Using Audacity
Launching and Connecting
Audacity should start automatically. If not, double-click the Audacity icon on your desktop. If the icon is missing, navigate to 'C:\Program Files\Audacity' in 'My Computer', right-click the 'orange ball wearing Headphones' icon, and select 'Send to' > 'Desktop (create shortcut)'.
Plug the USB cable from the turntable into a spare USB port on your computer.
Setting Recording Preferences
Before recording, go to 'Edit' > 'Preferences'. In the 'Recording' section, open the 'Device' menu and select 'USB PnP Audio Device'. Tick the box for 'Software Playthrough (Play new track while recording it)'. Set the 'Channels' to '2 (Stereo)' and click 'OK'.
Recording to Computer
Start the record playing and press the Record button [record-button] in Audacity to begin recording to your computer.
Use the transport controls (Pause, Play, Stop, Go to Start, Go to End) to manage playback and recording.
Use the File, Edit, View, Project, Generate, Effect, and Analyse menus to Save, Export, and Manipulate your music.
Adjusting Recording Level
To adjust the recording level, click 'START' > 'SETTINGS' > 'Control Panel'. Navigate to 'SOUNDS and AUDIO DEVICES', select the 'VOLUME' tab, and then 'ADVANCED'. In the Master volume window, click 'properties' in the top left corner. In the Properties window, select "USB PnP Audio Device" from the dropdown menu and click "OK". A control will appear to adjust the recording level (increase if too quiet, decrease if too loud).
Ensure the waveform peaks in Audacity do not touch the top or bottom of the window.
Editing Waveforms
To edit your music, the waveform needs to be highlighted. Click on the left side of the waveform (under L+R controls) with the left mouse button; the waveform will darken. The entire waveform can be edited, or a section can be highlighted by dragging the mouse over the desired area. Alternatively, use the 'EDIT' menu > 'SELECT' and choose 'All', 'Start to Cursor', or 'Cursor to end'.
Note: After recording, you may need to remove the USB cable to enable playback from the computer.
Exporting Music Files
Exporting as WAV
Once recorded and edited, go to 'File' > 'Export as WAV'. Enter a file name and choose a save location.
Exporting as MP3
To export as MP3, go to 'File' > 'Export as Mp3'. Enter a file name and choose a save location.
Note for MP3 Export: To enable MP3 export, copy the file 'lame_enc.dll' from the installation CD into the AUDACITY folder on your hard drive. The software will then detect it.
