Ducati Panigale V2 Review: The Ultimate Accessible Supersport
By Michael Neeves, Chief Road Tester
The Sweet Spot: Performance and Agility
Ducati's Panigale V2, priced at £16,995 for the S model, offers a compelling blend of performance and agility, making it a standout in the supersport category. Despite a 35bhp reduction from previous models, the V2 is 17kg lighter and more user-friendly, providing an accessible yet thrilling riding experience.
The bike's new 890cc V-twin engine delivers 118bhp and 70% of its torque from 3000rpm, with 80% available from 4000rpm up to 11,000rpm. This power delivery is described as friendly and controllable, a departure from more aggressive superbikes. The engine is lighter and more compact, contributing to the bike's overall agility. It's noted that the bike can loft a front wheel ⬆️ in the first three gears with wheelie control off.
Key Specifications:
- Engine: 890cc V-twin
- Power: 118 bhp
- Torque: 69 lb.ft
- Wet Weight (no fuel): 176 kg
- Price (S model): £16,995
Riding Experience and Handling
The Panigale V2 excels in handling, described as having "pin-sharp steering" and a "hunger for corner speed." The chassis is designed for precision, allowing riders to carve through corners and hit apexes effectively. The bike's stability and braking performance are impressive, with Brembo M50 calipers providing strong stopping power. Riders can use them to their maximum with significant effort.
The riding position is noted as being more comfortable than traditional supersports, with raised, widely spaced clip-ons (60mm higher than the old V2) offering better wrist comfort and more room for taller riders. This makes it suitable for longer rides and track days without excessive fatigue. The bike is described as mixing easy performance with fun.
Rider Aids and Electronics:
- Superbike-derived electronic rider aids
- Lean-sensitive traction control
- Anti-wheelie system
- Cornering ABS
- Up/down quickshifter and autoblipper
- New 5-inch colour TFT dash with Road, Road Pro, and Track modes
The electronics, including a silky anti-wheelie system and foolproof cornering ABS, enhance safety and performance. The quickshifter and autoblipper are reported to work superbly, though occasional missed gears can occur if changing too quickly.
Technical Innovations and Design
The new V-twin engine is 9.5kg lighter than the previous 'Superquadro' engine, weighing 54.4kg. It features variable intake valve timing and hollow-stemmed valves for reduced inertia. Spring-actuated valves replace the traditional Desmo system, deemed unnecessary for the V2's power and rev range.
Visually, the bike features neat underseat exhaust cans, reminiscent of Ducati's factory superbikes and the Panigale 1299 Final Edition. The chassis uses a cast aluminium monocoque airbox frame, incorporating cut-outs for flex and using the engine as a stressed member.
The V2 S model includes Öhlins suspension, a lightweight battery, and a single seat, differentiating it from the standard model. The swingarm is a V4 Panigale-style hollow aluminium double-sided unit, contributing to reduced weight and improved lateral flex.
Market Position and Rivals
Ducati's success in the World Supersport championship with the previous Panigale V2 provides context for the development of this new model. The Panigale V2 is positioned to compete with 600cc and 750cc four-cylinder bikes, 765cc and 800cc triples, and upcoming models like the Yamaha R9 and KTM 990 RC R.
The review highlights that while the 118bhp figure might seem modest compared to litre-class superbikes, it's the right amount for enjoyable riding on both road and track. The bike is praised for its balance of performance, handling, and rider-friendliness, making it a "proper Ducati" that is less intimidating than its more powerful siblings.
Conclusion
The Ducati Panigale V2 is lauded as a "breath of fresh air" for its light, agile, and safe performance. It offers an "unquenchable lust for corner speed" and strong stopping power. While expensive, the price is justified by its performance, build quality, and advanced electronics. It's considered a superb road bike, offering a more accessible supersport experience.
