TECH EU-L-4X WiFi User Manual

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the TECH EU-L-4X WiFi controller, a device designed for advanced heating and cooling system management.

I. Safety Precautions

WARNING: Always disconnect power before performing any operations. Installation requires qualified personnel. Ensure proper grounding and insulation resistance checks. This device is not intended for use by children.

CAUTION: Protect the controller from atmospheric discharges by unplugging during thunderstorms. Do not use the controller contrary to its intended purpose. Regularly check cable condition and clean the controller.

Environmental responsibility is paramount. The symbol of a crossed-out wheeled bin indicates that the product must not be disposed of with municipal waste. Users are responsible for handing over used equipment to designated collection points for recycling.

II. System Description

The EU-L-4X WiFi controller manages heating devices and supports up to 8 zones (4 radiator, 4 floor heating). It offers wireless and wired RS-485 (TECH SBUS) communication. An optional EU-ML-4X module expands floor zone support by 4. Its primary function is to maintain preset temperatures in each zone, integrating with various peripheral devices like room sensors, regulators, floor sensors, external sensors, window sensors, and thermoelectric actuators.

Key capabilities include:

  • Support for dedicated wired regulators (EU-R-12b, EU-R-12s, EU-F-12b, EU-R-X).
  • Support for wired sensors (EU-C-7p).
  • Support for various wireless regulators and sensors (e.g., EU-R-8X, EU-C-8r, EU-C-mini).
  • Support for floor temperature sensors (EU-C-8f).
  • Support for external sensors and weather controls (EU-C-8zr).
  • Support for wireless window sensors (EU-C-2n).
  • Control of wireless actuators (STT-868, STT-869, EU-G-X).
  • Operation of thermoelectric actuators.
  • Operation of mixing valves via EU-i-1, EU-i-1m modules.
  • Control of heating/cooling via voltage-free contact.
  • A 230V output for pumps.
  • Individual operation schedules per zone.
  • Software updates via USB.

Note: It is recommended to use a maximum of 1 repeater. Updates for system expansion devices are available on www.tech-controllers.com. The controller features a built-in Internet module for remote control via the https://emodul.eu website or the emodul application.

III. Installing the Controller

Installation must be performed by a qualified person.

WARNING: Risk of injury or death from electric shock. Disconnect power before working on the controller and secure it against accidental activation. Incorrect wiring can damage the controller.

Electrolytic Capacitor Installation: A 220uF/25V low impedance electrolytic capacitor can be installed in parallel with the zone sensor cable to reduce temperature spike readings. Polarity must be observed, with the ground (marked with a white strip) connected to the right terminal of the sensor connector. Proper wiring practices are essential to avoid interference; avoid routing wires near electromagnetic fields.

WARNING: If the pump manufacturer requires an external switch or residual current device, do not connect pumps directly to control outputs. Use an additional safety circuit between the regulator and the pump. The ZP-01 pump adapter is recommended.

IV. First Startup

Follow these steps for initial setup:

  1. Connect Devices: Remove the controller cover and connect all devices as per the diagrams and terminal descriptions.
  2. Power On and Check: After connecting all devices, switch on the power supply. Use the Manual mode (Menu → Fitter's Menu → Manual mode) to check individual device operations. Navigate using [Up Arrow] and [Down Arrow] buttons to select a device and press [MENU Button] to activate it.
  3. Set Time and Date: Navigate to Menu → Controller settings → Time settings.

CAUTION: The web module can automatically adjust the current time from the network.

Configuring Sensors and Regulators: To support a zone, the controller needs temperature information from a sensor (wired/wireless). For direct setpoint adjustment, use room regulators (e.g., EU-R-8b). Pair sensors by navigating to Menu → Fitter's Menu → Zones → Zone... → Room sensor → Sensor selection and pressing the sensor's registration button.

Cooperating Devices: The controller supports mixing valve modules (EU-i-1, EU-i-1m) and additional contacts (EU-MW-1). Remote control is available via the emodul.eu application after enabling the Internet module.

CAUTION: Ensure all connected devices are registered.

V. Main Screen Description

Control is managed via buttons next to the display:

  • Controller Display: Shows current status and parameters.
  • [Up Arrow] Button: Navigates menu functions, increases parameter values, and switches operation parameters between zones.
  • [Down Arrow] Button: Navigates menu functions, decreases parameter values, and switches operation parameters between zones.
  • [MENU Button]: Enters the controller menu and confirms settings.
  • [EXIT Button]: Exits menus, cancels settings, or toggles screen views.

Sample Screens - ZONES: Displays current day, outside temperature, pump status, activated potential-free contact, current time, active bypass function, operation mode/schedule, sensor signal strength/battery status, preset temperature, current floor temperature, current zone temperature, and zone information (sensor presence, heating/cooling status, alarms).

