Warnings and Cautions

  • WARNING: Not for use with aggressive dogs. If your dog is prone to aggressive behavior, this product can cause severe injury or death. Consult your veterinarian or a certified trainer if unsure.
  • CAUTION: Risk of electric shock. Use the Fence Transmitter indoors in a dry location only.

This PetSafe® Stay + Play Wireless Fence® system is NOT a solid barrier. It acts as a deterrent using Static Correction to remind pets to stay within the established boundary. Regular training is important. Static Correction tolerance varies by pet. Radio Systems Corporation cannot guarantee the system will, in all cases, keep a pet within the boundary. Not all pets can be trained to avoid crossing the boundary. If your pet may pose a danger to others or harm himself if not contained, do NOT rely solely on this system. Radio Systems Corporation is not liable for property damage, economic loss, or consequential damages resulting from an animal crossing the boundary.

Proper collar fit is crucial. A collar worn too long or too tight can cause skin damage, including redness and pressure ulcers (bed sores).

  • Avoid leaving the collar on the dog for more than 12 hours per day.
  • When possible, reposition the collar on the pet's neck every 1 to 2 hours.
  • Check the fit to prevent excessive pressure, following manual instructions.
  • Never connect a lead to the electronic collar, as it will cause excessive pressure on the contacts.
  • When using a separate collar for a lead, do not put pressure on the electronic collar.
  • Wash the dog's neck area and collar contacts weekly with a damp cloth.
  • Examine the contact area daily for signs of a rash or sore.
  • If a rash or sore is found, discontinue use until the skin has healed.
  • If the condition persists beyond 48 hours, consult your veterinarian.
  • Visit our website for additional information on bed sores and pressure necrosis.

Setup and Usage Precautions

  • Continue daily checks of the contact area. If redness or sores are found, discontinue use until the skin has fully healed.
  • You may need to trim hair in the area of the Contact Points. Never shave the dog's neck, as this may lead to a rash or infection.
  • Always remove your dog's Receiver Collar before performing any Transmitter testing.
  • The Receiver Collar should not be on your dog when the system is tested to avoid unintended corrections.
  • The Boundary Zone must be tested whenever the Transmitter setting is adjusted to prevent unintended corrections.
  • If using a collar and leash for training, ensure the extra collar does not put pressure on the Contact Points.
  • To prevent unintended correction, remove the Receiver Collar from your pet when indoors.
  • Never remove power from the system when the collar is on the pet, as this may activate the Receiver Collar.
  • Radio Systems Corporation recommends using an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the wireless fence. In case of a power outage, your pet will be unprotected without a UPS.
  • In rare instances, if your pet is near the boundary when power fails, a correction may occur. This correction will stop after a 15-second timeout.
  • UPS Backup Time Examples: A 400 VA UPS may provide 1 hour of backup; a 900 VA UPS may provide 4 hours. Settings below maximum fence size can increase backup time.
  • To prevent unintended correction, set the Static Correction on the Receiver Collar to Level 1 (tone only) after placing Boundary Flags.
  • Do not charge your Receiver Collar every night; frequent charging can reduce battery life. Charge when the Receiver Indicator Light blinks yellow or red.
  • Do not place anything on top of the Transmitter or cover ventilation holes, as this may overheat the Transmitter.
  • Do not place the Transmitter in a closet or any confined, unventilated area.
  • Do not place the Transmitter on or near a metal surface.

How the System Works

The PetSafe® Stay + Play Wireless Fence® system is proven safe, comfortable, and effective for pets over 5 pounds. It transmits a radio signal up to 105 feet in all directions. You define the Pet Area with Boundary Flags for training. Your pet wears a Receiver Collar with Contact Points that touch its neck. Once trained, the pet roams freely in the Pet Area. When the pet reaches the Boundary Zone, the Receiver Collar emits a warning tone before delivering a Static Correction to get its attention until it returns to the Pet Area.

