Safety Information
⚠️ Important Safety Warnings
Please follow all safety instructions for the safe use of the appliance:
- Before using the appliance, read this user manual carefully.
- Never immerse the appliance in water.
- Failure to observe these warnings may result in death, fire, or electric shock.
- If the plug or power cord is damaged, have them replaced exclusively by authorized technical assistance to avoid any risk.
- Turn off the appliance immediately after use.
- Always unplug the appliance from the power outlet before assembling and disassembling components, and before cleaning.
- Remove the plug from the power outlet before cleaning in case of a malfunction.
- Allow the appliance to cool down before cleaning.
- Do not use the appliance without water in the reservoir. Use cold water, preferably filtered. Do not use other liquids.
- Ensure the lid is properly closed.
- ? Risk of burns! Do not open the lid during coffee preparation.
- ? Risk of burns! Do not touch hot surfaces with your hands; use the handles and buttons.
- ? Risk of burns! The warming plate under the carafe remains hot for a few minutes after brewing; do not touch it.
- Do not use the appliance or its parts in combination with parts or accessories from other manufacturers.
- Use only original manufacturer spare parts. Using spare parts not recommended by the manufacturer could cause fires, electric shocks, or personal injury.
- Place the appliance only on flat, dry surfaces.
- Avoid wetting or splashing liquids onto the appliance. In case of contact with liquids, immediately unplug the power cord and dry thoroughly: ⚡ Risk of electric shock!
- Do not place the appliance near taps or sinks.
- Do not use aggressive detergents or sharp objects to clean the filter coffee maker.
- Do not modify the appliance.
- Never attempt to extinguish a flame/fire with water: turn off the appliance, unplug it, and cover the flame with a lid or fire blanket.
- Ensure the power cord does not come into contact with sharp edges.
- Do not place the appliance on or near lit gas or electric burners, inside an oven, or near heat sources.
- Ensure the carafe lid is securely closed before pouring coffee.
- Do not place the carafe on a cooking plate, in a conventional oven, or in a microwave oven.
- Do not place a hot carafe on a cold or wet surface.
- Do not use the carafe if it is damaged or if the handle is loose.
- Fill the water reservoir before plugging the appliance into the electrical outlet.
- Do not install the appliance in environments with temperatures at or below 0°C.
- This appliance can be used by children aged 8 years and above if they are supervised or have received instructions concerning the safe use of the appliance and are aware of the associated dangers. Cleaning and user maintenance operations must not be carried out by children unless they are older than 8 years and supervised. Keep the appliance and its cord out of reach of children under 8 years.
- Appliances can be used by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, provided they are supervised or have received instructions concerning the safe use of the appliance and understand the dangers involved.
- Children must not use the appliance as a toy.
- This manual contains appropriate instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and operations recommended by the manufacturer. Any other intervention must be carried out by an authorized service representative.
- Instructions for proper cleaning are in section "4 Cleaning and Maintenance".
1.2 Electrical Connection
Ensure that the mains voltage and frequency correspond to those indicated on the rating plate at the bottom of the appliance. If the socket and the appliance plug are incompatible, contact technical assistance for replacement.
- Insert the plug into a compliant, grounded power outlet.
- Do not use an adapter.
- Do not use an extension cord.
Intended Use
- The appliance must be used to prepare filter coffee. Any other use is inappropriate. Do not use the appliance for purposes other than those intended.
- Do not use the machine outdoors.
- Do not place the appliance in furniture during operation.
- ⚠️ ATTENTION: Do not use the machine on a surface with cracks.
- The appliance is intended for use in domestic and similar applications, such as:
- In kitchen areas for staff in shops, offices, and other work environments.
- In bed and breakfast rooms and guesthouses.
- By guests in hotels, motels, and residences.
- Other uses, such as in restaurants, bars, and cafes, are inappropriate.
Manufacturer Responsibility
The manufacturer disclaims all responsibility for damages to persons and objects caused by:
- Use of the appliance other than intended.
- Failure to read the user manual.
- Alteration of any part of the appliance.
- Use of non-original spare parts.
- Failure to observe safety warnings.

2.1 Identification Plate
The identification plate provides technical data, the manufacturing number, and the marking. The identification plate must never be removed.
2.2 Before First Use
- Carefully unpack the appliance and remove all packaging materials and the label on the display.
- Wash and thoroughly dry the components of the filter coffee maker (see section "4 Cleaning and Maintenance").
Before use, check that all components are intact and free from cracks. ✏️
Controls Description
(Fig. B)
ON/OFF Button (17): Start/stop brewing. Pressing the button starts coffee brewing according to preset functions. Pressing again interrupts brewing at any time.
Aroma Button (18): Allows selection between Delicate Aroma and Intense Aroma. The intensity selection is visible on the machine's display: one bean for Delicate Aroma, or two beans for Intense Aroma. The selected aroma is maintained for subsequent brewing.
4 Cups Button (19): Allows brewing a small quantity of coffee, approximately 4 cups. For activation, see the "4 Cups Function" section.
