Quicklag Circuit Protection
Quicklag Miniature Circuit Breaker and Residual Current Devices
Quicklag Miniature Circuit Breaker
Over 50 Years of Service to the Australian Electrical Industry
The Quicklag range of miniature circuit breakers was originally released in Australia by Email-Westinghouse in 1957 before the company changed its name to Cutler-Hammer and then to Eaton. Through the years, the Quicklag has been widely recognised as setting the electrical industry benchmark for Miniature Circuit Breakers. Some of the reasons include:
- Toggle centre position trip indication: Clearly shows when the breaker has tripped
- Ratings up to 100A in the one frame size: Common frame pole width to avoid the need for hybrid / mixed width chassis
- Ability to be mounted side-by-side without de-rating: Utilises the maximum rating of the breaker
- Fully integrated surge protection solution: With the use of Quickmov™™ Surge Diverters, connects to the chassis busbar for the lowest source impedance and maximum surge performance
Quicklag is the largest and most complete family of industrial thermal magnetic miniature circuit breakers. They provide the feature of steel frame calibration and arc chutes in every pole. Quicklag circuit breakers are provided in ranges from 8 to 100 amperes continuous in one, two, three and four-pole configurations.
The Quicklag family includes a range of electrical safety devices: the ELQ single and two poles RCBO and the ELDO single and multi-pole earth leakage circuit breakers. Accompanied by Echidna panel boards, busbar chassis and many accessories, including the Quickmov™™ integrated surge protection device. ELDO/QELDO Residual Current Device
The ELDO residual current relay will instantaneously detect a current imbalance due to earth leakage that may occur within the electrical distribution system. The ELDO will trip the associated circuit breaker, by means of a separate shunt trip fitted to the breaker and isolate the supply to create a safe condition.
The ELDO residual current device can be mounted on its own bracket or can be directly clipped into any Quicklag chassis, either separately or next to the Quicklag circuit breakers. In either formation, the two units are fitted as separate components. Each ELDO comes complete with a comprehensive instruction sheet detailing installation and connection information. These compact residual current relays fit into the same space as a single pole Quicklag breaker.
The QELDO is a combination of a residual current relay assembled with any Quicklag circuit breaker providing overload, short-circuit and earth leakage protection. The QELDO has an inbuilt shunt trip device for tripping the breaker. The QELDO is mechanically linked internally thereby optimising the tripping operation of the device. A QELDO can incorporate any of the characteristics and ratings associated with both the Quicklag miniature circuit breaker and the ELDO devices. QELDO is a made to order item.
The QELDO relay uses a mechanical link to trip the breaker and cannot be separated from the breaker. The QELDO and Quicklag breaker must be ordered assembled at the factory, also indicating which side the QELDO will be on (e.g. QELD034 + Q320 RHS).

Quickmov™ Surge Protection Device
Quickmov™ is an integrated Surge Protection Device (SPD), designed to protect single and multiphase electrical distribution systems against the damaging effects of voltage spikes and surges. Eaton's Quickmov™ plugs straight into a Quicklag loadcentre, connecting to the chassis busbar for the lowest source impedance. Its integrated HRC fuse enables the Quickmov™ to be connected directly to the neutral bar, providing the shortest possible cable length for superior protection of the entire loadcentre. It saves space and installation time by eliminating the need to install a separate over-current protection device. A wide range of accessories enables the Quickmov™ to be easily adapted to many other applications and most DIN loadcentres and panelboards. Quickmov™ employs advanced MOV technology with embedded thermal protection housed in a dual barrier flame retardant case to provide optimum surge protection performance without compromising safety and reliability. Installation
For main switchboard installations typically with an adjacent M.E.N point, the Quickmov™™ should be mounted directly on the chassis busbar and close as possible to the neutral bar on Quicklag style board otherwise mounting accessories will allow for installation in other types of switchboard or enclosure systems. For installation in distribution boards remote from the M.E.N point, the Quickmov™ should be used in conjunction with a SPD50NGi neutral-earth surge arrestor.
Operation
The Quickmov™™ uses a mechanical flag to indicate its operating and protection status. The flag is visible through the window on the front face of the unit. If the window is showing a "GREEN" coloured flag then the Quickmov™™ is functioning normally and there is still protection available. When the window changes to show a "RED" coloured flag, this means the unit is damaged and needs to be replaced. For more information on operation refer to the Quickmov™™ Installation Guide.

Manufactured by Eaton, designed and tested to the requirements of AS1136.1, AS3439.1 and 3, Quicklag chassis assemblies are available in a number of configurations. They are used by Eaton in Quicklag panelboards and by Original Equipment Manufacturer's in their own panelboard and switchboard assemblies throughout the electrical industry.
The Quicklag chassis is available in a standard 3 phase construction for either vertical or horizontal applications and is universal in that it can be fed from either end of the busbar chassis. The Quicklag chassis is also made to suit narrower applications and can be supplied in a half width format. A neutral pole busbar can be added to the 3 phase busbar system by Eaton.
Chassis without Main Switch
The Quicklag chassis consists of a galvanised steel base plate, 3 phase insulated busbars and insulated busbar supports. The base plate has two rows of clip in brackets for the mounting of Quicklag breakers while the busbar is mounted to the base plate by the insulated supports.
The standard Quicklag chassis assembly has been tested in accordance with AS1136.1, AS3439.1 and 3 and is rated for 250A continuous current and has a withstand capacity of 20kA for 0.1 seconds. Non-standard variations are available and can be selected from units with 250A, 16kA for 0.5 second or 300, 16kA for 1.0 second and 400A, 20kA for 1.0 second. To order the non-standard variation chassis please contact your local Eaton representative.
Chassis with Main Switch
The Quicklag chassis can be easily fitted with a Main Switch for isolating the supply to the chassis.
QT Series
The 100A Main Switch, a Quicklag Non-Auto Q3100N, can be mounted either in the top centre feeding into the chassis or can be positioned on the chassis pan where it will occupy 3 pole spaces of the chassis.
MT Series
A 250A or 400A Main Switch can be fitted readily to the standard Quicklag Chassis and provides many excellent characteristics such as visible indication of the positive load break and fault make contact operation. The operating handle is pad-lockable in the OFF position for added safety and security.

Eaton Quicklag Time Current Curve
Time-current curves show response times in seconds for applied overcurrent expressed in percentages of rated current. The values are for breakers operating in open air in an ambient of 40°C, or inside an enclosure in an ambient of 25°C, with no current through the breaker before application of overcurrent.
The characteristics are presented not as a single curve but as a band defined by maximum and minimum curves. The characteristic curve for any particular breaker will lie within this band. However, this does not imply that its tolerance band is as wide as the plotted band, which allows for manufacturing and calibrating variations for the range overall.

Fuse Backup
Fuse brands recommended are based on exhaustive type testing conducted at the Australia Electrical Test Centre, University of South Australia, in accordance with the relevant subclauses under clause 8.2.3 of Australian Standard AS3439.1-1993. Peak let-through current and energy, as stated by the respective fuse suppliers, have been detailed in the technical data grid below to assist in choosing a replacement fuse. The recommended back-up fuse ratings are valid for prospective system fault levels up to 50kA rms, 415VAC, 3-phase. The minimum fuse size which can be used for such applications is based on grading under overload, one breaker with one fuse. Minimum BS88/DIN fuse sizes recommended for use with Eaton circuit breakers is as follows: Quicklag 8-16A: 63A; Quicklag 20-40A: 80A; Quicklag 50-63A: 100A; Quicklag 80-100A: 160A; ELQ-TW 10-32A: 63A.
