Stacking (Water comes out of the showerhead during tub fill mode) | Choice of pipe/distance between valve and showerhead less than 46"/multiple elbows/anything restricting flow of water exiting valve | Water comes out of spout and showerhead at the same time | Remove tub spout and flush out debris - Replace undersized line or fittings. |
Restricted temperature range | Flow restriction | Water flow from spout | Remove tub spout and flush out debris - Replace undersized line or fittings. |
Not able to install handle/handle rubs up against escutcheon | Valve installed upside down | Valve installed upside down | Remove valve and reinstall in the proper orientation. |
Handle is hard to turn | Cartridge stem is difficult to rotate | Difficult movement from handle | Remove handle, rotate 180°, re-install. Position temperature limit stop to desired temperature position. |

Rough-in Plumbing Variations
This section details how to determine the existing rough-in plumbing installation for Copper, PEX, IPS (Galvanized Iron Pipe/Threaded Connections), and CPVC, providing helpful tools for each type.
Copper: Visuals of front and back views of copper plumbing connections with a list of recommended tools.
PEX: Visuals of front and back views of PEX plumbing connections with a list of recommended tools.
IPS – (Galvanized Iron Pipe/Threaded Connections): Visuals of front and back views of IPS plumbing connections with a list of recommended tools.
CPVC: Visuals of front and back views of CPVC plumbing connections with a list of recommended tools.
Caution: Always turn off hot and cold water supplies before removing or disassembling the faucet or valve. Open the faucet handle to relieve pressure and ensure complete water shut-off.
Installation Schematics
Diagrams illustrating measurements for ideal tub/shower performance, including:
- 2.1 Tub/Shower: Shows valve body placement relative to the tub floor, shower arm height, and tub spout placement.
- 2.2 Shower Only: Shows valve body placement relative to the shower stall floor and shower arm height.
3. Installing Your Valve
Moen provides a plaster ground attached to the valve for installation and alignment. The plaster ground can be configured to accommodate various installation needs and protect the valve from construction damage.
3.1 Thin Wall Installation:
For walls less than 1/4" thick. Involves drilling a hole for valve access, centering the plaster ground/valve assembly, attaching water connections, and breaking off the plaster ground cap.
3.1 Thick Wall Installation:
For walls greater than 1/4" thick. Involves drilling a larger hole for support, positioning the plaster ground flush with the finished wall, securing the valve, attaching water connections, and removing the plaster ground.
3.2 Escutcheon Installation:
Ensures the cartridge clip is installed prior to escutcheon installation. For thin wall installations, the wall is trapped between the plaster ground and trim. For thick wall installations, the plaster ground can be discarded. Instructions for securing the escutcheon to the wall.
Special Instructions for Shallow Wall Cavity Installations
This section provides guidance for installations where the wall cavity restricts valve placement. It details how to reconfigure the plaster ground/valve assembly for shallow wall cavities.

5. Setting The Temperature Limit Stop and Finishing Your Tub/Shower Installation
- 5.1: Turn on water supply to check for leaks and set the temperature limit stop.
- 5.2: Rotate the lever counterclockwise to the desired temperature (max 120°F/49°C). If temperature exceeds 120°F, proceed to 5.3. If less than 120°F, proceed to 5.5.
- 5.3: Remove lever and adapter, note stop position, and adjust the temperature limit stop.
- 5.4: Reattach the lever handle adapter, adapter screw, and lever, ensuring correct alignment.
- 5.5: Insert and tighten the adapter screw into the lever using the hex wrench.
