NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Piccolo XS User Manual
This manual provides instructions for the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Piccolo XS coffee machine.
1. Safety Precautions
Read all instructions and keep these safety instructions. Any misuse of the appliance may result in injury. The manufacturer is not responsible for injuries due to inappropriate use or failure to comply with instructions. The guarantee does not cover appliances that do not work properly due to lack of maintenance or descaling.
Intended Use
This appliance is intended for household use only. It is not intended for use in staff kitchen areas, farm houses, hotels, motels, residential type environments, or bed and breakfast environments. It is designed for domestic use indoors at altitudes below 3400 meters.
Electrical Power Supply
- Connect only to a mains power socket with an earth connection. Ensure mains voltage matches the rating plate.
- Do not immerse the power cord, plugs, or appliance in water or other liquid. Avoid spillage on the plug. Never touch the power cord with wet hands.
- In case of emergency, remove the plug immediately. Unplug when not in use.
- To disconnect, remove the plug by hand, not by pulling the cord.
- Keep the cord away from hot surfaces or sharp edges. Avoid tripping hazards.
- Do not operate with a damaged cord or plug. If damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or a qualified service agent.
- Do not operate if the appliance malfunctions or is damaged. Return to an authorized service facility.
- If the mains power socket does not match the plug, have it replaced by an authorized service center.
Conditions of Use
- Always use on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface away from heat sources or water splashes.
- Do not use without the drip tray and drip grid, unless using a very tall mug. Do not use for hot water preparation.
- Never turn the machine upside down.
- Do not use accessory attachments not recommended by the manufacturer.
- Do not place near hot gas or electric burners, or in a heated oven.
- Do not put fingers under the outlet during beverage preparation.
- Do not touch the injector of the machine head.
- Never carry the appliance by the extraction head.
- The capsule holder contains a magnet. Keep away from credit cards, USB drives, video tapes, televisions, computer monitors, mechanical clocks, hearing aids, and loud speakers.
- Do not turn off the appliance during descaling. Rinse the water tank and clean the appliance afterward.
- If away for prolonged periods, empty, clean, and unplug the appliance. Rinse before reuse.
- Use only NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto capsules designed for the machine for optimal results. Capsules are single-use.
- Do not remove hot capsules by hand; use the capsule holder handle.
- Always insert the capsule holder to prepare a beverage. The machine will not work without it. Do not pull out the capsule holder before the indicator stops blinking.
- Scalding may occur if the locking handle is opened during brewing. Do not open the handle before the lights stop flashing.
- Always fill the water tank with fresh drinking water.
- After use, remove the capsule and clean the capsule holder. Empty and clean the drip tray and capsule bin daily. Food allergy sufferers should rinse the appliance according to cleaning procedures.
Children
- Keep the appliance and cord out of reach of children under 8 years. Children must not play with the appliance.
- Children aged 8 and above, and persons with reduced capabilities, can use the appliance if supervised or instructed on safe use and hazards.
- The appliance is not intended for use by children or persons with reduced capabilities unless supervised by a responsible adult.
- Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance.
- Cleaning and maintenance should only be done by children over 8 years old under adult supervision.
- Children should not use the appliance as a toy.
Maintenance
- Unplug before cleaning. Allow to cool before removing parts or cleaning.
- Never clean the appliance wet or immerse it in fluid. Never clean with running water.
- Do not use detergents. Clean with soft sponges/brushes. The water tank should be cleaned with a food-safe brush.
- Any operation, cleaning, or care other than normal use must be done by authorized after-sales service centers. Do not dismantle the appliance or insert anything into openings.
- To reduce fire/electric shock risk, do not remove the cover. No user-serviceable parts inside. Repairs must be done by authorized personnel.

Recycling
Packaging is recyclable. Contact your local council for recycling program information. The appliance contains valuable materials that can be recovered or recycled. For European markets: Dispose of at a local civic waste collection point or approved service center according to European Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE).
2. Machine Overview

Economy Mode: The machine enters eco-mode after 1 minute of non-usage upon extraction, or 5 minutes upon switch-on if no extraction. It consumes 0.27 Wh in eco-mode.

3. Beverage Examples
Adjust the drip tray position and choose hot or cold for your beverage.
Espresso (1 capsule)
Preparation time: 15 seconds.
Cappuccino (2 capsules)
Capsule 1: 30 seconds. Capsule 2: 10 seconds. Total volume: 200 ml + 40 ml.
Chococcino (2 capsules)
Capsule 1: 20 seconds. Capsule 2: 20 seconds. Total volume: 100 ml + 110 ml.
