The most energy-efficient intersection of all times: Sitraffic One with two global firsts...

Global firsts and key benefits

For budget managers in municipal transport departments, saving energy is paramount while maintaining the highest safety standards. Sitraffic® One is the world's first solution to meet both requirements, consisting of a complete suite of 1-Watt devices designed according to the strict SIL3 safety standard.

Global first #1: Save 1,600 kWh of power and 960 kg of CO₂ – per intersection and year

The Silux2 VLP signal head, known as "Very Low Power," lives up to its name. This innovative signal head consumes no more than 1–2 Watts per aspect, making it the most energy-efficient solution on the market. It offers energy savings of 80% compared to standard LED technology. At an average intersection, Sitraffic One reduces annual power consumption by approximately 1,600 kWh and CO₂ emissions by 960 kg. Conversion to 1Watt Technology from Siemens could cut annual energy costs for a city like Berlin by over €500,000 per year.

Global first #2: Controllers AND signal heads certified to SIL3 safety standard

The 1Watt Silux2 VLP signal head features both conventional voltage and current monitoring, plus a novel optical monitoring function, achieving the highest safety level for traffic control equipment: SIL3. An independent test institute has certified full conformity with the SIL3 standard. Sitraffic One is the first system globally to include both controllers and signal heads designed according to the strict SIL3 requirements set down in EN 61508.

Extremely low power consumption combined with high safety standards represents a significant innovative leap, contributing to higher road safety and providing greater financial scope for responsible municipal authorities.

Sitraffic One in a nutshell

Sitraffic One: The world's first traffic light system in 1Watt Technology

This section describes a typical intersection setup:

System integration at its best: 1Watt Technology plus proven Silux2 features

Sitraffic One: 1Watt Technology for the entire intersection

The innovative 1Watt Technology is part of the world's most successful traffic engineering platform: Sitraffic. Sitraffic One devices offer the well-known advantages of the Sitraffic family, including ease of use and seamless integration into existing traffic control infrastructure. The new very-low-power signal heads, Silux2 VLP, share these advantages.

Sitraffic One is a complete intersection solution comprising signal heads, controllers, and peripherals based on 1Watt Technology. The new Silux2 VLP signal head is compatible with both the Sitraffic sX-V and the Sitraffic C920ES controllers. Siemens has collaborated with manufacturers like RTB, Langmatz, and Urich to provide fully compatible peripherals, including push buttons and acoustic signals for the blind.

Special design for added protection against mains fluctuations

With increasing reliance on renewable energy sources, mains fluctuations are becoming more frequent. Sitraffic One's 1Watt Technology decouples the signal head power supply from the controller's mains supply. The 1Watt power supply module handles strong fluctuations, providing a stable 24-V DC supply to the signal head, enhancing system robustness, monitoring ease, safety, and availability.

The new Silux2 VLP signal head: durable, compatible, available as retrofit

The new 1Watt Technology signal heads are available as retrofit kits or in Ecolight and Classic housings. They feature reliable driver modules and durable components, ensuring exceptionally stable operation and an extended service life. The LED light sources produce minimal heat, eliminating the need for cooling elements. The extremely low power consumption (1–2 Watt per aspect) enables cost-efficient use of central DC power supply units.

... and with the ease of handling typical of Silux2

Similar to other Silux2 LED signal heads, Silux2 VLP can be equipped with various removable symbol inserts. These masks are easily fitted inside the detachable front lens. Non-standard symbols are available upon request. Replacing or rotating inserts is simple, thanks to an integrated door with an easy-to-open bayonet lock.

Silux2 VLP signal head: dual-channel optical monitoring function for highest SIL3 safety level

In addition to conventional monitoring, the Silux2 VLP is equipped with an LED monitoring function using an integrated photo detector. This detector measures incident light intensity and other LED parameters, passing data to the LED electronics board. This capability will enable prediction of potential LED failures in the future.

Optical monitoring function

Description of diagram: The optical monitoring function uses a cover to keep out extraneous light. LED light reaches sensor optics, which deflect the signal light to a photo detector. The photo detector measures incident light and sends information to the LED electronics board.
