Precautions
- This camera is not water-resistant. Avoid use in snow. Contact an authorized Canon Service Facility if dropped in water. Protect from salt spray and excessive humidity. Clean with a dry cloth after beach use.
- Store the camera in a cool, dry, dust-free place, away from direct sunlight and "hot spots" like car trunks. Avoid areas with mothballs and use a desiccant in high humidity.
- Do not attempt to disassemble the camera, as it contains high-voltage circuits.
- Use a blower brush for dust and sand on the lens and body. Do not use fluids. For cleaning, contact a Canon Service Facility.
- Film may be exposed by airport X-rays, even when loaded. Request hand-checked inspection.
- Leaving film in the camera for extended periods can affect color reproduction. Develop exposed film promptly.
- Film becomes soft and tears easily in high humidity. Store it in its canister until use.
1. Loading the Battery
The camera requires two AA-size batteries.
- Open the battery chamber cover by lifting the latch from the bottom.
- Insert two new AA-size batteries as indicated inside the chamber. Close the cover until it clicks.
- Open the lens cover by sliding the lens cover switch down.
Diagram Description: Illustrations show the process of opening the battery compartment, inserting batteries with correct polarity indicated, and closing the cover. Another diagram shows sliding the lens cover switch.
2. Holding the Camera and Shutter Button Action
Proper handling ensures sharp pictures.
- Put the neckstrap around your neck and hold the camera firmly.
- Keep your left elbow close to your body.
- Hold the camera lightly against your nose and look into the viewfinder.
- Ensure your fingers or hair do not block the lens, metering window, or flash.
- Spread your feet about shoulder width for a steady, natural stance.
- Gently press the shutter button all the way down with the ball of your finger.
Diagram Description: Illustrations demonstrate the correct way to hold the camera, including posture and hand placement. A diagram labels the camera's Metering Window, Flash, and Lens. An icon depicts footprints indicating proper foot spacing.
Note on Shutter Button Action: Pressing the shutter too quickly with a fingertip or fingernail can cause "camera shake," resulting in blurry photos.
3. Loading the Film
Follow these steps to load film:
- Avoid loading film in direct sunlight.
- Use color print film of ISO 100, 200, or 400.
- Set the film speed selector to match the ISO sensitivity indicated on the film cartridge.
- Open the back cover by sliding the back cover latch up.
- Insert the protruding end of the film cartridge into the bottom of the film chamber.
- Pull the film leader straight across until the tip reaches the film mark.
- Ensure the film lies flat and its perforations engage with the sprocket teeth. Close the back cover.
- Open the lens cover and press the shutter button three or four times until "1" aligns with the frame counter mark.
Diagram Description: Illustrations show setting the film speed dial, opening the back cover, inserting the film cartridge, and pulling the film leader. Another diagram shows the film lying flat with perforations engaged.
Note: If the frame counter dial does not turn, reload the film. This camera is designed for negative film.
4. Film Rewinding
Rewind the film at the end of the roll.
- Press the film rewind button and slide the film rewind switch to start rewind.
- When "S" appears in the frame counter, press the film rewind button to stop.
Diagram Description: Illustrations show the film rewind button and switch operation. Another diagram shows the "S" indicator on the frame counter.
What is "film speed"? Film speed (ISO) indicates how sensitive the film is to light. Higher numbers mean greater sensitivity. Canon recommends ISO 100, 200, or 400 film.
5. Taking a Picture
Compose and capture your photos.
- Look into the viewfinder and compose the picture as desired.
- Gently press the shutter button completely to take the picture.
Diagram Description: A photograph shows four children in baseball uniforms, likely an example of a photo taken with the camera.
- Shooting Distances: Keep at least 4.9 ft (1.5 m) away from the subject with ISO 100 or 200 film, and at least 3.9 ft (1.2 m) with ISO 400 film.
- Low Light: In dark situations, the flash ready lamp pops up when the shutter button is pressed halfway. Press the shutter button completely after the lamp turns orange.
6. Flash Photography
The flash operates automatically in low light conditions.
- When the shutter button is pressed halfway, the flash's ready lamp pops up and turns orange to indicate flash charge completion.
- Press the shutter button completely only after the lamp turns orange.
- After taking flash photos, press the flash ready lamp down to minimize unnecessary battery drain.
Diagram Description: An illustration shows the flash ready lamp popping up on the camera. A photograph shows children in baseball uniforms.
Flash Distance Range:
ISO | Non-flash Photography | Flash Photography | Filter Photography |
---|---|---|---|
100, 200 | 4.9 ft to infinity 1.5 m to infinity | 4.9 to 10.4 ft 1.5 to 3.2 m | 4.9 ft to infinity 1.5 m to infinity |
400 | 3.9 ft to infinity 1.2 m to infinity | 3.9 to 10.4 ft 1.2 to 3.2 m | 3.9 ft to infinity 1.2 m to infinity |
Flash Notes:
- Replace batteries if the flash ready lamp takes more than 10 seconds to turn orange.
- Subject's eyes may appear red in flash photos due to reflected light. To minimize this, have the subject avoid looking directly at the camera.
7. Center Focus Filter
This filter keeps the center of the picture sharp while blurring the surrounding area for a soft, dreamy effect.
- Close the lens cover.
- Press the shutter button while pressing the filter switch in the direction of the arrow.
Diagram Description: Illustrations show closing the lens cover and pressing the shutter button while operating the filter switch. A photograph shows a child in a baseball uniform.
- The flash should not be used with the filter.
- The filter's effects are best in bright settings.
8. Self-timer Photography
The self-timer allows you to be in the picture by delaying the shutter release for 8 seconds.
- With the camera facing you, turn the self-timer dial clockwise until it stops.
- Look into the viewfinder and press the shutter button all the way down. The picture is taken 8 seconds after the shutter button is pressed.
Diagram Description: An illustration shows turning the self-timer dial. A photograph shows children in baseball uniforms.
- With Flash: Press the shutter button after the flash ready lamp turns orange.
- Cancellation: The self-timer can be cancelled by resetting the self-timer dial, but only before the shutter button is pressed.
