BMW High On-Board Computer Retrofit Installation Instructions

Important Information

These instructions are intended for BMW dealership organizations and authorized BMW service companies. Installation should be performed by specialist personnel trained on BMW cars with appropriate knowledge. Work must be completed using the latest BMW repair manuals, circuit diagrams, servicing manuals, and work instructions, employing prescribed tools and observing health and safety regulations. Ensure cables/lines are not kinked or damaged. Additional cables must be secured with cable ties. Figures show Left-Hand Drive (LHD) cars; proceed similarly for Right-Hand Drive (RHD) cars.

Ordering Instructions

The instrument cluster and coolant level switch are not included in the retrofit kit and must be ordered separately (refer to EPC for part numbers). For cars with an M51 engine built before 01/99, the expansion tank must be replaced (refer to EPC for part numbers).

The retrofit kit includes the following components:

Preparations

Before installation, perform the following:

• Conduct a brief test.
• Disconnect the negative pole of the battery.

The following components must be removed first:

• Instrument cluster
• Pedal trim
• Footwell trim on the right
• Glove compartment
• Engine compartment protection tray (for cars with an N57 engine only)
• Coolant expansion tank (for E39 cars with M51 engines built before 01/99 only)
• Electrics box cover
• Microfilter (for E39 cars only)

Connection Diagram and Installation

General Connection Overview

The connection diagram illustrates the routing of wiring harnesses (A, B) and their connection points. Key connection points include the instrument cluster (F), joint connectors behind the glove compartment, and the gong in the driver's footwell. Specific branches connect to various socket casings (e.g., X16, X10113, X10114, X11175, X11176) and plugs.

Installation and Cabling for M51, M52, and M54 Engines

This diagram shows a top-down view of the vehicle indicating the routing of connection cables (A, B) from the engine bay to the instrument cluster (F) and coolant level switch (G). It highlights connection points such as the Lamp Control Module (1), Joint Connector X939 (2), Joint Connector X219 (3), Gong (4), and Earth Post Connection X166 (5).

Installation and Cabling for M57 Engine

Similar to the above, this diagram illustrates the routing for M57 engines. Connection cables (A, B) are routed to the instrument cluster (F) and coolant level switch (G). Key connection points include the Lamp Control Module (1), Joint Connector X939 (2), Joint Connector X219 (3), Gong (4), and Earth Post X165 (5).

Connecting the Connection Cable

General Steps:

• Connect branches A1-A3 to the corresponding colored cables on the instrument cluster (F).
• Connect branches A4 and A5 to the matching colored socket casings X11175 and X11176 on the standard wiring harness.
• Route branch A8 into the driver's footwell and connect it to the gong (labeled '1' in diagrams).

E53 Specific Steps:

• Route branches A6 and A7 to the joint connector box (labeled '1' in diagrams).
• Release joint connector X939 (containing WS/RT/GE and WS/GR/GE cables) from the joint connector box.
• Disconnect WS/GR/GE cables from joint connector X939 and connect them with branch A7 to joint connector C.
• Connect joint connector C to casing D and then to the joint connector box.

E39 Specific Steps:

• Route branches A6 and A7 to the joint connector box (labeled '1' in diagrams).
• Release joint connector X939 (WS/GR/GE cable) and joint connector X10116 (WS/RT/GE cable) from the joint connector box.
• Disconnect the cable (labeled '2' in diagrams) between joint connector X939 and joint connector X10116.
• Connect branch A7 to joint connector X939 (WS/GR/GE cable).
• Connect joint connector X939 to the joint connector box.

All Cars:

• Release joint connector X219 from the joint connector box (labeled '1' in diagrams).
• Connect branch A6 to joint connector X219.
• If joint connector X219 is fully occupied, connect branch A6 using insulation-piercing connectors (labeled 'E' in diagrams).

Installing and Connecting the Coolant Level Switch

Important Note: The expansion tank must be replaced on cars with M51 engines built before 01/99.

• Connect branch B1 to the coolant level sensor G.
• Install the coolant level sensor G on the expansion tank.

For Cars with M57 Engine Only:

• Route branch B2 to earth post X165 in the engine compartment and secure it.

For Cars with M51, M52, and M54 Engines Only:

• Route branch B2 to earth post X166 in the engine compartment and secure it.

General Routing:

• Route branch B3 through the grommets (labeled '1' and '2' in diagrams) into the interior.
• Route branch B3 to the lamp control module and connect it to the 54-pin SW plug X10117, Pin 24.

Concluding Work

This retrofit system requires coding. The final steps are:

• Connect the battery.
• Code the retrofit using DISPlus or GT-1 via path Retrofit.
• Conduct a brief test.
• Conduct a function test.
• Re-assemble the car.

Circuit Diagram

The circuit diagram provides a detailed schematic of the electrical connections for the retrofit. It illustrates the interconnections between various connectors, such as X16 (SW 18-pin plug), X112 (SW 2-pin plug), X165/X166 (Terminal 31 cable eyelets), X217 (Terminal 31 joint connector contact), X518 (SW 4-pin plug), X939 (I bus joint connector contact), X1091 (Terminal 31 connector), X10113 (WS 18-pin plug), X10114 (BL 26-pin plug), X10117 (SW 54-pin plug), X10154 (Terminal 30 connector), X11175 (SW 26-pin plug), X11176 (WS 26-pin plug), and X14174 (Terminal 15 connector). The diagram also lists cable colors (e.g., BL-Blue, BR-Brown, GE-Yellow, GN-Green, GR-Grey, RT-Red, SW-Black, VI-Violet, WS-White) and their corresponding wire gauges and functions.
