Mercury Hydro-Pneumatic Presses

Brief Description

The "MERCURY" "N" series of Hydro-Pneumatic Presses combines the advantages of efficient, low-cost pneumatics to achieve the large output forces associated with hydraulics. The system operates on normal compressed air pressure of 5 bar, using standard pneumatic controls, thus eliminating the need for expensive hydraulic power packs and associated control equipment. The system comprises a hydraulic cylinder, an air-to-oil intensifier, and an oil reservoir, integrated into a compact unit. The output ram approaches the workpiece at rapid speed (adjustable) under low pressure (low force) compressed air. Upon touching the workpiece, the intensifier is automatically energized via a directional control valve, resulting in a high-pressure (high force) stroke up to a maximum of 24 mm. The ram retracts rapidly at low pressure upon completion of the work cycle.

Salient Features of "N" Series Hydro-Pneumatic Presses

  • Very low air consumption, offering energy savings of up to 80% over equivalent pneumatic cylinders and 50% over equivalent hydraulic systems. Speed of operation is also significantly higher than standard pneumatic or hydraulic systems.
  • Compact cylinder design, mountable in any position.
  • Compact, lightweight press frames, suitable for mounting on light work tables.
  • Simple design for easy maintenance.
  • High stroke frequency due to a shorter oil path between the oil reservoir and the output hydraulic cylinder.
  • Infinitely adjustable force and speed.
  • Rapid pneumatically operated approach and return strokes. The "N" Series offers a return force larger than the approach force, enabling the loading of heavier tools for respective tonnages.
  • Absolute separation of air and oil chambers, achieved via bleed holes between pneumatic and hydraulic seals. This prevents air from mixing with hydraulic oil in case of pneumatic seal failure, and allows oil to escape through its bleed hole in case of hydraulic seal failure, indicating the need for seal replacement before total breakdown.

Advantages of Hydro-pneumatic Presses

  • Utilizes compressed air as the power source, leading to reliable and inexpensive components and piping. It completely eliminates the need for expensive hydraulic components and large oil tanks.
  • Fast response due to the use of compressed air for rapid approach and retraction.
  • Compact and lightweight, mountable on a tabletop, saving floor space typically occupied by hydraulic power packs.
  • Saves up to 50% in energy input compared to fully pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and up to 70% in cost compared to hydraulic systems.
  • Easy maintenance due to simple pneumatic elements and sealing components.

Applications

Mercury low-cost hydro-pneumatic presses are ideal replacements for expensive hydraulic presses in various applications such as riveting, forming, clamping, bending, straightening, marking, and punching. They are also used for pressure testing machines, valve testing machines, paper mill hydraulics, hydra-intensifiers, and cylinders and systems.

Types of Industry where these presses are mainly used

Sheet Metal Work: Riveting, Forming, Clamping, Bending, Marking, Punching, Folding, Straightening etc. Also used for spreading of bearing cages, assembly operations in bearing industries, automobile industries, gas lighter and kitchen ware appliance manufacturing plants, electrical switches, switch gears, rubber parts, shaft straightening applications, bush pressing applications, and many more.

Operator's Safety

The press is operated via a micro-processor based control card in the electrical panel for operator safety. This is referred to as True, Non Tie down, Interlocked Two-hand safety operation.

Key Features & Systems

Auto-cycling & Parking Features

The press can be set for up to 9 power strokes in sequence with an auto-cycling feature in the electrical control panel, removing limitations on power stroke travel. The optional parking feature increases operating frequency by limiting the ram's reversal travel up to the available power stroke.

Auto-Lube System

The Auto Lubrication feature enhances press reliability. After a set number of cycles (via PCB jumper), the auto-lube solenoid activates a built-in pump to inject approximately 8 drops of oil under high pressure, ensuring complete lubrication of pneumatic components. This system provides positive lubrication independent of air flow volume, unlike standard lubricators.

Optional Features

  • Automatic Lubrication System
  • Low Oil Level Sensor System
  • Auto Cycling of Power Stroke
  • Power Stroke Depth Control
  • Stroke Counter
  • Low Oil Level Sensing (Standard Feature)
  • Low Energy System
  • Low Force Sensing
  • Dual Force Circuit
  • Job Ejection
  • Parking Feature
  • Continuous Cycling
