall
- Components passing through the engine wall
- Engine wall mounts and connectors
- Loose radiator mounting pins
- Hood bumpers out of adjustment
- Hood striker out of adjustment
Isolate by securing, moving, or insulating components one at a time, or by changing engine RPM or load.
Diagnostic Worksheet
A worksheet is provided for customers to document noise location and conditions. It aids service advisors and technicians in confirming the noise.