VI. Controller Functions

1. Operation Mode

Selectable modes include:

  • Normal Mode: Preset temperature follows the set schedule.
  • Holiday Mode: Preset temperature is set according to holiday mode parameters. (Menu → Fitter's menu → Zones → Zone... → Settings → Temperature settings → Holiday mode)
  • Economy Mode: Preset temperature is set according to economy mode parameters. (Menu → Fitter's menu → Zones → Zone... → Settings → Temperature settings → Economy mode)
  • Comfort Mode: Preset temperature is set according to comfort mode parameters. (Menu → Fitter's menu → Zones → Zone... → Settings → Temperature settings → Comfort mode)

CAUTION: Changing to Holiday, Economy, or Comfort mode applies to all zones. In these modes, only the setpoint temperature for the selected mode can be changed per zone. Other modes do not allow setpoint changes at the room regulator level.

2. Zones

Zones can be displayed as active by registering a sensor. This function also allows disabling a zone and hiding its parameters.

Set Temperature: Determined by the selected operation mode or weekly schedule. A bypass function allows setting a separate temperature and duration, after which the zone reverts to its previous mode.

CAUTION: Setting duration to 'CON' means constant temperature indefinitely.

Operation Mode: Users can view and change zone operation modes:

  • Local Schedule: For zone-specific scheduling.
  • Global Schedule 1-5: For scheduling across all active zones.
  • Constant Temperature (CON): Sets a permanent temperature value.
  • Time Limit: Sets a temperature valid for a specific period, after which the previous mode resumes.

Schedule Editing: Allows configuration of daily temperature schedules via Menu → Zones → Zone... → Operation mode → Schedule... → Edit. Users can define temperature settings for specific time intervals and days of the week.

CAUTION: Up to three time intervals can be set per schedule with 15-minute accuracy.

3. Controller Settings

  • Time settings: Automatic network time/date download or manual setting.
  • Screen settings: Display customization.
  • Sound the buttons: Enable/disable button press sound.

4. Fitter's Menu

Provides access to advanced controller functions.

4.1. Zones

Activate zones by registering sensors.

4.1.1. Room Sensor

Supports NTC wired, RS, or wireless sensors. Hysteresis adds tolerance (0.1-5°C) for heating/cooling activation. Calibration allows adjustment of sensor readings (-10°C to +10°C).

4.1.2. Set Temperature

Described in the Menu → Zones section.

4.1.3. Operation Mode

Described in the Menu → Zones section.

4.1.4. Outputs Configuration

Controls outputs for floor heating pump, potential-free contact, and sensors 1-4. Sensor outputs 1-4 are assigned to zones 1-4 respectively. Allows switching off pumps and contacts in specific zones.

4.1.5. Settings

  • Weather control: Enables/disables weather-based control. Requires an external sensor and enabling the option in Menu → Fitter's menu → External sensor.
  • Heating: Enables/disables heating and allows schedule/constant temperature selection.
  • Cooling: Enables/disables cooling and allows schedule/constant temperature selection.
  • Temperature settings: Configures temperatures for Holiday, Economy, and Comfort modes.

Optimum Start: An intelligent system that monitors heating and activates it in advance to reach set temperatures precisely. It automatically adjusts activation times based on installation changes for optimal efficiency.

4.1.6. Actuators

SIGMA function: Enables seamless control of electric actuators, allowing setting of minimum/maximum valve openings and a 'Range' parameter for temperature-based valve control.

CAUTION: Sigma function is available for STT-868 or STT-869 actuators only.

Example Settings: Zone preset temperature 23°C, Min opening 30%, Max opening 90%, Range 5°C, Hysteresis 2°C. The actuator closes at 18°C (23°C - 5°C range) and opens at 21°C (23°C - 2°C hysteresis).

  • Protection: If set temperature is exceeded by the 'Range' value, actuators close (0% opening). Works with SIGMA.
  • Emergency Mode: Allows manual actuator adjustment during alarms (e.g., sensor failure).
  • Actuators 1-6: Register wireless actuators by pressing their communication button. View parameters and delete actuators.

4.1.7. Window Sensors

  • ON: Enables window sensor activation for a zone.
  • Delay Time: Sets a delay before the controller reacts to a window opening (e.g., stops heating/cooling). If the window remains open after the delay, actuators close and overheating is prevented.
  • CAUTION: A delay time of 0 transmits the close signal immediately.
  • Wireless: Register wireless window sensors (1-6 per zone). View parameters and delete sensors.

4.1.8. Floor Heating

  • Floor Sensor: Sensor Selection (wired/wireless), Hysteresis (0.1-5°C tolerance), Calibration (-10°C to +10°C).
  • CAUTION: Floor sensor is not used in cooling mode.
  • Operation mode: OFF, Floor Protection (keeps floor temp below max), Comfort mode (maintains comfortable floor temp).
  • Min. temperature: Sets minimum floor temp to prevent cooling; reheat activates when temp drops below this. Available only in Comfort Mode.
  • Max. temperature: Sets maximum floor temp threshold to prevent overheating; heating switches off if this is reached.

