Configuring Audio Settings
Mono/Stereo Audio
The Mono/Stereo switch supports both Mono and Stereo audio streaming. In Mono mode, SurfLink Media 2 merges left and right audio channels for a single stream to a hearing aid. Use 'MONO' for one hearing aid and 'STEREO' for two.
Audio Fidelity
The vertical switch offers different audio fidelity formats. The bottom position ( ● ) streams audio to all wireless hearing aids. The top position ( ● + ) provides better audio quality for hearing aids marked with +. Consult your hearing professional if unsure.
TIP: When switching audio formats, SurfLink Media 2 resets and begins streaming the new format within 20 seconds.
LED Indicator
LED BEHAVIOR | SURFLINK MEDIA 2 STATE |
---|---|
Off | SurfLink Media 2 is turned off. SurfLink Media 2 does not detect any incoming audio. |
Blinks 5 times | During power up, LED blinks to signal SurfLink Media 2 is ready to stream audio. When the ● or ● + switch is changed, LED blinks as a reminder that a reboot is in process. |
Solid Green | Incoming audio is available. |
Blinking continuously | Possible error condition. See Troubleshooting section on page 16. |
A solid green LED during initial setup confirms a proper connection and detectable audio signal. If no streamed audio is heard, try changing hearing aid memories or pressing the [favorite button] on your remote control.
Audio streaming stops automatically when no incoming audio signal is detected. SurfLink Media 2 starts streaming when it detects 'meaningful' audio input. With an external microphone, it streams even in quiet environments. For best sound quality, maximize the audio source volume (50% or higher).
Front Panel Overview
The front panel includes controls for power, volume, and streaming activation:
- Power On/Off: The blue glowing power button turns SurfLink Media 2 on and off. When blue, it streams audio automatically when available.
- Volume Control: A slider bar adjusts the audio streaming level to hearing aids. More illuminated dots indicate higher volume. Adjustments do not affect hearing aid microphone volume or audio source volume. A setting of 60% or higher is recommended for best audio quality.
- Streaming Activation Control: A slider bar adjusts the distance at which hearing aids can initiate streaming. A fully illuminated bar (to the right) sets the maximum activation distance. Streaming continues until hearing aids move outside the maximum range.
Streaming to Hearing Aids
Starting and Stopping
Hearing aids can be set up for audio streaming in two ways by a hearing professional:
- "Automatic" streaming: Hearing aids start streaming when within the activation distance and in a streaming-enabled memory.
- "Manual" streaming: Hearing aids start streaming when within distance, in a streaming-enabled memory, and the user presses the [favorite button] on a remote control (requires SurfLink Advanced Remote or SurfLink Mobile accessory).
To stop audio streaming:
- Turn off SurfLink Media 2.
- Press the [favorite button] on your remote control.
- Change to a hearing aid memory environment not enabled for audio streaming.
- Power off the electronic audio source.
Interoperability with Other Accessories
The [favorite button] on a remote control can start and stop audio streaming. Aim the remote directly at SurfLink Media 2 for commands to be relayed to hearing aids. If using SurfLink Mobile, phone call streaming takes priority; SurfLink Media 2 audio resumes after the call ends.
Troubleshooting
SYMPTOM / ISSUE | POSSIBLE CAUSE | POSSIBLE REMEDY |
---|---|---|
One (or both) hearing aids unexpectedly drops out of audio streaming. | Hearing aids may be on the edge of wireless range. Battery level in hearing aid can no longer support audio streaming. SurfLink Media 2 may not be positioned for optimal streaming. Large object, such as furniture or a wall, may be degrading signal. | Move closer to SurfLink Media 2. Replace hearing aid battery with new one. Re-orient SurfLink Media 2 spatially by turning a few degrees to right or left. For best performance, your hearing aids should be within line-of-sight and about the same elevation as SurfLink Media 2. |
LED is solid green, but no streamed sounds are heard in the hearing aids. | Hearing aids are not within wireless range. Telephone memory may be active. Current audio fidelity setting is not supported by hearing aid. Audio cable may be connected to "audio IN" on electronic audio source. No incoming audio signal is available. Electronic audio source output is not correct format. | Move closer to SurfLink Media 2. Adjust the Streaming Activation Control slider to the far right. When telephone memory is active, streaming is stopped. Ensure hearing aid is in a memory capable of streaming. Adjust the audio fidelity switch to the bottom position ( ● ). Ensure the cable is plugged into "audio OUT" jack on the electronic audio source. Turn on the electronic audio source. Set the digital output on your electronic audio source to PCM. Audio formats not compatible with SurfLink Media 2 include RAW, Dolby Digital®, AC3 and MPEG. |
LED is off, but SurfLink Media 2 appears to be on. | (No specific cause listed, implies power issue or internal fault) | Remove power adaptor from jack #5, wait 5 seconds and reinsert power adapter. |
LED is blinking continuously. | Possible error condition. | (Refer to Troubleshooting section on page 16 for details) |
Streamed audio is not synchronized with the television picture. | Many new televisions (such as HDTVs) take a long time to process the video signal, so they may delay the audio to maintain synchronization. | Try using another audio output jack (which may require a different type of cable) on your television. Try using another electronic audio source. For example, if currently using a cable box, try the audio OUT on a television or vice-versa. Some electronic audio sources (such as televisions or A/V receivers) have a built-in option to adjust the timing sequence of audio and video. |
