Danfoss ERC 21X Intelligent Multifunctional Refrigeration Controller

User Manual

Introduction

The ERC 21X is an intelligent, multifunctional controller designed for modern refrigeration systems in commercial environments. It is suitable for controlling high, medium, and low-temperature display cases and cabinets with natural, electric, or hot gas defrost. Typical applications include display cases, commercial refrigerators and freezers, and cold rooms.

The ERC 21X features a four-button interface, a large display, and an intuitive menu structure for ease of use. It incorporates energy-saving functions such as intelligent evaporator fan control, day/night mode, and demand-based defrosting. Its high-capacity 16A relay allows direct connection of large loads, supporting compressors up to 2 HP depending on power factor and motor efficiency.

The controller offers flexibility with a wide range of compatible sensor types and screw terminals for installation. Safety features include voltage protection and protection against high condensing temperatures.

ERC 21X Series Overview

The ERC 21X series is available in three versions:

Key Features and Functions

Voltage Protection: Limits compressor operation within specified voltage ranges, disconnecting the compressor if voltage exceeds these limits.

Compressor Protection: Includes parameters for minimum run time and stop time to prevent short-cycling.

Protection Against High Condensing Temperature: Monitors condensing temperature and activates alarms or shuts down the compressor if it exceeds set limits.

Pre-defined Applications: Simplifies controller setup by offering pre-configured application settings based on storage temperature, defrost type, and defrost method.

Pulse Fan Operation: Saves energy by activating the fan during compressor off-cycles to maintain temperature.

Demand Defrost: Optimizes defrost cycles based on actual conditions, rather than fixed timers.

Installation

Dimensions: The controller has specific dimensions for panel mounting.

Mounting: The controller is designed for panel mounting with rear-side fastening using clips.

Installation Instructions: Ensure proper sealing and secure mounting. Avoid installing in areas with excessive dust or moisture.

Electrical Connections: Wiring diagrams are provided for ERC 211, ERC 213, and ERC 214 models, detailing connections for power supply, sensors, and outputs.

Menu Navigation and Operation

Key Functions: The controller features buttons for navigation (Up, Down, Set, Back) and special functions (Defrost, Pull Down, Factory Reset).

Quick Setup: Upon initial power-up, a quick setup wizard guides the user through selecting a pre-defined application.

Menu Structure: The menu is organized into parameter groups, allowing access to configuration, settings, and monitoring functions.

Parameter Tables: Detailed tables list all available parameters with their codes, descriptions, ranges, and default values for different applications.

Troubleshooting

Alarm Codes: A table lists various alarm codes and their corresponding causes and recommended actions.

Troubleshooting Guide: Provides a systematic approach to identifying and resolving common issues, such as the compressor not starting or incorrect temperature readings.

Ordering Information

Product Codes: Specific product codes are provided for different ERC 21X models, including variations in voltage, number of sensors, and packaging.

Sensors: Compatible Danfoss sensors (EKS series, AKS series) are listed with their specifications and part numbers.

Accessories: Includes information on programming tools like the EKA 183B.

Technical Specifications

Power Supply: 115 VAC / 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz.

Inputs: Supports various sensor types (NTC, PTC, Pt1000) and digital inputs.

Outputs: Multiple relay outputs for compressor, defrost, fan, and alarm control.

Display: 3-digit LED display with °C/°F indication.

Operating Conditions: Temperature range and humidity specifications.

Storage Conditions: Temperature range and humidity specifications.

Protection: IP65 front, IP00 rear, pollution degree II.

Certifications: Compliance with various safety and EMC standards (UL, ENEC, CQC, CE, EAC, NSF, RoHS).