Cappuccino Ice (2 capsules)
Capsule 1: 25 seconds. Capsule 2: 15 seconds. Total volume: 30 g + 125 ml.
4. Recommendations for Safe Use
- Never add hot water to the water tank. Use only drinking water for rinsing and beverage preparation.
- Always keep the machine upright.
- After preparation, the indicator light blinks red for about 5 seconds. Do not open the locking handle during this time.
- Do not touch the plug or machine with wet hands.
- Never use a wet sponge. Use a soft damp cloth to clean the top of the machine.
- Do not touch used capsules after preparation as they are hot and pose a burn risk.
- Never touch the injector with your finger.
- Do not use the rinsing tool for tea or hot water preparation.
- If the machine is left unused for more than 2 days: Empty the water tank, rinse it, refill with fresh drinking water, and insert it. Before reuse, rinse the machine according to cleaning instructions (Section 7, starting from step 4 to step 8).
5. First Use
5.1 How to Start the Machine
- Ensure the selection lever is in the "STOP" position. Verify the mains voltage matches the machine's requirements. Connect the power plug to the mains socket.
- Open the locking handle and pull out the capsule holder.
- The machine switches on automatically. The indicator light blinks red while heating (approx. 40 seconds), then turns steady green. The machine is ready.
5.2 First Use Rinsing
- Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water, insert it back into the machine, and remove the drip tray.
- Open the locking handle, place the rinsing tool into the capsule holder, and insert the capsule holder back into the machine. Place a large empty container under the coffee outlet.
- Close the locking handle.
- Push the selection lever to the "COLD" position. The machine starts rinsing.
- After approximately 60 seconds, push the selection lever to the "STOP" position. The indicator light blinks red for about 5 seconds.
- Push the selection lever to the "HOT" position. The machine starts rinsing.
- After approximately 60 seconds, push the selection lever to the "STOP" position.
- Open the locking handle, pull out the capsule holder, remove the rinsing tool, and reinsert the capsule holder.
- Empty the container. Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water, insert it, and reinsert the drip tray. The machine is now ready for use.
6. Preparing a Beverage
6.1 One Capsule (e.g., Lungo)
- Adjust the drip tray position. Place a cup of the correct size on the drip tray. Check the water tank for sufficient fresh drinking water.
- Open the locking handle and pull out the capsule holder. The machine automatically switches on. The indicator light blinks red while heating (approx. 40 seconds) and then turns steady green.
- Ensure the rinsing tool is not inside. Insert the capsule into the capsule holder. Insert the capsule holder back into the machine and close the locking handle.
- Push the selection lever to the "HOT" or "COLD" position as recommended on the capsule packaging. Beverage preparation begins.
- Stay with the machine during preparation. When the desired level is reached, push the selection lever to the "STOP" position to stop preparation.
- After preparation, the indicator light blinks red for a few seconds, then turns steady green. Do not open the locking handle during this time.
- When the indicator light is steady green, open the locking handle and remove the cup from the drip tray.
- Pull out the capsule holder, remove the used capsule, and dispose of it in a dustbin.
- Rinse the capsule holder with fresh drinking water from both sides, dry it, and reinsert it into the machine. Enjoy your beverage!
6.2 Two Capsules (e.g., Cappuccino)
- Adjust the drip tray position. Place a cup of the correct size on the drip tray. Check the water tank for sufficient fresh drinking water.
- Open the locking handle and pull out the capsule holder. The machine automatically switches on. The indicator light blinks red while heating (approx. 40 seconds) and then turns steady green.
- Ensure the rinsing tool is not inside. Insert the first capsule into the capsule holder. Insert the capsule holder back into the machine and close the locking handle.
- Push the selection lever to the "HOT" or "COLD" position as recommended on the capsule packaging. Beverage preparation begins.

- Stay with the machine during preparation. When the desired level is reached, push the selection lever to the "STOP" position to stop preparation.
- After preparation, the indicator light blinks red for a few seconds, then turns steady green. Do not open the locking handle during this time.
- When the indicator light is steady green, open the locking handle and remove the cup from the drip tray.
- Rinse the capsule holder with fresh drinking water from both sides, dry it, and reinsert it into the machine. Enjoy your beverage!
7. Cleaning
- Rinse and clean the water tank with a food-safe brush and washing-up liquid. Refill with fresh drinking water and insert it. The water tank is not dishwasher proof.
- Rinse the drip tray and rinsing tool with fresh drinking water. Clean the drip tray with a food-safe brush or wash in a dishwasher.
- Clean the capsule holder on both sides with washing-up liquid and fresh drinking water, or wash in a dishwasher. Dry it. Clean the machine head around the injector with a soft damp cloth.
