Sony VPL-XW5000 Video Projector User Guide
Introduction
This document provides a comprehensive user guide for the Sony VPL-XW5000 Video Projector. It covers essential information regarding installation, operation, precautions, and technical specifications to ensure optimal use and safety.
Precautions
On Safety
- Ensure the operating voltage of the unit matches your local power supply.
- In case of liquid or solid objects falling into the cabinet, unplug the unit and have it inspected by qualified personnel.
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if it will not be used for an extended period.
- To disconnect the power cord, pull the plug, not the cord itself.
- The wall outlet should be easily accessible and located near the unit.
- The unit remains connected to the AC power source as long as it is plugged into the wall outlet, even when turned off.
- Do not look directly into the lens while the unit is in use.
- Keep hands and objects away from the ventilation holes as the air emitted is hot.
Preventing Internal Heat Build-up
After turning off the power using the (On/Standby) button, do not disconnect the unit from the wall outlet until the cooling fan has stopped running.
Ventilation
The unit is equipped with ventilation holes. Do not block these holes or place objects near them, as this can lead to internal heat build-up, potentially causing picture degradation or damage to the unit.
Repacking
Save the original shipping carton and packing materials for future shipping needs. Repack the unit as it was originally packed at the factory for maximum protection.
Inspection of Light Source Related Parts
Due to the laser light source, exercise caution and ensure a safe environment when adjusting or inspecting related parts. Consult qualified Sony personnel for assistance.
Leaving Unused for Long Periods
To prevent malfunction or performance degradation from prolonged disuse, periodically turn on and operate the unit.
LCD Projector Characteristics
The LCD projector utilizes high-precision technology. Tiny black or bright points (red, blue, or green) may appear continuously on the screen, which is a normal manufacturing outcome and not a malfunction. Color reproduction may vary slightly between projectors of the same model.
Condensation
Rapid temperature changes can cause condensation inside the projector. If condensation occurs, leave the projector turned on for approximately two hours before use.
Security Notes
- Sony is not liable for damages resulting from failure to implement proper security measures for transmission devices or data leaks.
- When connecting to a network, ensure the network is securely protected. Change access limitation settings via a web browser and set a strong password.
- Avoid browsing other websites while configuring settings. Close the web browser after use.
- Connect to a network via a system with protection functions like a router or firewall.
Medical Devices
The product contains magnets that may interfere with medical devices such as pacemakers. Consult a doctor before use if you use such a device.
Intended Use
Sony is not liable for damages resulting from the use of this unit for purposes other than general home use.
Notes on Installation and Usage
Unsuitable Installation Locations
- Avoid locations near walls that obstruct ventilation. Maintain recommended spacing: 30 cm (11 7/8 inches) on the sides and top, 15 cm (6 inches) at the front and rear.
- Avoid poorly ventilated locations.
- Avoid locations with hot and humid conditions or direct cool/warm air from air conditioners, as this can cause malfunction due to moisture or temperature rise.
- Avoid locations near heat or smoke sensors, as this may cause sensor malfunction.
- Avoid very dusty and extremely smoky locations.
Unsuitable Conditions
- Do not tilt the unit front/rear or left/right. Install on a level surface or ceiling. Tilting can cause uneven color uniformity or trapezoidal image distortion. Ensure the lens is parallel to the screen.
- When installing at high altitudes (above 1,000 m / 3,280 ft), set the "High Altitude Mode" in the Setup menu to prevent potential adverse effects on components.
- For ceiling installations, consult qualified Sony personnel. Use a safety wire to prevent the unit from falling. Ensure the cabinet cover is securely fastened.
Preparing
Checking Supplied Accessories
Verify the carton contains the following items:
- Remote control RM-PJ28 (1)
- Size AA (R6) batteries (2)
- Lens cap (1)
- AC power cord (1)
- Setup Guide (this manual)
Inserting Batteries into the Remote Control
Open the battery compartment by pushing and sliding the cover. Insert the batteries, noting the correct polarity (side first).
Installing the Unit
- Position the unit so the lens is parallel to the screen.
- Connect the AC power cord to the unit and plug it into a wall outlet. The ON/STANDBY indicator may blink orange initially; this is normal. Wait until it stops blinking and remains lit in red.
- Press the (On/Standby) button to turn on the unit.
- Press the LENS button or PATTERN button to display a test signal for adjustments.
Adjusting Picture Position and Focus
- Open the lid on the top of the unit.
- Use the lens shift dials to adjust the picture position horizontally and vertically.
- Attach the lid back to its original position. Be cautious when opening/closing the lid and operating the dials, especially during ceiling installation, to prevent the lid from falling.
- Adjust the picture size using the zoom lever.
- Adjust the focus using the focus ring.
Adjusting Tilt
If the unit is installed on an uneven surface, use the adjustable front feet to level the unit. Tilting the unit may distort the projected image into a trapezoidal shape.
Connecting the Unit
Before making connections:
- Turn off all connected devices.
- Use appropriate cables for each connection.
- Ensure cable plugs are inserted firmly to maintain performance and prevent malfunctions. Grip the plug, not the cable, when unplugging.
- Refer to the instruction manuals of connected devices for more information.
Connection Diagram:
Connect the video signal source (e.g., Computer, AV amplifier) to the unit's HDMI input using a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Ensure the cable has the specified logo.
For network monitoring and control, access the projector's Setup page via a web browser and enable the desired control protocol.
Projecting the Picture
- Turn on the unit and the connected device.
- Press INPUT to display the input palette.
- Select the desired input source.
Turning Off the Power
- Press the (On/Standby) button. The message "POWER OFF?" appears.
- Press the (On/Standby) button again before the message disappears to initiate shutdown. The ON/STANDBY indicator will flash green while the fan cools the unit.
- The fan stops, and the ON/STANDBY indicator turns red. The unit is now completely off. You can disconnect the AC power cord.
Note: Never disconnect the AC power cord while the indicator is flashing.
Tip: You can also turn off the unit by holding the (On/Standby) button for about 1 second.
