Instructions
Set Up
- Set the Time Zone switch to your desired zone (P – Pacific Time, M – Mountain Time, C – Central Time, E – Eastern Time).
- Insert one fresh 1.5V AA battery, noting the correct polarity (+/–).
- Automatic Setting: After battery insertion, hands will quickly advance to 12:00. The clock will then move at a normal rate until it receives the radio signal. Signal reception may take a few minutes to a few days.
- In most cases, the signal is found overnight.
Daylight Savings Time (DST)
If you live in an area that does not observe DST (e.g., Arizona or Indiana), push the DST switch to the OFF position. To reactivate DST, push the switch to ON.
Diagram Description (Figure 1)
Figure 1 illustrates the rear controls of the clock, showing the locations for:
- Manual Set Button (two buttons labeled M.SET)
- Battery Compartment (labeled "Insert Battery Here")
- DST (Daylight Savings Time) On/Off Switch
- Time Zone Switch (labeled for Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern zones)
Manual Time Setting
On rare occasions, the clock may not connect to the radio signal within 24 hours due to signal strength or geographic location. In such cases, the clock can be set manually and will function as a regular quartz wall clock until it acquires the radio signal.
When all hands stop at 12:00, you can advance the time manually. Press and hold either Manual Set (M.SET) button until the correct time is displayed. Once the clock successfully receives the signal, it will automatically adjust to the correct time.
Clock Location Guidelines
The WWVB radio time signal is broadcast by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Fort Collins, CO. The signal can penetrate masonry and wood-frame buildings, and most steel buildings with adequate windows. However, it may not reach rooms in the center of large buildings without windows.
If the signal cannot penetrate your location, use the manual time set button. The clock will automatically synchronize once it receives the signal.
To ensure optimal reception and avoid interference, do not place the clock within 5 feet (1.5 meters) of electronic devices such as televisions, radios, microwaves, computers, other radio-controlled clocks, telephones, or stereos.
Large metal surfaces like aluminum siding, steel counters, or metal cabinets can also affect signal reception.
For the best reception, place the clock on a wall near a window that faces towards Fort Collins, Colorado. Due to the nature of long-wave radio signals, reception may be weaker during the day. It is recommended to install the battery in the late evening for better signal acquisition.
Problems or Difficulties
If the time signal is unavailable, the clock movement will continue searching for a readable signal. If no signal is found, the movement may stop.
To reset the clock: Remove the battery, insert it backwards for 5 seconds, then remove it and insert it correctly. It is recommended to perform this reset after 10:00 PM, as signal quality is generally better during nighttime hours.
Low Battery Function
When the battery is low, the minute hand will advance in 2-second increments. Replace the old battery with a fresh one when this occurs. After installing a new battery, allow the clock to reset itself by receiving the time signal. Never attempt to move the hands manually.
Checking Timekeeping Accuracy
For the exact time, contact the NIST time and frequency service in Fort Collins at 303-499-7111 or visit their website at www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq. If your clock has received the signal and set itself properly, it will display the correct broadcast time.
Daylight Savings Time (DST): If DST is enabled (DST ON), the clock will display DST when the DST signal is received. Otherwise, it will continue to display standard time.
Extreme Temperatures
The clock is designed to operate within a temperature range of 14°F to 122°F (–10°C to 50°C). Temperatures outside this range may affect the clock's performance.
