Kit Description

The RM7 rackmount kit is a collection of parts that, once installed, configure the 7 Series Performance Oscilloscope for mounting into a standard 19-inch wide equipment rack. The slides will also fit racks of 20-36 inch depth.

Assembly

Assemble the RM7 rackmount kit parts as described here. The kit parts are noted in the procedure with the associated number shown in the kit parts diagram.

  1. Remove all items from the box and compare to parts list.
  2. Gather the tools needed to assemble the rack. (See Recommended tools.)
  3. Remove the four side handles from the instrument (two per side). Use a T25 Torx driver to remove the 4 screws that secure each handle to the instrument. Set the screws and handles aside for later.
  4. Set the rack tray (5) upside down on a bench.
  5. Store the handles under the rackmount tray:
    1. Remove the two handle storage brackets (8) from the tray by removing the six nuts using a 3/8 inch nut driver.
    2. Mount two instrument handles to each handle storage bracket, ensuring that the bracket threads are opposite the handle.
    3. Re-attach the handle storage brackets to the underside of the rackmount tray using the six nuts.
  6. Remove the two side rails from the sides of the tray (4):
    1. Cut the tie-wraps that hold the rails in place for shipping.
    2. Push the rack slides back until they click into the tray tabs.
    3. Depress the tab to release and unlock the slide.
    4. Remove the slide.
  7. Install the two side rails into the rack:
    1. Orient the rail in the rack so that the short adjustable bracket on the rail is at the front of the rack.
    2. Use an 11/32 socket driver and a Phillips screw driver to loosen the nuts on the rail assembly and adjust the rail length to fit the rack depth.
    3. If the rack is >24 inches, remove one or two of the front-most screws on the rail. This allows you to extend the rail beyond 24 inches. If the rail is <24 in., proceed to step 7d.
    4. Use the provided 10-32 in. screws to secure the front and rear rail ends to the rack. Do not fully tighten them. They will be tightened after placing the tray into the rack in step 8.
    5. Use an 11/32 socket driver and a Phillips screw driver to tighten the nuts on the rail sides, fixing the rail length.
  8. Install the tray into the rack:
    1. Place the tray into the rails. You will hear the tabs in the rails click when it is installed.
    2. Depress the rail tabs to unlock the tray and slide the tray all the way into the rack.

      WARNING: Use a screw driver to depress the rail tabs. Finger pinch hazard. Ensure your fingers do not get caught in the rail.

    3. Tighten the four 10-32 screws that attach the rail to the rear of the rack.
    4. Slide the tray halfway out, then tighten the 10-32 screws that secure the rails to the front of the rack.
    5. Slide the tray in and out to ensure it slides smoothly. Adjust the rails as needed.

Installation

Install the 7 Series Performance Oscilloscope into the RM7 assembly and instrument rack. This procedure explains how to install the instrument into the rack with the RM7 tray assembly already installed.

WARNING: Personal injury can occur when lifting and moving the instrument into the rack. The instrument is heavy. Use a 2 person lift to move the instrument.

WARNING: Finger pinch hazard. Ensure your fingers do not get caught between the instrument and the tray when placing the instrument into the tray assembly. The instrument is heavy and can cause injury to the fingers if they are caught between the instrument and the tray.

WARNING: Tip hazard. Secure the rack against tipping. Do not leave the rails fully extended with the instrument loaded. The instrument is heavy and can tip the rack if the rack is not fully secured against tipping.

  1. Install the top bracket (7) onto the instrument:
    1. Place the top bracket over the top of the instrument and align it with the screw holes on either side. You will need to flex the bracket to get it to fit on the instrument.
    2. Secure the bracket to the instrument with four M5 screws using a 3 mm Hex key.
  2. Slide out the secured tray assembly from the rack until it clicks. This means it is fully extended.
  3. Place the instrument onto the tray:
    1. Note the slots in the tray for the instrument feet.
    2. Lift the instrument with two people.
    3. Tip the display end up slightly and carefully place the instrument onto the tray, rear feet first. The instrument feet will fit into the tray slots.
    4. Lower the front of the instrument slowly and adjust grip to avoid pinching fingers.
  4. Secure the instrument to the tray from the bottom using four M5 screws.
  5. Depress the rail tabs to unlock the tray and slide the instrument all the way into the rack.

    WARNING: Use a screw driver to depress the rail tabs. Finger pinch hazard. Ensure your fingers do not get caught in the rail.

  6. Secure the instrument to the rack:
    1. Secure the top brackets to the rack using four 10-32 screws.
    2. Secure the tray to the rack using two 10-32 screws.
  7. Ensure adequate ventilation when the instrument is in the rack as follows:
    1. 60 mm of clearance for the side inlets.
    2. ≥ 27 mm of clearance in the rear fan exhaust area.
    3. 20 mm of clearance for the front bottom inlet on the bottom of the instrument.
    Ensure the front rack venting is not blocked and that the ambient temperature inside the rack near the air inlets on both sides and the bottom of the instrument does not exceed 40 °C.

    CAUTION: Risk of instrument damage if the instrument air inlets or front rack venting are blocked. Ensure adequate ventilation when the instrument is in a rack and that the front rack venting is not blocked. Ensure the ambient temperature inside the rack near the air inlets on both sides and the bottom of the instrument does not exceed 40 °C.