Key Definitions

  • Transmitter: Transmits the radio signal; center of the Pet Area. Must be located indoors.
  • Pet Area: The distance from the Transmitter where your pet can roam freely.
  • Boundary Zone: A 2 to 3-foot wide area outside the Pet Area where the Receiver Collar begins to tone and then deliver Static Correction. The correction continues beyond the Pet Area. Note: The Receiver Collar has a safety time-out feature that stops correcting after 15 seconds if the pet remains outside the Pet Area.
  • Receiver Collar: Receives the radio signal from the Transmitter.
  • Receiver Indicator Light: Indicates the correction level and battery status.
  • Contact Points: Deliver the Static Correction when the pet enters the Boundary Zone.
  • Mode Button: Turns the Receiver Collar on/off and adjusts the Static Correction level.
  • Receiver Charger: Charges the Receiver Collar battery.
  • Receiver Charge Jack: Connection point for charging the Receiver battery.
  • Power Light: Indicates when the Transmitter is on.
  • Power Jack: Where the Power Adapter plugs into the Transmitter. Powered by a standard 120-volt outlet.
  • Boundary Switch: Adjusts the size of the Pet Area desired. Note: Adjusting this switch does not change the Static Correction level.
  • Boundary Control Dial: Adjusts the distance from the Transmitter to the Boundary Zone. Note: Adjusting this dial does not change the Static Correction level.
  • Alarm Disable Button: Silences Power Loss Alarm and re-initiates the Transmitter radio signal after a Metal Interference Alarm.
  • Power Loss Alarm: An intermittent single tone indicating power has been removed from the Transmitter.
  • Metal Interference Alarm: An intermittent double tone indicating the Transmitter is too close to a metal surface, disabling the signal.
  • Transmission Failure Alarm: A continuous tone indicating a Transmitter problem.

Note: In many neighborhoods, a nearby property line may limit how large the Pet Area can be.

Operating Guide

Step 1: Set Up the Transmitter

Important: You may need to move the Transmitter several times to find the final location. The Transmitter should be at the exact center of the Pet Area.

Diagram: Shows Transmitter with Power Light, Power Jack, Boundary Switch, Boundary Control Dial, and Alarm Disable Button.

Place the Transmitter:

  • At least 2 feet above the floor, on the ground floor of your home.
  • In a dry, well-ventilated, protected area.
  • In an area where temperatures do not fall below -10°F (-23°C).
  • On a non-metal table or other hard surface to ensure proper ventilation (Diagram 1A: Wall Mount / Tabletop).
  • At least 3 feet from large metal objects, as these may reduce the size and shape of your Pet Area (Diagram 1B: Shows 3 ft clearance from metal objects). Placing the Transmitter inside a metal building or shed can reduce the maximum range.

You can also mount the Transmitter on a wall. A mounting template is included on the back of this guide.

  • NOTICE: Do not place anything on top of the Transmitter or cover any ventilation holes. Do not place the Transmitter in a closet or any other confined, unventilated area. Do not place the Transmitter on a metal surface.

Transmitter Alarms

The Transmitter has three built-in warning alarms:

  • Power Loss Alarm
  • Metal Interference Alarm
  • Transmission Failure Alarm

Power Loss Alarm

Sounds an intermittent single tone when power is removed. Lasts up to 30 minutes. Your pet is no longer contained. Turn off by:

  1. Plugging adapter into a functional 120-volt outlet.
  2. Unplugging the Transmitter power adapter.
  3. Pressing the Alarm Disable button for 5 seconds.

Metal Interference Alarm

Sounds an intermittent double tone when the Transmitter is near a metal surface. Transmission is disabled. Relocate the Transmitter away from metal or press the Alarm Disable Button for 5 seconds to turn off and re-initiate the signal.

Transmission Failure Alarm

A continuous tone indicating a Transmitter problem. Your pet can no longer be contained. Contact Customer Care for a replacement.

Step 2: Charge the Receiver Collar

Diagram: Shows Receiver Collar with Receiver Indicator Light, Contact Point, Mode Button, and Receiver Charge Jack.

