Preparing your lawn for the Robot Mower

The mower requires a full and complete perimeter loop to operate. This loop carries a weak electrical signal that the mower uses to determine its location in the garden.

Perimeter Layout Requirements:

  • Minimum 30cm clearance from obstacles/edges at the rear of the charging station.
  • Minimum 2m clearance at the front of the charging station.
  • Minimum 1.2m clearance from obstacles around the charging station.
  • Minimum 30cm clearance from obstacles on side paths.
  • Minimum 1.5cm clearance from obstacles around the main mowing area.
  • The boundary wire must be laid in a continuous loop.
  • Wire Laying Angles:
    • Obtuse angles are acceptable.
    • Curves are acceptable.
    • Wires must not cross.
    • Right angles are not recommended.
    • Acute angles are not recommended.

A printable ruler is provided with the carton to help measure 35cm around your garden.

Rectifying or avoiding problem areas

Obstacles such as tree roots on lawn

  • If a tree root protrudes into the cutting area, it can be a problem.
  • Solution 1: Reroute the perimeter around the tree root, leaving the area unmowed.
  • Solution 2: Cut the tree root back with a saw, fill any uneven surface with soil, and then lay the perimeter wire over it.

Excessively uneven areas of lawn

  • Deep dips in the lawn surface can cause the mower's wheels to lose grip and skid.
  • Solution 1: Fill dips with soil, compact it, and re-seed with grass.
  • Solution 2: If the uneven area is on the perimeter line, it can be pegged out as normal. If within the mowing area, it should no longer be a problem after filling.

If the mower encounters particularly long grass, it may treat it as an obstacle. The grass needs to be at a reasonable level before MoeBot can function correctly.

Installing the charging station

Ensure a minimum of 2m straight perimeter from the front of the charging station and 30cm straight from the rear.

Find a location with access to power, ensuring the mower can leave the charging station in an anti-clockwise direction. Do not peg the plate down yet.

The location must be within 5m of a safe power source (e.g., a weatherproof outdoor electrical socket or an indoor power point in a garage).

The charging station should be flat and secure, without risk of movement. Placement next to an unstable border edge can cause it to slump, leading to unevenness and charging problems.

WARNING: Trailing wires are a trip hazard. Take care when choosing your location.

  • The boundary wire goes into the front (1) of the charging station and comes out at the back (2).
  • Push the boundary wire into the tube at the front (1) of the charging station.
  • It will emerge at the rear of the unit (2).
  • You will need to strip the plastic sheath from the end of the wire before connecting. Twisting the exposed wires helps ensure a good connection.
  • The charging station has a hood at the back that hinges forwards. Push the charging station hood forward to uncover the wiring terminals.
  • The sprung terminal will need lifting to expose the hole; ensure the wire is fully inserted before releasing the red terminal clip.
  • When the boundary wire is completed, it must return to the charging station, be fed up through the unit, and plugged into the black terminal.
  • Feed the power lead up through the other side of the base station.
  • Pay attention to the cable fittings for correct connection, as there is a keyway orientation detail.
  • Push the power cable into place.
  • Screw on the outer ring to secure the cable and prevent water ingress.
  • Once wired, the base station can be secured with the four provided screws using the allen key. Ensure they are fully inserted and flush with the base to avoid hindering the mower's location.
  • Making sure the power is switched off, screw the two charging rods into the holes below the cover of the base station. The LED status indicator is situated here.

Laying the boundary wire

Keep the wire straight for at least the first 2m to allow the mower to return to the charging stand with ease.

Place pegs at intervals of about 1m on straight, even ground, and 30cm to 50cm on bends and corners. Uneven ground and obstacles will require more pegs.

The perimeter wire must be kept tight. If it is loose, it may be cut by the mower. If the wire passes over a moderate dip in the lawn, more pegs will be required to keep it firmly pegged at ground level, or it risks being cut.

Operating the mower

Place the mower on the base station with the wheels on the grips and the two pins engaged into the front of the mower. The mower requires charging to at least 70% capacity before it will leave its station.

Press the STOP button.

This action flips open the control panel and LCD display cover.

Hold the power button down for three seconds to activate the LCD display.