Autostart Button (20): Allows programming the automatic start of the appliance for filter coffee preparation at a user-defined time. For setting, activation, and operation, see the "Autostart Function" section.
Clock/Timer Adjustment Lever (9): The side lever allows selecting and adjusting machine settings, including:
- Clock setting.
- Time format.
- Water hardness.
- Activation/deactivation of acoustic signals.
For more details on settings, see the "Machine Configurations" section.
2.4 Display Description (Fig. C)
The display (21) allows the user to view the set functions in detail:

The KEEP WARM mode is automatically activated at the end of coffee brewing, keeping the warming plate on for 40 minutes. In this mode, the coffee will remain hot for 40 minutes after brewing finishes.
Operation
(Fig. D)
- Ensure the plug is correctly inserted into the power outlet.
- When connecting the machine to the power outlet, setting the clock is mandatory (see "Machine Configurations" section).
- Lift the lid (1) by pulling the tab (2) upwards.
- Fill the reservoir (3) with fresh, clean water, being careful not to exceed the maximum level indicated (1.4 litre) (13). Exceeding the maximum level may cause water leaks and irreparable damage to the appliance.
To facilitate reservoir filling, ensure the lid is fully open. ?
- Keep the water tank lid open and insert the permanent filter (6) into the filter holder (4).
- Pour the desired amount of ground coffee based on the number of cups to prepare, using the provided scoop (14).
- The permanent filter allows preparing filter coffee without paper filters. However, depending on personal taste, a #4 paper filter can be used.
- Place the paper filter inside the filter holder and add the desired amount of coffee.
- As an indication, one level scoop of ground coffee is equivalent to one cup of filter coffee. However, the amount of ground coffee to use may vary according to personal taste.
- Use good quality ground coffee with a medium grind.
- Close the lid by lowering the tab (2).
- Place the carafe (11) with its lid (10) on the warming plate (15). Ensure the lid (10) fits perfectly with the anti-drip valve (5).
- Press the ON/OFF button (17) to start coffee brewing: the indicator light on the button (17) illuminates and blinks rapidly throughout the brewing cycle. ☕
Steam emission during the entire coffee brewing cycle is normal. ?
⚠️ Attention: Do not open the water tank lid during the coffee preparation cycle.
- It is possible to stop coffee brewing at any time by pressing the ON/OFF button (17).
⚠️ Attention: Do not open the coffee maker lid at the end of the brewing cycle. Wait at least 5 minutes after brewing finishes before opening the lid.
- After 5 minutes, remove and clean the filter, and refill the reservoir to start a new brewing cycle.
If you do not press the ON/OFF button (17), coffee brewing continues automatically to fill the carafe (10 cups) or until the water in the reservoir is depleted. Other buttons, even if pressed, will not affect or interrupt the coffee brewing.
Detailed Usage
⚠️ Attention: The filter holder and permanent filter may be hot even after coffee brewing. Be careful when removing them.
⚠️ Attention: The base of the carafe can be very hot after coffee brewing. Be careful when removing it and ensure you do not place the carafe on a heat-sensitive surface.
⚠️ Attention: The plate remains hot after coffee brewing: be careful not to touch it when removing the carafe.
KEEP WARM Mode (Keep Warm)
At the end of brewing, the KEEP WARM mode activates automatically, keeping the warming plate on for 40 minutes. In this mode, the coffee will remain hot for 40 minutes after brewing finishes.
In KEEP WARM mode, the indicator light for button (17) blinks slowly, and the KEEP WARM icon lights up on the display. At the end of the KEEP WARM mode, the button (17) light turns off automatically.
It is possible to manually interrupt the KEEP WARM mode at any time by pressing button (17): the indicator light for button (17) and the KEEP WARM icon turn off.
The KEEP WARM mode is not activated if brewing is manually interrupted or if the 4 TASSES function is active.
4 Cups Function
For brewing a small quantity of coffee, approximately 4 cups:
- Press the appropriate button (19) to activate it; the indicator light turns on.
- Press button (19) again to deactivate it.
Autostart Function
To program the automatic start function, you must first set the automatic start time.
Setting Autostart Time
- Verify that the displayed time is correct. If not, set the current time as described in the "Machine Configurations" section.
- Press and hold the button for 3 seconds to set the automatic start time: the button indicator light and the time display (HH:MM) will start blinking.
- Move the lever up (+) or down (-) to set the hour.
- Confirm the hour by moving the lever to the central position and pressing (OK): the set time will be memorized automatically and permanently until changed.
Autostart Function Activation
- Press the button (20): the indicator light for button (20) illuminates, and the programmed hour and minutes for coffee preparation blink on the screen for a few seconds. The current time is then displayed.
Even in Autostart mode, it is possible to select the desired coffee intensity (Aroma button) and set the 4 Cups function. Press the appropriate buttons to save the functions.
- The appliance remains in AUTOSTART mode until the pre-set time. Brewing will start automatically.
- Press the button (20) at any time to exit the mode.
Machine Configurations
The appliance allows personalization of certain settings:
- Clock setting.
- Time format.
- Water hardness.
- Activation/deactivation of acoustic signals.
