Clinically effective DVT prophylaxis pump systems and anti-embolism stockings

ALMOST ALL HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS HAVE AT LEAST ONE RISK FACTOR FOR VTE.1
VTE (venous thromboembolism) is a disease that encompasses both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. It is a serious, often under diagnosed but preventable complication during and after an acute medical illness or surgery. DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a major vein, usually in the leg. Part of the clot may break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE). PE accounts for five to 10 percent of deaths in hospitalized patients, making VTE the most common preventable cause of in-hospital deaths.2 DVT and PE are deemed nonreimbursable by CMS.3
2 MEDLINE

Risk Factors
Hospital patients have a higher risk for DVT because
of their limited mobility, active disease processes
and comorbidities. Risk factors include:4

»» Immobility »» Hypercoagulability »» Vessel wall damage »» Age

»» Increased estrogen levels (due to oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy)

»» Surgery (especially orthopedic surgery and total knee replacement)
»» Heredity (including the Factor V Leiden genetic mutation)

»» Obesity »» Smoking »» Pregnancy »» Cancer »» Crohn's Disease

ENHANCING PATIENT OUTCOMES.
Pneumatic compression pumps and garments lower the risk of DVT by replicating the body's normal musculovenous pump activity.5, 6 During treatment, the inflation-deflation cycle of the pump forces blood out of the legs toward the heart.5, 6 Numerous studies demonstrate that pneumatic compression not only helps reduce morbidity and mortality, but also provides a low-cost and more conservative solution compared with surgical intervention and drug therapy.6

Choose the Therapy That's Right for Your Patients and Facility.
Only Medline offers the choice of all three mechanical methods
of DVT prophylaxis clinically proven to help prevent DVT.5

Intermittent pneumatic compression
Hemo-Force® and Hemo-Force II DVT pumps and single bladder sleeves produce alternating compression of foot, calf or thigh with uniform compression.

Sequential pneumatic compression
Hemo-Force SQ and Hemo-Force II SQ DVT pumps and 3-bladder sleeves create a wave of compression for foot, calf or thigh with gradient compression.

Static nondynamic compression
Medline EMS® compression stockings provide constant, graduated compression from foot to knee or foot to thigh.

Hemo-Force DVT Prophylaxis Pumps
Medline Hemo-Force and Hemo-Force II pumps offer both intermittent and sequential options to address clinician judgment, patient needs and facility protocols. They are suitable for DVT reduction in acute care environments, in the pre-, intra-, and post-surgery phases, as mono therapy or when combined with anti-coagulation therapy.

Hemo-Force Prophylaxis Sleeves
Comfortable and Easy to Apply for Enhanced Compliance
Poor patient compliance is a leading obstacle to DVT prophylaxis. Patient complaints include sweating, itching and discomfort from too tight sleeves7 or uncomfortable material. Medline DVT sleeves have thoughtful features that maximize patient comfort and caregiver efficiency.

»» Soft breathable lining, rounded edges, added padding to cushion the tubing exit point and a unique hose angle make the sleeves exceptionally comfortable
»» Size markings, application instructions and illustrations are printed right on the sleeve, providing just-in-time guidance for appropriate clinical use

Smooth nylon/tricot material minimizes sweating, skin irritation and itchiness

Tools for Better Care
Our free color-coded measuring tapes help ensure your patients have the proper size sleeve for their compression therapy. Measuring instructions are right on the tape.
Communication is the cornerstone of compliance. Our complimentary patient education card encourages discussion between patients and caregivers about VTE, why they're receiving compression therapy and the importance of following instructions.

Continue Needed Therapy After Discharge.

Studies show that patients remain at risk for DVT for up to three months after surgery. Therefore, it's vital that DVT preventive care doesn't end at discharge.8
Medline provides an easy-to-implement program that allows you to continue DVT compression therapy at home. It's the only program available with a DVT pump that tracks patient compliance to ensure they're getting the therapy they need. Best of all, Medline handles everything--billing, shipping, paperwork and patient education.
Ask your Medline Rep how to add the Home DVT Prevention Program to your discharge planning.

"For patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery, we suggest extending thromboprophylaxis in the outpatient period for up to 35 days from the day of surgery rather than for only 10 to 14 days."
-- ACCP Guidelines9
