Materials and Tools Needed:
- Outdoor Furniture Wax
- #8 Pan Head Robertson Square Socket 1½" Screw
- 1/8" Drill Bit
- 24 x Medium Hive Frames (Standard Size: 19" x 9")
- 3 x Queen Excluders (Standard Size: 16" x 20")
- Drill
- Table Saw
- Chop Saw
IMPORTANT: Wear proper safety gear when operating machinery ⚠️.
Step 1: Prepare the IVAR Cabinet
Remove shelves, shelf pins, and doors. Set them aside.
Step 2: Drill Ventilation Holes
Drill ventilation holes through the bottom 2 shelf pin holes on both sides near the rear of the cabinet.
Step 3: Apply Wax
Apply natural outdoor furniture wax to the exterior of the IVAR cabinet, including the doors.
Step 4: Cut Shelves
Shelf 1 (18" x 30"):
- Cut straights using a table saw.
- Result: Four 18" x 6" pieces.
Shelf 2 (18" x 30"):
- Cut straights using a table saw.
- Cut angles using a chop saw.
- Result: Three 18" x 6" pieces and six 5" x 5" triangular pieces.
Step 5: Reassemble Shelves
Reassemble shelves as shown, leaving 12" between brackets. This creates 6 modified shelf units.
Step 6: Mount Shelves
Measure, mount, and drill shelves as shown. Mount the top shelves under the door hinges. The shelf spacing should be approximately 9½", 9½", and 9" from top to bottom.
Step 7: Secure Unit to Wall
Use IVAR mounting brackets (part #102646 and #108458) to secure the unit to an exterior wall.
Step 8: Add Hive Frames and Queen Excluders
Hang 24 hive frames and place 3 queen excluders on all levels of shelving.
Step 9: Prepare Doors for Bee Entry
For bee entry, cut pieces off each door as shown. A 3/4" x 3/4" corner should be removed from each door.
Step 10: Reattach Doors
Reattach doors using hinges. Close and fasten doors shut with screws.
