Introduction

Congratulations on choosing the DigiTech Jimi Hendrix Experience™ Artist Series Pedal. This pedal utilizes DigiTech's Production Modeling™ technology to reproduce the studio and live sounds and effects of Jimi Hendrix. It models key components like Marshall™ Super Lead™ and Fender™ BassMan™ amps, Dallas Arbiter™ Fuzz Face™, Roger Mayer™ Octavia™, Unicord™ Univibe™, and Vox™ Clyde McCoy Wah™ pedals, capturing seven distinctive tones from classic Jimi recordings.

The pedal was conceived in conjunction with the Hendrix family and Eddie Kramer, Jimi's recording engineer.

Set-Up Directions

  1. Turn down amplifier/mixer volume.
  2. Connect pedal output to amplifier/mixer input (refer to Mode Diagrams).
  3. Connect guitar to pedal input.
  4. Set the pedal's LEVEL control to minimum.
  5. Connect the power supply.
  6. Select an Output Mode (optional, see "Selecting the Flexible Output Mode").
  7. Turn up amplifier/mixer level.
  8. Turn on the effect by pressing the TOE or HEEL SWITCH and gradually increase the LEVEL control.

Pedal Controls and Connections

The pedal features several controls and connection points:

Connections:

  • INPUT: Connect your instrument here.
  • FOOTSWITCH: Connect the optional FS3X footswitch.
  • OUT 1 (AMP): Output jack for a guitar amplifier.
  • OUT 2 (MIXER): Output tailored for full-range audio systems, mixers, or recording devices.

Controls:

  • GAIN (Tip): Controls amp gain or fuzz gain depending on the model.
  • LEVEL (Ring): Controls the overall output level.
  • HIGH (Tip): Controls high-frequency boost/cut.
  • LOW (Ring): Controls low-frequency boost/cut.
  • REVERB (Tip): Controls reverb level.
  • CONTROL (Ring): Model-dependent function (refer to Control Tables).
  • MODELS: Selects one of seven Jimi Hendrix tones.

Indicator LED:

Indicates the present mode: OFF=bypass, GREEN=toe mode, RED=heel mode 1, YELLOW=heel mode 2.

Model Descriptions

The pedal offers seven signature Jimi Hendrix tones:

Model 1: "Purple Haze"

Description: Inspired by the song. Features Dallas Arbiter™ Fuzz Face™, Marshall™ 100W Super Lead™, and EMT Plate Reverb for the intro. Solo adds Roger Mayer™ Octavia™.

Activation: TOE SWITCH for intro tone, HEEL SWITCH for solo tone.

Model 2: "Wind Cries Mary"

Description: Captures Jimi's blues connection. Features EMT Plate Reverb and Marshall 100W Super Lead™ amp for both intro and solo, with more gain in the solo.

Activation: TOE SWITCH for intro tone, HEEL SWITCH for solo tone.

Model 3: "Foxey Lady"

Description: Uses Dallas Arbiter™ Fuzz Face™, Marshall™ 100W Super Lead™ amp, and EMT Plate Reverb for churning, searing tones. Solo has more gain and a thicker bottom end.

Activation: TOE SWITCH for intro tone, HEEL SWITCH for solo tone.

Model 4: "Little Wing"

Description: Features Marshall 100W Super Lead™ amp, EMT Plate Reverb, and a custom rotary speaker for the intro. Solo adds tape flanging. EXPRESSION PEDAL controls rotary amount and tape flange effect.

Activation: TOE SWITCH for intro tone, HEEL SWITCH for solo tone.

Stereo Mode Note: In stereo modes, Model 4's intro tone splits into a dirty amp sound (OUT 1) and a clean direct sound (OUT 2).

Model 5: "All Along The Watchtower"

Description: Intro features acoustic guitar with compression and EMT Plate Reverb. First solo uses Marshall™ 100W Super Lead™ amp, delay, and EMT Plate Reverb. Second solo adds Vox™ Clyde McCoy Wah™.

Activation: TOE SWITCH for intro tone, HEEL SWITCH to cycle through solo tones. EXPRESSION PEDAL controls delay (solo 1) and Wah (solo 2).

