Compatibility Check for Rigid & Folding Wheelchairs

This guide provides essential information to ensure the compatibility of the Sunrise Medical Empulse R90 power-assist device with your rigid or folding wheelchair. The Empulse R90 is designed for wheelchairs featuring integrated or removable footrests. Please follow the compatibility check guidance below. An extended check is required for folding wheelchairs.

6-Step Compatibility Check

1 - Combination Agreement

Please verify if the specific combination of the Empulse R90 and your wheelchair model has been approved. A comprehensive combination overview is available on the Sunrise Medical website: www.sunrisemedical.eu.

2 - Back Wheel Size

The Empulse R90 is compatible with wheelchairs having the following back wheel sizes:

24 inches
25 inches
26 inches

Please select your back wheel size when placing your order.

3 - Camber

The Empulse R90 is compatible with wheelchairs featuring the following camber angles:

Important: The Empulse R90 is compatible only with rigid wheelchairs that have a straight axle. If the axle is not straight and has a "V" shape, the R90 is not compatible.

4 - Rear Seat Height and Center of Gravity (COG)

To ensure compatibility, check your wheelchair's combination of COG and back seat height using the matrix below. Double-check this by measuring the distance from the seat sling to the center of the axle.

*Disclaimer: Please note that the availability of specific wheel sizes may vary by region.

For an accurate measurement, you can also measure the distance from the middle of the axle to the seat sling of your wheelchair. This measured distance must fall within the specified ranges:

For COG less than or equal to 3 inches (76 mm): A minimum gap of 2.75 inches (70 mm) from the center axle to the seat sling is required.
For COG greater than 3 inches (76 mm): A minimum gap of 4.63 inches (118 mm) from the center axle to the seat sling is required.

5 - General No-Go Conditions

The Empulse R90 is not compatible with wheelchairs equipped with any of the following features:

Rear Suspension
4 Link Suspension
One Arm Drive

Additionally, ensure there is sufficient space (at least 30 mm) on the front frame of the wheelchair to securely attach the R90 control box mounting bracket.

6 - Recommendations for Optimal Performance

The following items do not constitute a "Go" or "NoGo" condition but are recommended for optimal device performance and to avoid limitations:

3-inch and 4-inch castor wheels should not be combined with the Empulse R90.
It is recommended to use anti-tip devices on the wheelchair when combined with the Empulse R90.

Extended Compatibility Check for Folding Wheelchairs Only

This section details specific compatibility checks required exclusively for folding wheelchairs.

6 - Folding Wheelchair Width

For folding wheelchair frames, measure the distance from the inside axle plate to the inside axle plate. Select the correct size of folding axle on the order form based on these measurements. If the measured distance falls outside the minimum to maximum ranges specified in the table below, the Empulse R90 is not compatible with this specific wheelchair (NoGo).

6 - Folding Wheelchair Axle Plate Size

For folding wheelchair frames, measure the axle plate width as shown in the diagram below. Choose the correct bracket size on the order form. If the measured distance falls outside the minimum to maximum ranges specified in the table below, the Empulse R90 is not compatible with this specific wheelchair (NoGo).