- Open the locking handle, place the rinsing tool into the capsule holder, and insert the capsule holder into the machine. Close the locking handle. Remove the drip tray and place an empty container under the coffee outlet.
- The machine switches on automatically. The indicator light blinks red while heating (approx. 40 seconds) and then turns steady green.
- Push the selection lever to the "HOT" position. The machine starts rinsing.
- After approximately 60 seconds, push the selection lever to the "STOP" position. Remove and empty the container. Warning: Hot water! Handle with care!
- Open the locking handle, pull out the capsule holder, remove the rinsing tool, and reinsert the capsule holder. If there is any water in the tank, remove it.
- Unplug the power plug. Clean the machine with a soft damp cloth and dry it with a soft dry cloth.
8. Descaling (At Least Every 3-4 Months)
When to descale: The indicator light changes from steady green to steady orange, beverage flow is slow, or the beverage is cooler than usual.
- Use NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto liquid descaler. Order via website or hotline.
- Do not use vinegar for descaling.
- Avoid contact of descaling liquid with any part of the machine.
- If any water is in the tank, remove it. Mix 0.5 L of fresh drinking water with the descaler in a measuring cup. Pour the solution into the water tank and insert it into the machine.
- Open the locking handle, place the rinsing tool in the capsule holder, and insert the capsule holder. Close the locking handle. Remove the drip tray and place an empty container under the coffee outlet.
- Push the selection lever to the "HOT" position. The machine starts descaling.
- Check when the water tank is empty. Push the selection lever to the "STOP" position. The indicator lights turn steady green when descaling is finished.
- Empty and clean the container. Rinse and clean the water tank with a food-safe brush and washing-up liquid. Refill with fresh drinking water and insert it into the machine.
- Push the selection lever to the "HOT" position. The machine starts rinsing.
- Check when the water tank is empty. Push the selection lever to the "STOP" position.
- Push the selection lever to the "COLD" position. The machine starts rinsing.
- Check when the water tank is empty. Push the selection lever to the "STOP" position.
- Open the locking handle, pull out the capsule holder, remove the rinsing tool, and rinse the capsule holder with fresh drinking water. Reinsert the capsule holder.
- Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water, insert it, clean the machine with a soft damp cloth, and dry it.
9. Troubleshooting
9.1 Indicator Light Turned to Orange Colour
The machine needs to be descaled. Follow instructions in Section 8.
9.2 No Liquid Comes Out – No Water in Water Tank?
The machine makes a loud noise, but no liquid comes out. The water tank may be empty.
- Push the selection lever to the "STOP" position.
- Check if the water tank contains enough fresh drinking water. If not, refill and push the selection lever to "HOT" or "COLD" to continue. If the tank is full, check sections 9.3 and 9.4.
9.3 No Liquid Comes Out – Capsule Blocked?
No liquid comes out; the capsule may be blocked and under pressure.
- Push the selection lever to "STOP". Open the locking handle. If it cannot be opened, wait 20 minutes and try again.
- If the locking handle opens, proceed to step 3. If not, unplug the machine and call the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto hotline.
- Do not drink the coffee! Put the used capsule in the dustbin.
- Try operating the machine without a capsule. If water flows, the issue was with the capsule. Use a different capsule. If no water flows, proceed to 9.4 (Injector Blocked).
9.4 No Liquid Comes Out – Injector Blocked?
No liquid comes out; the injector may be blocked and under pressure.
- Remove the water tank and take out the cleaning needle. Keep the needle out of reach of children.
- Unplug the power plug. Tilt the machine for better access to the injector. Never touch the injector with your finger. Clean the injector with the cleaning needle. Follow descaling instructions (Section 8).
9.5 Various
- Machine cannot be switched on: Check if the power plug is correctly plugged in. Check your electricity supply. If the problem persists, call the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto hotline.
- Beverage is splashing out of coffee outlet: Push the selection lever to "STOP". Do not drink the coffee. Pull out the capsule holder, put the used capsule in the dustbin. Clean the machine surface around the injector needle. Insert a new capsule and reinsert the holder.
- Beverage comes out slower than usual (even in droplets): Try another capsule. If the problem persists, the machine needs descaling.
- Indicator light flashes red fast: Switch off and unplug the machine for 20 minutes. Remove the capsule holder, discard the capsule. Plug in and switch on the machine. If the light still flashes red, call the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto hotline.
- Water accumulates underneath or around the machine: Clear water leaks around the capsule holder during preparation. Unplug the power plug! Call the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto hotline or visit the website.
- Water is splashing out of the coffee outlet during rinsing or descaling: Put the rinsing tool into the capsule holder and insert the capsule holder into the machine.
