Dimensioned Sketch
Diagram description: A schematic drawing of the LSTR Direct Storage Vessel showing various connection points and dimensions labeled with letters and numbers. Key labels include A (Total height), D (Diameter), J, K, L, M, N, P, S, T, W, X, Y (various heights for connections and features), and numbered connections (1-6, 10) indicating pipe sizes and types (e.g., Rp 1/4", R 1 1/2"). The diagram illustrates the internal layout and external dimensions relevant for installation.
Installation
Note: This manual covers unvented installations only. For vented installations, contact the supplier.
2.1 Installation Diagram
Diagram description: The installation diagram illustrates the typical setup for an unvented storage vessel. It shows connections for cold water supply (A), hot water supply (B), and circulation pipe (C). Key components are labeled with numbers: 1 (pressure relief valve), 3 (T&P-valve), 4 (stop valve), 5 (non-return valve), 6 (circulation pump - optional), 9 (drain valve), 11 (service stop valve), 12 (temperature gauge - optional), 14 (draw-off points), 15 (expansion valve), and 16 (expansion vessel). The diagram depicts how these components are plumbed into the system, including safety features like pressure relief and expansion.
2.2 Water Connections
Warning: Installation must be performed by a competent person, adhering to general and local regulations.
2.2.1 Cold Water Side
Refer to diagram (A).
- Fit an approved stop valve (4) on the water supply side as per regulations.
- The vessel's maximum working pressure is 10 bar. Install an approved pressure-reducing valve (1) if the water pipe pressure may exceed 10 bar.
- Fit a non-return valve (5) and an expansion vessel (16).
- Fit an expansion valve (15) and connect its overflow to an open waste water pipe.
2.2.2 Hot Water Side
Refer to diagram (B).
Note: Insulating long hot water pipes prevents energy loss.
- Optional: Fit a temperature gauge (12) to monitor tap water temperature.
- Fit the T&P valve (3).
- Fit a stop valve (11) in the hot water outlet pipe for servicing.
2.2.3 Circulation Pipe
Refer to diagram (C).
A circulation pump can be installed for immediate hot water flow, improving comfort and reducing water wastage.
- Fit a circulation pump (6) with appropriate capacity for the circulation system's length and resistance.
- Fit a non-return valve (5) after the circulation pump to ensure correct circulation direction.
- Fit two stop valves (4) for servicing.
- Connect the circulation pipe as shown in the installation diagram.
Filling and Draining
Note: This manual covers unvented installations only. For vented installations, contact the supplier.
3.1 Filling
Follow these steps to fill the water heater:
- Open the stop valve (11) in the hot water pipe and any stop valves (4) for the circulation pump (6).
- Close the drain valve (9).
- Open the nearest hot water draw-off point (14).
- Open the stop valve (4) on the cold water side (A) to allow cold water into the heater.
- Fill the heater completely. A full water jet from the draw-off point indicates it is full.
- Bleed air from the entire installation by opening all draw-off points.
- The heater is now under water supply pressure. No water should leak from the expansion valve or T&P valve (3). If leaks occur, check:
- Water supply pressure exceeding the specified value (refer to 1.6 "General specifications"). Fit a pressure-reducing valve (1) if necessary.
- Defective or incorrectly fitted expansion valve in the cold supply setup.
3.2 Draining
- Close the stop valve (4) between the cold water head tank and the cold water inlet (A).
- Open the drain valve (9).
- Bleed the water heater (or installation) to ensure complete draining.
Maintenance
Warning: Maintenance must only be carried out by a competent person.
The storage vessel requires water-side maintenance at each service, following this order:
- Preparation for maintenance
- Water-side maintenance
- Finalising maintenance
Note: Before ordering spare parts, record the installation type, model, and serial number from the rating plate.
4.1 Preparation for Maintenance
This involves testing and checking component functionality:
- Test the overflow valve of the protected cold supply setup.
- Check drainage pipes from discharge points and remove scale deposits.
- Drain the storage vessel.
4.2 Water-side Maintenance
This includes descaling and cleaning the tank, and checking the anode.
4.2.1 Descaling and Cleaning the Tank
Scale and lime build-up reduce heat conduction. Periodic cleaning and descaling prevents this, extending vessel life and improving heating. Consider scale formation rate based on local water composition, consumption, and temperature. A maximum water temperature of 60°C is recommended to prevent excessive scale build-up.
Replace the gasket, washers, and bolts for a watertight seal during reassembly. Spare parts are available from the supplier/manufacturer.
The vessel has a cleaning opening for easier maintenance.
Work Order:
- Undo bolts from the cover.
- Remove cover and gasket.
- Inspect tank and remove loose scale/contamination.
- If scale is stubborn, use a descaling agent. Consult supplier/manufacturer for advice on the correct agent.
- Close the cleaning opening. Tighten lid bolts to a maximum torque of 50 Nm to prevent tank damage. Use appropriate tools.
4.2.2 Checking Anode
Anodes protect the tank sacrificially. Insufficient anode material can lead to poor protection and leakage.
- Loosen anodes one by one.
- Check the diameter of each anode. It must be at least 60% of its original diameter.
- If the diameter is below the minimum, replace the anode. Contact the supplier/manufacturer for new anodes.
- Mount the new anode.
Warranty
5.1 General Warranty
Within 1 year of invoice/commissioning date, Lochinvar Ltd will repair or replace defective assemblies or parts (excluding the tank) due to manufacturing or material defects, subject to verification and sole discretion.
5.2 Tank Warranty
Within 3 years of invoice/commissioning date, if the enamel-lined steel tank leaks due to rust or corrosion on the water side, Lochinvar Ltd will offer to replace the defective vessel with a new one of equivalent size and quality. The warranty period for the replacement vessel will match the remaining period of the original vessel.
5.3 Conditions for Installation and Use
The warranty applies only if:
- Installation strictly follows Lochinvar Ltd instructions and complies with relevant Gas Safety Regulations, Building Regulations, I.E.E. Regulations, local water authority byelaws, gas distributor, and local authority requirements.

- The vessel is used exclusively with drinking water that circulates freely. A separate heat exchanger is mandatory for saline or corrosive water.
- The tank is protected against scaling and lime build-up through periodic maintenance.
- Water temperatures do not exceed the thermostat maximum settings.
- Water pressure and/or heat load do not exceed maximum values on the vessel's rating plate.
- The vessel is installed in a non-corrosive atmosphere or environment.
- The vessel is connected to a protected cold supply arrangement approved by the relevant authority, with sufficient capacity, supplying pressure no greater than the vessel's working pressure, and fitted with an approved temperature and pressure relief valve in accordance with instructions and regulations.
- The vessel is fitted with cathodic protection. If sacrificial anodes show more than 40% reduction in size or pitting, they must be replaced. Check anode ends for localized depletion. Clean anodes covered with particles. New anodes have a 21 mm diameter. Ensure power anodes are functioning correctly.