Model 6: "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"

Description: Intro features Vox Clyde McCoy Wah™, Brownface Fender™ Bassman™, slapback delay, and EMT Plate Reverb. First solo replaces Wah with Dallas™ Arbiter™ Fuzz Face™. Second solo includes Wah, distortion, Bassman amp, delay, and reverb.

Activation: TOE SWITCH for intro tone, HEEL SWITCH to cycle through solo tones.

Model 7: "Star Spangled Banner (Live)"/"Machine Gun"

Description: "Machine Gun" tone uses Unicord™ Univibe™, Marshall™ 100W Super Lead™ amp, and hall reverb. "Star Spangled Banner" solo adds Dallas Arbiter™ Fuzz Face™ for Woodstock tones.

Activation: TOE SWITCH for intro tone, HEEL SWITCH for solo tone. EXPRESSION PEDAL controls Univibe speed.

Flexible Output Modes™

The pedal offers three Flexible Output Modes:

  • Mode 1 (MONO): Default output when one cord is used.
  • Mode 2 (STEREO MIXER): Default stereo mode when two cords are used.
  • Mode 3 (STEREO AMP): Stereo mode for two amps, enabled via setup.

Selecting the Flexible Output Mode™

  1. Power up the pedal.
  2. Select Model 7 using the MODEL knob.
  3. Press and hold the HEEL SWITCH for five seconds (INDICATOR LED flashes yellow).
  4. Release the HEEL SWITCH.
  5. To select STEREO AMP mode, turn the MODEL knob to Model 6. To select STEREO MIXER mode, leave the MODEL knob at Model 7.
  6. Press the TOE SWITCH to exit setup (INDICATOR LED turns off).

Note: Model 7 is STEREO MIXER; Model 6 is STEREO AMP. Selecting other models prevents exiting setup.

Diagram Descriptions

Mode One: Single Amp OR Single Mixer Out - Mono (default)

This mode is for connecting to either a single amplifier or a single mixer, but not both simultaneously. The diagram shows the Jimi Hendrix Experience pedal connected to either an amplifier or a mixer, with an optional FS3X Footswitch.

Mode Two: Stereo Mixer

This mode is for stereo output to a mixer. The diagram shows the pedal connected to a mixer using two outputs, with an optional FS3X Footswitch.

Mode Three: Stereo Amp

This mode is for stereo output to two amplifiers. The diagram shows the pedal connected to two amplifiers using its two outputs, with an optional FS3X Footswitch.

Calibrating the Expression Pedal

If the expression pedal's range diminishes, recalibration may be needed.

  1. Select Model 1 using the MODEL knob.
  2. Press and hold the HEEL SWITCH for five seconds (INDICATOR LED flashes green).
  3. While the LED flashes green, move the EXPRESSION PEDAL fully forward (toe down).
  4. Select Model 2 using the MODEL knob (INDICATOR LED flashes yellow).
  5. While the LED flashes yellow, move the EXPRESSION PEDAL fully back (toe up).
  6. Select Model 3 using the MODEL knob. The INDICATOR LED should flash green three times and turn off, indicating successful calibration.

Note: If calibration fails, the LED flashes red. Repeat steps 3-6 until successful. If it fails, select Model 1 and restart the process.

Using the Optional FS3X Footswitch

The FS3X footswitch provides hands-free access to models and modes. It connects via a 1/4" stereo TRS cable.

  • UP switch: Cycles to the next higher model. Hold for 3 seconds to select Model 7.
  • DOWN switch: Cycles to the next lower model. Hold for 3 seconds to select Model 1.
  • MODE switch: Cycles through TOE SWITCH (intro tone, green LED), HEEL SWITCH 1 (solo tone 1, red LED), and HEEL SWITCH 2 (solo tone 2, yellow LED).

Warranty

DigiTech warrants this product for one year (extended to six years if registered) against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use in the U.S.A. Registration must be completed within ten days of purchase. DigiTech is not liable for consequential damages. Proof of purchase is required. DigiTech reserves the right to change product design without obligation. Warranty is void if the product is tampered with or used with incorrect AC voltages.