Clock Setting
On first use, setting the clock is mandatory:
- Plug in the electrical cord.
- The screen blinks.
- Set the hours by moving the lever up (+) to increase the value or down (-) to decrease it. Move the lever to the central position and press (OK) to confirm.
- Set the minutes following the same procedure.
- After confirming the minutes, the appliance activates CLOCK mode.
On first startup, the appliance defaults to 12-hour format with AM/PM indication. To change the time format, see the "Time Format Settings Menu" section.
Time Format Settings Menu
You can set the time format to display in 12-hour (AM/PM) or 24-hour format.
- Access the settings menu by simultaneously pressing and holding buttons (18) and (19) for 3 seconds. Select SE01 by moving the lever and pressing OK.
- Move the lever to select the desired format (12h or 24h).
- Move the lever to the central position and press (OK) to confirm the value. The format blinks for 2 seconds: the setting is saved.
The time format selection only needs to be done once and remains saved as a setting.
Modifying the Time
- Ensure the desired format (12h or 24h) has been set as indicated in the previous section.
- Press and hold the lever (9) in the central position for 3 seconds: the screen will start blinking.
- Modify the hours and minutes as indicated in the "Clock Setting" section.
Water Hardness Setting Menu
The water hardness level can be set by selecting one of the 3 available levels: HARD, MEDIUM, and LIGHT.
- Access the settings menu by simultaneously pressing and holding buttons (18) and (19) for 3 seconds. Select SE02 by moving the lever: the screen defaults to HA02 (medium hardness).
- Move the lever up (+) or down (-) to set the desired level: HA01 (light), HA02 (medium), and HA03 (hard).
- Move the lever to the central position and press (OK) to confirm the value.
The selection blinks for 2 seconds: the setting is saved.
Acoustic Signal Settings Menu
Audible signals can be deactivated/activated as follows:
- Access the settings menu by simultaneously pressing and holding buttons (18) and (19) for 3 seconds. Select SE03 by moving the lever (9).
- Move the lever up or down until OFF is displayed on the screen to deactivate, or ON to activate.
- Move the lever to the central position and press (OK) to confirm the value. The selection blinks for 2 seconds: the setting is saved.
Cleaning and Maintenance
⚠️ Warnings
- Improper Use - Risk of Electric Shock
- Remove the plug from the power outlet before cleaning the coffee maker.
- Do not immerse the coffee maker in water or other liquids.
- Allow the filter coffee machine to cool down before cleaning.
- Improper Use - Risk of Surface Damage
- Do not use steam jets to clean the coffee maker.
- Do not use cleaning products containing chlorine, ammonia, or bleach on parts with superficial metallic finishes (e.g., anodized, nickel-plated, chrome-plated).
- Do not use abrasive or corrosive detergents (e.g., powder products, stain removers, and metal sponges).
- Do not use rough, abrasive materials, or sharp metal scrapers.
4.2 Machine Body Cleaning
For good preservation of external surfaces, clean them regularly after each use, once they have cooled down. Clean with a soft, damp cloth.
4.3 Cleaning Filter Coffee Maker Components
The permanent filter and filter holder can be washed by hand under running water to remove coffee residue, or in the dishwasher. The carafe can be washed with hot soapy water and a soft brush after emptying any coffee residue to prevent staining. Always dry all components thoroughly after each cleaning.
⚠️ Improper Use: Do not wash the carafe in the dishwasher to avoid permanent damage.
4.4 Rinsing Internal Circuits
Rinse the internal circuits once the reservoir is filled:
- Place the carafe (11) on the warming plate (15) WITHOUT adding ground coffee to the filter.
- Press the ON/OFF button (17).
- Wait for the cycle to finish and empty the carafe.
- The appliance is then ready for use.
Descaling
⚠️ Attention: Coffee preparation may continue even if the DESCALING alarm is active.
⚠️ Attention: Perform the descaling cycle when the appliance signals it.
⚠️ Attention: Limescale deposits can impair the proper functioning of the appliance, especially with particularly hard water.
Correct descaling helps preserve the coffee's aroma and the appliance's functionality over time. ☕
⚠️ Risk of Injury and Appliance Damage:
- The descaler contains acids that can irritate the skin and eyes.
- Scrupulously follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety warnings on the packaging in case of contact with skin or eyes.
- Use descalers recommended by Smeg to avoid damage to the filter coffee maker.
The appliance automatically signals when a descaling cycle is necessary based on the set water hardness (see "Water Hardness Setting Menu" section). The DESCALING icon will start blinking on the display.
To activate the descaling cycle:
- Pour water and descaler into the water reservoir up to the maximum level and following the doses recommended by the descaler manufacturer.
- Press buttons (17) and (20) simultaneously for 5 seconds to activate DESCALING mode: the indicator lights for buttons (17) and (20) will blink, and the DESCALING icon will blink until the cycle is complete.
- At the end of the cycle, the screen returns to CLOCK mode, and the DESCALING icon disappears.
- Perform the rinsing cycle (see section "4.4 Rinsing Internal Circuits").
Troubleshooting
What to do if...
