FCC Warnings and Information
FCC WARNING: This equipment generates or uses radio frequency energy. Changes or modifications may cause harmful interference unless expressly approved in the manual. Unauthorized changes can void the user's authority to operate the equipment.
INFORMATION TO THE DIGITAL DEVICE USER REQUIRED BY THE FCC: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with Class B digital device limits per FCC Rules Part 15. These limits provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in residential installations. This equipment generates radio frequency energy and may cause interference if not installed and used per instructions. If interference occurs, try the following measures:
- Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
- Increase separation between equipment and receiver.
- Connect equipment to a different circuit than the receiver.
- Consult the dealer for technical assistance.
Safety Precautions
It is important that the operator understands hazards common to transceiver operation.
WARNING!
- EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES (GASES, DUST, FUMES, etc.): Turn off and do not operate your transceiver while refueling or parked in gasoline service stations. Do not carry spare fuel containers in the trunk if the transceiver is mounted there.
- INJURY FROM RADIO FREQUENCY TRANSMISSIONS: Do not operate the transceiver when anyone is touching the antenna or within two to three feet of it to avoid radio frequency burns or related physical injury.
- DYNAMITE BLASTING CAPS: Transceiver operation can explode blasting caps within 500 feet. Turn off and do not operate in areas where blasting is in progress or where "TURN OFF TWO-WAY RADIO" signs are posted. Transport blasting caps in a closed metal box with a padded interior. Do not transmit while placing or removing caps from the container.
Unpacking and Checking Equipment
Note: These instructions are for use by KENWOOD dealers, authorized service facilities, or the factory. Carefully unpack the transceiver and identify all items before discarding packing material. File any shipping damage claims immediately.

Installation and Connection
WARNING: INTERFERENCE WITH VEHICULAR ELECTRONICS Electronic fuel injection, anti-skid braking, and cruise control systems may malfunction due to radio frequency energy from the transceiver. Consult your vehicle dealer if such systems are present.
Note: These instructions are for use by KENWOOD dealers, authorized service facilities, or the factory.
Installation Equipment
CAUTION: Be careful when drilling mounting holes to avoid damaging vehicle wiring. Check screw extension depth before installing.
Required tools include a 6 mm (1/4") or larger electric drill and drills/circle cutters. Specific drill sizes are needed for self-tapping screws: ø4.2 mm (5/32") for ø5 x 16 screws, and ø3.2 mm (1/8") for ø4 x 16 screws.
Planning the Installation
Choose a location convenient for the user, protected from water damage, easy to service, and out of the way of mechanics and passengers. The diagram illustrates the transceiver, power cable, and antenna connection.
Connector types: TK-940/941 uses an N connector (male); TK-840 uses a PL-259 connector.
Power Cable
The power cable has fused red and black leads and a 2-pin plug. Route the leads through the firewall (using an existing hole or drilling one and installing a rubber grommet). Connect the red lead to the positive (+) battery terminal or switched power source, and the black lead to the negative (-) battery terminal. Locate the fuse as close to the battery as possible. Secure surplus cable and ensure enough slack for servicing.
CAUTION: The transceiver operates on 12 volt negative ground systems only. Always check battery polarity and voltage before installation.
Installing the Transceiver
Mount the transceiver so controls are easily reachable. Use the mounting bracket as a template to drill holes. Ensure sufficient clearance at the rear for cable connections. Connect the antenna and power plug before attaching the transceiver to the bracket.
WARNING: Mount securely to prevent dislodging in a collision, especially in station wagons or vans.
Microphone
Mount the microphone hanger for easy access. Ensure the microphone and cable do not interfere with safe vehicle operation. Connect the microphone plug to the transceiver's front connector and place the microphone on the hanger.
Controls and Functions
Front Panel
The front panel features several controls and indicators:
- 1. POWER switch: Turns the transceiver ON or OFF.

- Return the microphone to its hanger when finished.
Placing a Telephone Call
Note: Requires an optional keypad-equipped microphone.
- Select the desired system and group.
- Hold the PTT switch for one second to ensure connection.
- Release PTT and listen for a dial tone.
- Dial using the microphone keypad and wait for a response.
- Press PTT to speak; release to listen. Only one person speaks at a time.

- End the call by pressing the # key.
Conventional Operation
Receiving
- Switch ON the transceiver.
- Set the volume level using the VOLUME Up/Down switches.
- Select the system and group using the SYSTEM and GROUP switches. Toggle Scan ON or OFF if programmed.
- Adjust volume as needed when hearing the other party.
Transmitting
Note: Monitor the channel before transmitting. If the group uses QT or DQT, take the microphone off hook to disable it. Then, if the channel is busy, you will hear the conversation.
- Select the system and group you wish to call.
- Monitor the selected group to ensure it is free before transmitting.
- Press the PTT switch and speak into the microphone (hold 1 to 1.5 inches from mouth). Release PTT to listen.
- Return the microphone to its hanger when finished.
Audible User Feedback Tones
The transceiver uses tones to indicate operating status:
- Busy Tone: Similar to a telephone busy tone. Sounds when system repeaters are busy. Stops when transmission is possible or PTT is released.
- Intercept Tone: Similar to a "high-low" siren. Sounds when out of the service area or a repeater is unreachable. Stops when PTT is released.
- Volume Level Tone: Sounds each time a VOLUME Up/Down switch is pressed. The tone's volume matches the transceiver's volume setting.
- Proceed Tone: A short beep indicating the Clear-to-Talk function is ready for call connection.
System Scan
General
If Scan is programmed, use the SCAN switch to scan systems. The "S" indicator and "- SCAN -" appear on the display. Scanning starts, processing systems not locked out. Scanning stops on a received call; the system and group digits appear. Respond by pressing PTT. Lifting the microphone from its hanger (off hook) typically stops scanning, unless dealer programmed otherwise. Scanning resumes after a time delay if no signal is received.
Scanning Trunked Systems
Scans revert groups and unlocked groups within each system. Refer to GROUP SCAN.
Scanning Conventional Systems
Scans only revert groups (channels) within each system.
Scan Lockout
The AUX switch, if programmed for scan lockout, allows manual lockout of systems from the scan sequence.
Scan Revert
Scan Revert refers to the revert systems and groups being scanned. Two types are programmable by the dealer: Last Call Revert (last received system/group becomes revert) and Last Use Revert (last responded system/group becomes revert).
Group Scan
Available for trunked systems, Group Scan is useful when multiple groups are programmed. It scans allowed groups and revert groups. When a call is received, the group indicator shows the number, and that group becomes the revert group. Press PTT to respond. Lifting the microphone from its hanger (off hook) stops scanning, unless dealer programmed otherwise.
Time-Out Timer
This timer stops continuous transmissions after a set period (15 seconds to 10 minutes, dealer-set). An alert tone sounds if the PTT is held longer than the programmed time; the tone stops when PTT is released.
Horn Alert
If installed by your dealer, this function sounds the vehicle horn or an external alert for specific calls, similar to the CALL indicator. The AUX switch can activate or deactivate Horn Alert; the Auxiliary indicator appears when active.