Plug the Receiver Collar Charger into a standard AC wall outlet and the Receiver Charge Jack. The collar light glows red while charging and turns green when complete. A safety circuit prevents overcharging. A full charge takes 2-3 hours and lasts up to 3 weeks. NOTICE: Do not charge your Receiver Collar every night; frequent charging can negatively affect the battery. Charge when the Receiver Indicator Light blinks yellow or red.

Step 3: Prepare the Receiver Collar

Your Receiver Collar comes with Short Contact Points. Use Long Contact Points for pets with long or thick hair. Tighten Contact Points with the Contact Point Wrench (Diagram 3A). Check tightness weekly.

Turn the Receiver Collar ON

Press and hold the Mode Button for 5 seconds (Diagram 3B). The Receiver Indicator Light will turn on for 5 seconds, showing battery status, then flash the Static Correction level settings (Diagram 3C).

Turn the Receiver Collar OFF

Press and hold the Mode Button for 5 seconds. The red indicator light will be on, then turn off. To extend battery life, turn off the collar when not in use.

Over Correction Protection

If your pet enters the Boundary Zone or continues beyond the Pet Area, this feature limits Static Correction to 15 seconds. The green light remains on for 10 seconds. If your pet leaves the Pet Area, he will not receive a Static Correction upon return.

Step 4: Adjust the Pet Area to Desired Size

Ensure the entire Pet Area is within your property boundaries (Diagram 4A: Pet Area / Street). Start determining the Boundary Zone at the shortest distance from the Transmitter. Place the Boundary Switch on “Low” if the Boundary Zone will be less than 45 feet.

Test Light Instructions

  1. Ensure the Receiver Collar Battery is charged. Set Correction Level to 2 or above.
  2. Hold the Test Light Contacts to the Contact Points (Diagram 4B).
  3. Walk towards the Boundary Zone holding the Receiver Collar at your pet's neck level (Diagram 4E) until the Test Light flashes (Diagram 4F). Save the Test Light for future testing.

Note: If your neighbor has an In-Ground Containment System, see Troubleshooting section page 23.

To maximize your Pet Area, set the Boundary Switch to “High” (Diagram 4C) and the Boundary Control Dial to “8” (Diagram 4D). Plug the Power Adapter into the Power Jack and a standard 120-volt outlet.

Two-Person Method

Hold the Receiver Collar at your pet's neck height (Diagram 4E) with the logo side facing away from the Transmitter and Contact Points facing upwards. Walk to the edge of the desired Pet Area. Facing away from the Transmitter, hold the Receiver Collar at the edge of the desired Pet Area (Diagram 4F). Starting with the Boundary Control Dial at “8”, have a second person turn the dial down SLOWLY. When the Receiver Collar tone starts, stop turning. Walk back into the Pet Area until the receiver stops sounding. Verify the boundary by walking towards it and confirming the tone/test light flashes begin at the desired location. Test at multiple locations and record your settings on page 13.

One-Person Method

Measure the shortest distance to the desired Boundary Zone. Use the Transmitter Range Chart to set the Boundary Switch and Boundary Control Dial. Hold the Test Light Contacts to the Contact Points (Diagram 4B). Take the Receiver Collar to the Boundary Zone with the logo side away from the Transmitter and Contact Points upwards (Diagram 4F). Hold at pet's neck level (Diagram 4E) until the collar tones and Test Light flashes. If the tone sounds before or after the desired zone, adjust the Boundary Control Dial. Repeat until the tone sounds at the desired location. Record your settings.

Step 5: Place the Boundary Flags

Boundary Flags are visual reminders for your pet. The Receiver Collar activates within 2 to 3 feet of the flags.

