Getting Your Internet Running

This guide provides instructions for setting up your TP-LINK TD-W8961ND Wireless Modem Router. Ensure all package contents are present before proceeding.

Package Contents

The modem package should contain the following items:

• Internet Modem: The main router unit with two external antennas.
• CD: Contains drivers and utilities.
• Installation Guide: A printed manual similar to this document.
• ADSL Splitter: Used to separate phone and ADSL signals.
• Telephone Cable: An RJ11 cable for connecting to the phone line.
• Ethernet Cable: An RJ45 cable for wired network connections.
• Power Adapter: For powering the modem.

Familiarize Yourself with the Back of Your Modem

The back panel of the TP-LINK TD-W8961ND modem features several ports and buttons. From left to right, these typically include:

• Power Port: Where the power adapter connects.
• Reset Button: A small recessed button used to restore the modem to factory default settings. This requires pressing and holding for 5 seconds.
• Ethernet Ports (LAN 1-4): Multiple RJ45 ports for connecting wired Ethernet devices like computers or game consoles.
• ADSL Port: An RJ11 port for connecting to the telephone line via an ADSL splitter.

Connect Your Modem

Before connecting any cables, ensure the power supply is cut off and your hands are dry. Follow these steps to install your modem:

1. Use the ADSL Splitter: The splitter has three ports:

   • LINE: Connects to the wall phone jack.
   • PHONE: Connects to your telephone sets.
   • MODEM: Connects to the ADSL port of your modem.

2. Connect Telephone Cable: Plug one end of the telephone (RJ11) cable into your modem's ADSL port and the other end into the MODEM port of the ADSL splitter.

3. Connect Ethernet Cable: Connect one end of a network (RJ45) cable to your computer's Ethernet port and the other end to an Ethernet port on the modem.

4. Power On: Power on your computers and the modem.

5. Initialization: Wait for approximately 60 seconds until the modem has fully initialized.

6. Internet Surfing: Open a web browser and begin using the internet.

7. Wireless Connection: To use a wireless connection, select the Network Name (SSID) from your wireless device and enter the Wireless Key. Both the Network Name and Wireless Key are typically labeled on the bottom of your modem.

Front Panel LED Explanation

The front panel of the TP-LINK TD-W8961ND modem features several LED indicators that provide status information:

• ? Power: Indicates the modem router is powered on.
• ? ADSL: Indicates the ADSL line is synchronized and ready to use. If this light is off, check the ADSL port connection as described in the "Connect Your Modem" section.
• ? Internet: Indicates successful internet connection. If this light is off, proceed to the "Set up Your Internet Connection" section.
• ? LAN 1-4: Indicates a device is connected to the corresponding Ethernet port.
• ? WLAN (Wireless): Indicates that wireless functionality is enabled.
• ? WPS: Indicates the status of Wi-Fi Protected Setup.

Setup Internet Connection

1. Access Web Management Interface: Start your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Firefox) and type the IP address 192.168.1.1 into the URL field.

2. Login: In the login window, enter the default User Name admin and the default Password admin (both in lower case), then click OK.

   • Get IP Address: Static or Dynamic (example shows Static with 0.0.0.0 for IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway).
   • NAT: Enable.
   • Default Route: Yes.
   • TCP MTU Option: TCP MTU (default: 1480) 1442 bytes.
   • Dynamic Route: RP2-B. Direction: Both.
   • Multicast: Disabled.

   After making changes, click the "Save" button at the bottom.

Setup Wireless Network

1. Login: Follow the steps in the "Setup Internet Connection" section (steps 1 & 2) to log in to your modem's web interface.

2. Configure Wireless Parameters: Click "Interface Setup" then "Wireless" from the menu. Configure the parameters as shown in the example configuration, then click "Save".

   • Broadcast SSID: Yes.
   • Use WPS: No (Pick No for Use WPS).
   • SSID: Enter the Network Name printed on the label at the bottom of your modem.
   • Authentication Type: WEP-128bits (Select WEP-128 Bits).
   • WEP Keys: For WEP 64-bits, enter 5 characters (excluding symbols) or 10 characters (0-9, a-f). For WEP 128-bits, enter 13 characters (excluding symbols) or 26 characters (0-9, a-f). Enter the Wireless Key printed on the label at the bottom of your modem for Key#1.
   • WDS Mode: Off.
   • Wireless MAC Address Filter: Activated. Action: Allow Association. List of MAC Address fields (00:00:00:00:00:00).

   After making changes, click the "Save" button at the bottom.

Reset Your Modem

To reset your modem to the factory default state, press and hold the Reset button for 5 seconds.