4.2. Additional Contacts

Register additional contacts (1-6 pcs.). Functions include Information, ON/OFF control, Operation mode, Time mode, and Constant mode. Relays operate based on assigned zones. Dehumidification activates if maximum humidity is exceeded (Cooling mode only). Schedule settings allow custom contact operation schedules.

4.3. Mixing Valve

Operates additional valves via modules like EU-i-1m. Requires registration. Functions include Information, Register, Manual mode (valve/pump control), Version, Valve removal, ON/OFF, and Valve set temperature.

Mixing Valve Parameters:

  • Summer mode: Closes valve to prevent heating; opens in emergency if boiler temp is too high.
  • Calibration: Sets valve to a safe position (fully open for CH/Return, closed for Floor/Cooling).
  • Single stroke: Maximum valve movement per sampling.
  • Minimum opening: Smallest valve opening percentage to maintain minimum flow.
  • CAUTION: If minimum opening is 0%, the pump will not operate when the valve is closed.
  • Opening time: Time for the valve actuator to open from 0% to 100%.
  • Measurement pause: Frequency of water temperature measurement.
  • Valve Hysteresis: Temperature difference for valve start/stop (e.g., 50°C setpoint, 2°C hysteresis means valve stops at 50°C, opens at 48°C, closes at 52°C).
  • Valve type: CH valve, Floor valve (protects floor from overheating), Return protection (protects boiler from cold return).

CAUTION: Boiler Protection must be configured to prevent boiler overheating if CH temperature affects valve opening.

  • Cooling: Controls cooling system temperature.
  • Opening in CH calibration: Calibrates valve from opening phase (CH Valve type only).
  • Floor heating - summer: Activates summer mode for floor valves.
  • Weather control: Requires external sensor placement away from atmospheric influences. Not available in Cooling/Return Protection modes.
  • Heating curve: Sets temperature based on external temperature.

Room Regulator:

  • Controller type: Without regulator, RS regulator decrease, RS regulator proportional, Standard room regulator.
  • Parameters: Room reg. temp. lower, Room temperature difference, Change of pre-set temperature.
  • Room regulator function: Sets valve action (Closing or Lowering temperature).
  • Proportionality coefficient: Determines valve stroke precision.
  • Maximum floor temperature: Prevents floor overheating.
  • Opening direction: Sets valve opening direction (Right/Left).
  • Sensor Selection: Uses valve module sensors or main controller sensors.
  • CH sensor selection: Uses valve module CH sensor or main controller CH sensor.
  • Boiler protection: Prevents dangerous boiler temperature increase.
  • Return protection: Protects boiler from cold return water.

4.4. Internet Module

Enables remote control via emodul.eu. Requires network connection with DHCP server and open port 2000. Configuration involves setting IP address, WIFI selection, and password.

4.5. Manual Mode

Allows manual control of devices like pumps, contacts, and actuators. Recommended for initial setup checks.

4.6. External Sensor

Used for weather control. Requires EU-C-8zr sensor registration. Supports calibration.

4.7. Heating Stopping

Prevents actuator activation during specified intervals. Includes Date settings for heating deactivation/activation and Weather control functionality.

4.8. Potential-Free Contact

Activates upon delay when zones haven't reached set temperatures. Deactivates when set temperature is met. Includes Operation delay setting.

4.9. Pump

Controls pump operation, switching on when zones are underheated or floor pump is enabled. Switches off when all zones are heated. Includes Operation delay setting.

4.10. Heating - Cooling

Selectable modes: Heating (all zones), Cooling (all zones), or Automatic (switches based on input).

4.11. Anti-Stop Settings

Forces pump and valve operation to prevent scale during inactivity, typically outside the heating season.

4.12. Maximum Humidity

Disengages cooling if humidity exceeds the set maximum. Active only in Cooling mode with a registered humidity sensor.

4.13. Language

Allows changing the controller's language version.

4.14. Heat Pump

Dedicated mode for heat pump installations. Features include Energy saving mode, Minimum pause time (extends compressor life), and Bypass option for systems without a buffer.

4.15. Factory Settings

Resets the controller to manufacturer-saved settings.

5. Service Menu

Accessible only to authorized personnel with a proprietary code.

6. Factory Settings

Returns the controller to default manufacturer settings.

7. Software Version

Displays manufacturer logo and software version number. Required for contacting service.

VII. Software Upgrade

To upgrade software: disconnect controller, insert USB drive with new software, reconnect controller while holding the [EXIT Button] until a beep. The controller will restart upon completion.

CAUTION: Software upgrade must be performed by a qualified installer. Previous settings cannot be restored. Do not turn off the controller during the update.