  1. Using the Test Light (Static Correction Level set at 2 or greater), hold the Receiver Collar at your pet's neck height with the logo side away from the Transmitter.
  2. Walk towards the Boundary Zone until the Receiver Collar beeps and the Test Light flashes (Diagram 5A).
  3. Place a Boundary Flag in the ground (Diagram 5B).
  4. Walk back into the Pet Area until the beeping stops.
  5. Repeat this process around the Boundary Zone, placing flags every 10 feet. The Boundary Zone is 2 to 3 feet wide.

Step 6: Fit the Receiver Collar

Important: Proper fit and placement are crucial for effective training. Contact Points must have direct contact with your pet's skin on the underside of its neck.

CAUTION: A collar worn too long or too tight can cause skin damage (redness to pressure ulcers, or bed sores). Follow these instructions:

  • Avoid leaving the collar on the dog for more than 12 hours per day.
  • Reposition the collar on the pet's neck every 1 to 2 hours.
  • Check the fit to prevent excessive pressure.
  • Never connect a lead to the electronic collar.
  • When using a separate collar for a lead, do not put pressure on the electronic collar.
  • Wash the dog's neck area and contacts weekly with a damp cloth.
  • Examine the contact area daily for signs of a rash or sore.
  • If a rash or sore is found, discontinue use until the skin has healed.
  • If the condition persists beyond 48 hours, see your veterinarian.
  • Visit our website for additional information on bed sores and pressure necrosis.

These steps help keep your pet secure and comfortable. If your pet becomes tolerant of the collar, some precautions may be relaxed, but daily checks of the contact area are still important.

To assure a proper fit, please follow these steps:

  1. Ensure the Transmitter is not plugged in and the Receiver is turned off.
  2. Start with your pet standing comfortably (Diagram 6A: Pet standing).
  3. To make the warning beep easier to hear, place the Receiver Collar on your pet with the logo side facing your pet's chin.
  4. Center the Contact Points underneath your pet's neck, touching the skin. You may need to trim hair in this area. Never shave the dog's neck.
  5. Check the tightness by inserting one finger between a Contact Point and your pet's neck. The fit should be snug but not constricting (Diagram 6B: Finger test for fit). Recheck the fit after a few minutes and as your pet becomes more comfortable.
  6. Trim the collar if necessary (Diagram 6C: Trimming collar): Mark the desired length, allowing for growth. Cut off excess. Seal the cut edge with a flame.

Diagram: Shows how to re-thread the collar using the Slide Buckle and Ridges.

Training Guide

Be Patient with Your Pet

Important: Proper training is essential for the PetSafe® Stay + Play Wireless Fence® system's success. Remember, it is not a solid barrier. Training should be fun, fair, firm, and consistent.

  • Train for 10-15 minutes at a time. Short, frequent sessions are better than long, infrequent ones.
  • A minimum of 14 days of training is suggested, but may vary by pet.
  • If your pet shows signs of stress (pulling on leash, tucked ears, tail down, lowered body, frantic movement), slow down the training schedule, add days, or increase play time in the Pet Area.
  • Your pet must be comfortable near the Boundary Flags at the end of each session. Spend at least 5 minutes of “play time” within 10 feet of the flags.
  • Finish each session on a positive note with praise and play.
  • Remove the Receiver Collar after each training session.
  • Contain your pet by other means (pen, tie-out, leash) during training.
  • If taking your pet out of the Pet Area during training, remove the Receiver Collar and either pick your pet up or put them in the car.
  • Even if your pet seems to respond well, complete the entire training program for reinforcement.

Diagram: Calendar graphic.

Phase 1: Day 1—Boundary Awareness (Tone Only Training Mode)

Perform three sessions on day 1, each lasting 10-15 minutes.

Goal:

To have your pet learn that the Boundary Flags and warning beep from the Receiver Collar define the new Pet Area.

Setup:

  • Program the Static Correction Level on the Receiver Collar to Level 1 (Tone Only).
  • Put a separate non-metallic collar on your pet's neck ABOVE the Receiver Collar and attach a leash. CAUTION: Ensure the extra collar does not put pressure on the Contact Points.
  • Have small, desirable treats (hot dogs, lunch meat) and your pet's favorite toy available.