Control panel

The control panel displays: Time, date, battery status. Buttons include: Power button (on/off, disabling device), START button (start mowing), HOME button (back to station), Status, RETURN button, OK/MENU button, UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT buttons (for navigation and PIN code entry A, B, C, D), and STOP button (emergency stop and control panel hatch).

Cutting height adjustment

  1. Open the knob lid.
  2. Cutting height can be adjusted from 2.5cm to 5.5cm by rotating the adjustment knob.

Getting started

Set the cutting height

For the first cut of the season or for long, thick, wet grass, use the highest setting (5.5cm). Gradually reduce to the desired height once all ground is covered. This may take a few days or weeks. If the perimeter wire is pegged to the surface, let it "bed in" to the lawn; keep the mower on an elevated blade setting during this time. In the first few days of mowing, the grass may appear stripy or patchy, which is normal and will even out after several days.

First time out

The control panel will ask for a pass code. The default PIN is AAAA.

Pressing the start button and closing the flap will cause the mower to start a perimeter circuit, after which it will begin randomly mowing the lawn.

The first few mows may appear random and unfinished, which is normal. With multiple passes, the pattern will even out. Using zoning and spiral spot mowing can achieve desirable effects more quickly.

New season mowing

Between mowing seasons, when the mower is not operating (during winter months), the grass can become unkempt. Review mowing passes and address any problem areas during new season setup.

Repairing the boundary wire

If the boundary wire gets cut or breaks (indicated by a solid red light on the charging station), locate and repair it using a splicing clip. First, take up slack in the wire to create overlap.

The clip has two channels. Push one end of the wire into one channel and the other end into the other. The wire needs to go in fully and can even protrude from the other end.

Using pliers, crimp the metal tab onto the inserted wires to form a connection.

When the boundary wire is repaired, the charging station will display a solid blue light. If the light remains red, there are more breaks in the loop that need locating and repairing.

Replacing the blades

  1. Power on/off (Disabling device).
  2. Wear protective gloves.
  3. Turn the mower upside-down.
  4. Place the blade over the raised screw-hole.
  5. Use a second screwdriver to anchor the blade plate while attaching the blade.
  6. Using a cross-head screwdriver, secure the blade on the blade plate. The blade should rotate freely once fitted.
  7. Repeat for other blades.

Re-orientate the blade (turn it around or upside down) as each corner wears out. If all four quarters have been used, replace the blade.

Carry the mower by the handle between the two rear wheels with the blades pointing outwards.

Wheel spinning faults (mower stops in one spot, wheels spin) can occur on uneven or wet ground. Solution: Add soil to level the ground, ensure good drainage, and avoid mowing during heavy rain or water logging.

If boundary wires are in the wrong connectors (signal is clockwise instead of counter-clockwise), the mower may attempt to go outside the perimeter. If it leaves the area constantly, swap the wires at the charging station (e.g., move the red connector wire to the black terminal and vice versa).

Maintenance

  1. Check and clean the mower regularly once a week.
  2. When first using the mower, check the blade plate, protection plate, and blades monthly.
  3. Ensure blades and blade plate rotate easily.
  4. Blade edges should not be damaged. Blade life depends on grass type, soil, etc.
  5. Working with dull blades results in poor mowing and requires more power, covering a smaller area.
  6. Charge the battery fully at the end of the season before winter storage. If storage exceeds one year, recharge before use.

Winter storage

  1. Clean the mower carefully before winter storage and charge the battery fully.
  2. Store the mower in its station in a dry area, protected from frost, preferably in original packaging.
  3. Boundary wire can be left in the lawn. Protect the wire end from moisture with electrical tape after removing the charging station.

After winter storage

  1. Check the mower, boundary wire, and charging rods for cleanliness. If charging strips appear rusty, clean them with an emery cloth or suitable abrasive cloth. Check that the mower's time and date settings are correct.
  2. Check if the blades need changing.
  3. Check if the blades and blade plate turn easily.

Product Care

WARNING: Wear protective gloves when handling, cleaning, or replacing the blade. Ensure the safety key is removed when the mower is not in use, being transported, handled, or stored, to reduce the risk of injury.
