Foreword

This manual has been prepared to acquaint users with the general aspects of installation, operation, and maintenance of the crane drive. Robbins & Myers expresses appreciation for the purchase and highlights the advantages of advance engineering, superior workmanship, and high-quality materials. Proper installation is emphasized as crucial for the unit's ultimate performance. Users are advised to study the instructions carefully, observe all precautions to prolong the unit's life, and keep the manual readily accessible.

Mounting and Lubrication

Mounting

The Robbins & Myers Crane Drive may be mounted in either a vertical or horizontal position.

Lubrication

Before use, oil must be added to the gearcase to the level indicated in the dimension drawings. A good commercial grade 30 weight motor oil is recommended. Approximately 2 quarts of oil are needed for horizontal mounting, and 3 quarts for vertical mounting.

Dimensions and Specifications

Dimensional Drawing

A diagram illustrates the overall dimensions and mounting configuration of the Type SM Crane Drive. It shows a side view of the gearcase, motor, and coupling assembly. Key features include a junction box, cross shaft coupling, and the gear case itself. Dimensions such as approximate height (21 inches), length (13½ inches), and distance to the brake cover (4½ inches) are marked. A recommended bearing location is indicated. The diagram also details mounting points and specifies locations for oil fill, oil drain, and oil level checks, particularly for the horizontal mounting position. A note clarifies that for vertical mounting, the motor is positioned beneath the cross shaft to ensure proper lubrication.

Brake System

Brake Adjustment

All brakes are set at the factory for average conditions. Adjustment is possible to suit particular applications.

To adjust brake torque, compress the spring by adjusting nut 'A' and lock with the jam nut.

To adjust for lining wear, set the air gap at 0.031 inches (1/32") by adjusting nut 'B' and lock the armature plate securely with the jam nut.

Important: Recheck air gap to ensure at least 0.031" is present. For maximum life and performance, adjustments should be made when the air gap exceeds this value. The friction disc should be replaced when its thickness is reduced.

Brake Assembly Diagram

A cross-section diagram of the brake assembly shows the 'E' frame assembly, the armature plate, and the air gap between them. The brake mechanism includes a spring and adjusting nuts labeled 'A' and 'B'. An arrow pointing right indicates the direction to move nut 'A' to increase torque and provide a quicker stop. An arrow pointing left indicates the direction to move nut 'A' to reduce torque and provide a smoother stop. A note advises applying Loctite sealant to the threads of the brake studs during final assembly.

Coupling

Robbins & Myers crane drives are provided with both direct drive and fluid drive couplings.

Direct Drive Coupling

A direct drive coupling connects the motor to the gearcase.

Fluid Drive Coupling

A dry fluid coupling provides a cushioned start to minimize load swinging. The cushioning effect can be adjusted by altering the amount of dry fluid.

The coupling is shipped with sufficient fluid for average conditions. Additional dry fluid is provided for adjustment.

Adjusting Fluid Level

If your unit starts too fast: Remove some dry liquid for a smoother start. Do not remove so much that the coupling slips more than 5 seconds during starting, as this can cause overheating and damage.

If your unit starts too slowly: Add dry fluid to the coupling to achieve speed and stop slipping in less than 5 seconds.

To change the amount of fluid, loosen the nut, remove the filler plug, and replace the plug securely before operating.

Fluid Coupling Filler Plug

An illustration shows the filler plug location on the fluid coupling, labeled 'FILL HERE', and identifies the plug as 'FILLER PLUG 6 C'.

Fluid Change and Lubrication

Change Fluid Once a Year: Dry fluid loses effectiveness over time. Replace the fluid annually. Dry fluid is available in plastic vials (1 lb. 2 ounce bottle for 6 C coupling).

Lubrication: The coupling is lubricated at the factory and requires no further lubrication. Do not apply oil or grease to the fluid charge.

Center drive units not mounted on Robbins and Myers cranes or hoists are shipped without fluid. A full bottle of dry fluid is included with each coupling. Add fluid according to instructions for starting too fast or too slowly.