Steps:

  1. Begin by walking your pet on a leash in the Pet Area. Praise and talk calmly.
  2. Move toward the Boundary Flags (Diagram 1A). Maintain a happy mood.
  3. With leash control, walk to the flags. As your pet enters the Boundary Zone, the Receiver Collar will beep (Diagram 1B). Allow the pet to stay in the zone for up to 2 seconds, then gently guide them back into the Pet Area (Diagram 1C). Immediately praise and offer a treat as they enter the Pet Area, even if you assisted with the leash.
  4. Repeat this process at the same Boundary Flag until your pet resists entering the Boundary Zone.
  5. Aim to master 3-4 Boundary Flags per session. Make it FUN! Praise if your pet quickly retreats or resists entering the zone.

Phase 2: Days 2 Through 4—Continue Boundary Awareness (Introduction to Static Correction)

Perform three sessions per day, each lasting 10-15 minutes.

Goal:

To train your pet to stay in the Pet Area and respect the boundary.

Setup:

  • Program the Static Correction Level on the Receiver Collar to Level 2.
  • Use a separate non-metallic collar with a leash. CAUTION: Ensure the extra collar does not put pressure on the Contact Points.
  • Have treats and a favorite toy available.

Steps:

  1. Repeat steps 1-5 from Phase 1.
  2. If your pet does not respond to Static Correction, confirm the Receiver Collar is fitted properly (Step 6 on page 15).
  3. If the fit is correct and there's no response, increase the Static Correction Level by 1. Watch for slight reactions like ears up, head turned, or looking at the ground.
  4. Stay at the same flag until your pet resists going into the Boundary Zone.

Phase 3: Days 5 Through 8—Distraction Phase

Perform three training sessions per day, each lasting 10 to 15 minutes.

Goal:

To train your pet to stay within the Pet Area with distractions outside of it.

Setup:

  • Program the Static Correction Level to Level 2 or higher, based on previous reactions.
  • Use a separate non-metallic collar with a leash. CAUTION: Ensure the extra collar does not put pressure on the Contact Points.
  • Have treats and a favorite toy available.
  • Create distractions: have a family member cross the boundary, throw a ball/treat outside the Pet Area, or have a neighbor walk their pet outside. Gradually increase distraction level. Never coax your pet out of the Pet Area.

Steps:

  1. Present the distraction with your pet on a leash.
  2. If your pet does not move toward the distraction, praise and offer a treat.
  3. If your pet reacts to the distraction, allow them into the Boundary Zone.
  4. Help your pet back into the Pet Area if they do not turn back after 2 seconds.
  5. Treat and praise your pet anytime they return to the Pet Area, with or without help.
  6. Repeat with other distractions, using family members if possible.
  7. If your pet does not respond to Static Correction, confirm collar fit.
  8. If fit is correct, increase Static Correction Level by one.

Phase 4: Days 9 Through 14—Unleashed Supervision

Training sessions should start at 10-15 minutes, gradually increasing to over an hour.

Your pet is ready for this step when they clearly avoid the Boundary Zone regardless of distractions. Do not leave your pet unattended during this step.

Goal:

To give your pet free run of the Pet Area off the leash.

Setup:

Adjust the Receiver Collar to the permanent setting appropriate for your pet.

Steps:

  1. Enter the Pet Area with your pet wearing the Receiver Collar.
  2. Walk around the yard and play with your pet, staying within the Pet Area at all times.
  3. Preoccupy yourself with another task in the yard while watching your pet.

Phase 5: Days 15 Through 30—Pet Monitoring

Your pet is ready to run! Check in on your pet at regular intervals.

Note: After training is complete, remove every other Boundary Flag every 4 days until all flags are removed. Save flags for future use.

Taking Your Pet Out of the Pet Area

Important: Remove the Receiver Collar and leave it in the Pet Area.

Once your pet learns the Boundary Zone, they will be reluctant to cross it for walks or car rides.

