Features
The SMR multiplexer enables the connection between a PC or PLC and JBC stations by consolidating one serial communication port to manage two JBC Devices. This is particularly useful for automation systems.
Supported JBC Devices include:
- UCR - Control Unit for Automation (serial communication RS-232*)
- SFR - Solder Feeder for Robot (serial communication RS-232*)
*Refer to the corresponding “Communication Protocol” document available at www.jbctools.com/jbcsoftware.html for detailed information.
Device Indicators and Connectors:
The SMR unit features several indicators and connectors:
- DB9 Connector (Robot/PC): For connection to the PC or robot controller.
- Communications Connectors: For connecting JBC Devices (e.g., UCR, SFR).
- Power Supply Connector: For connecting the AC adapter.
- Blue LED (Power ON): Indicates that the unit is powered.
- Green LED (PC Activity): Blinks when the PC sends data to the stations.
- Green LED (JBC Device Activity): Blinks when a connected JBC device (Station 1 or Station 2) is active or responding.
- Green LED (JBC Device 2 Activity): Specifically indicates activity from Station 2.
Connection Diagram
The SMR serves as a connection module for automation processes. The diagram illustrates the setup:
- The AC Adapter (1) provides power to the SMR Multiplexer for Robot (7).
- A DB9M-DB9F cable (2) connects the SMR to the PC/PLC serial port.
- Two M8F-M8M 5V cables (3) connect the SMR to two JBC Devices, such as the UCR Control Unit (4) and the SFR Solder Feeder for Robot (5).
- The SMR unit itself has indicators labeled 'PC' (6) and 'DC IN'.
Installation
- Connect the SMR to the supplied AC adapter (1). The 'DC IN' indicator light on the SMR should illuminate.
- Connect the PC/PLC serial port's DB9 male connector to the SMR using the DB9 cable (2).
- Connect two JBC Devices (e.g., UCR Control Unit (4) and SFR Solder Feeder for Robot (5)) to the SMR using the M8F-M8M 5V 3M cables (3).
- Ensure that the protocol settings for both connected JBC devices are configured as “WITH ADDRESS” and that each device has a unique address. The default address values are 01 for the UCR and 10 for the SFR.
LED Indicators
The indicator lights for STATION 1, STATION 2, and PC are valuable for debugging communication issues:
- PC Indicator Light (6): This LED blinks every time the PC sends data bytes to the connected stations. If this LED does not blink, verify that the correct port number is assigned in the communication software.
- Station Indicator Light (7): The STATION 1 and STATION 2 lights blink when the JBC devices respond to a frame from the PC. If these lights do not blink, check if the device address settings are correctly defined.
If a device address is unknown, JBC recommends downloading the Robot Control Software* and utilizing its “Discovery Connected Device” function.

Maintenance
- Before performing any maintenance, always allow the equipment to cool down completely.
- Periodically inspect all cables and connections for wear or damage.
- Replace any defective or damaged parts exclusively with original JBC spare parts.
- Repairs should only be carried out by JBC or authorized technical service personnel.
Safety Precautions
⚠️ It is imperative to follow safety guidelines to prevent electric shock, injury, fire, or explosion.
- Do not use the device for purposes other than its intended application.
- The AC Adapter must be plugged into approved electrical bases. When unplugging the adapter, hold the plug itself, not the wire.
- Ensure that the power supply is disconnected before attempting to change any spare part.
- Maintain a clean and tidy workplace. Wear appropriate protection glasses and gloves when working to avoid personal injury.
Warranty
JBC provides a 2-year warranty that covers this equipment against all manufacturing defects, including the replacement of defective parts and labor. The warranty does not cover product wear or misuse. For the warranty to be valid, the equipment must be returned, with postage paid, to the dealer where it was originally purchased.
Recycling Information
This product should not be disposed of with general household waste. In accordance with the European directive 2012/19/EU, electronic equipment at the end of its life must be collected and returned to an authorized recycling facility.
Compliance Marks: CE, EAC