Option 1:

Replace the Receiver Collar with a regular collar. Put your pet in a car within the Pet Area and drive them out.

Option 2:

Replace the Receiver Collar with a regular collar and leash. Walk your pet out of the Pet Area using a command like “OK” at a specific place (e.g., end of driveway). Always leave the Pet Area with a leash at this place, associating leaving with a leash, location, and person. You may need a food treat and praise to encourage them to leave.

Note: You may also carry your pet out of the Pet Area.

Congratulations! You have now successfully completed the training program.

Troubleshooting

  • Transmitter sounding an intermittent double tone alarm: This is the Metal Interference Alarm. Relocate the Transmitter away from metal or press the Alarm Disable Button for 5 seconds.
  • Transmitter sounding a single tone when unplugging the Power Adapter: This is the Power Loss Alarm. Plug the adapter back in, unplug it, or press the Alarm Disable Button for 5 seconds.
  • Transmitter generating a loud continuous tone: This is the Transmission Failure Alarm. Contact Customer Care for a replacement Transmitter.
  • Receiver Collar not beeping when setting up the Boundary Zone: Ensure the collar is on and lights are flashing. Charge the collar. The tone may be difficult to hear. Use the Test Light to determine the Boundary Zone location. Check Transmitter setup.
  • Receiver Collar not beeping or administering a Static Correction: Ensure the collar is on and lights are flashing. Charge the collar. Verify the Transmitter is plugged in, the Power Light is on, and controls are set correctly.
  • Receiver Collar beeping everywhere: Verify the Transmitter is plugged in, Power Light is on, and controls are set correctly. Bring the Receiver Collar within 10 feet of the Transmitter to reset. Ensure no Transmitter alarm is sounding.
  • Receiver Collar beeping inside the house: It is recommended to remove the Receiver Collar when indoors. Ensure the Transmitter is plugged in and set up correctly. Ensure the entire house is within the Pet Area; move the Transmitter if needed. Remove the collar before moving the Transmitter.
  • Pet receiving Static Correction in a metal crate: The metal crate may block the Transmitter signal. Remove the Receiver Collar before placing the pet in the crate.
  • Boundary Zone seems to fluctuate: This is normal due to electromagnetic fields and surrounding electronic noise (up to 5% fluctuation). The activation point can be influenced by the collar's speed and orientation.
  • Receiver Collar activates in the middle of the yard: This can occur due to signal loss from metal objects, orientation changes, or electronic noise. Relocate the Transmitter and reset the Pet Area.
  • Receiver Collar beeping, but pet not responding to Static Correction: Ensure Static Correction Level is set at 2 or above. Test with the Test Light. Check collar fit. Trim fur or use longer Contact Points. Ensure Contact Points touch skin. Increase the Static Correction Level. Repeat training steps.
  • Pet reacts strongly to Static Correction and becomes fearful: Lower the Static Correction Level. Ensure you have control (leash) during first corrections and lead the pet into the Pet Area with praise. If fear persists, suspend training and restart later, ending sessions positively.
  • Transmitter Power Light is not on: Ensure the Power Adapter is plugged into a working 120-volt outlet. Verify the outlet works with another device. If the light remains off, the Transmitter or Adapter may need replacement; contact Customer Care.
  • Setting up Pet Area, turned down Boundary Control Dial, and collar no longer beeps/corrects: You may have turned the dial too quickly, triggering the power-fail mode (a safety feature). Bring the Receiver Collar within 10 feet of the Transmitter, readjust the Boundary Control Dial slowly, and reset the Boundary Zone.
  • Neighbor's In-Ground Containment system interferes, and Receiver Collar does not activate near their property: Your neighbor's system signal may interfere. Reduce your Pet Area size or move your Transmitter away from their system. Adjust your Pet Area to activate at least 5 feet beyond the reduced boundary setting when walking towards their fence.
  • Receiver Collar has injured pet's neck: This is usually due to pressure ulcers from improper fit or not following safety information. Electronic collars do not cause electrical burns.
