Before You Start
Tools required: #2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx wrench (included), and other tools depending on the mounting arrangement. This guide assumes the inclusion of the HALO Installation Guide.
Location
The HALO Surface Mount should be located on the ceiling. Refer to the main installation guide for specific placement recommendations. The HALO Surface Mount can be attached directly to a ceiling, mounted to a standard electrical box, or secured to a ½” NPT down pole. For direct surface mounting, wiring can be done using WireMold B1/V500 or BWH1/V700 surface conduits, or with standard ½” electrical conduit using an available adapter.
Installation with Through-Surface Wiring
Figure-1 shows the general arrangement of the Surface Mount, wiring, and screw anchors.
Figure-1: Illustrates the general arrangement of the Surface Mount, wiring, and screw anchors.
Referring to Figure-2, push out the center punch-out to allow wiring to pass through (indicated by a large red circle in the original diagram).
Figure-2: A top-down view of the HALO Surface Mount base, showing four primary mounting holes and a central punch-out for wiring. Smaller holes around the perimeter are for screw anchors.
Using the Surface Mounting unit as a template, mark the large and small holes (four in total) on the desired surface. Obtain four screw anchors in #6 or #8 size.
Using suitable tools, create the marked holes in the surface for the four anchors and the center wire way.
Bring the connectorized shielded network connection through the hole and allow it to dangle.
If relay connections are involved, route the wiring along with the network wire.
Install the four screw anchors in the surface, run the network wire through the center hole, and use four screws to mount the Surface Mount to the surface.
Connect the network cable and carefully insert the HALO unit into the Surface Mount housing, taking care not to damage the cable. Rotate the HALO unit counterclockwise until it engages with the rotation stops in the Surface Mount housing. Complete the installation and testing in accordance with the HALO Installation Guide.
Install with Wiremold V500 Surface Conduit
Remove the side punch-out from the Surface Mount.
Install the Surface Mount on the ceiling using four screw anchors, as described in the "Through-Surface Wiring" section.
Insert V500 conduit into the provided slot (punched-out) in the Surface Mount.
Figure-3: A side view illustrating the surface mount attached to a ceiling, with Wiremold V500 conduit entering through a side punch-out.
Install and connect the shielded Ethernet cable for data and power.
Connect the network cable and carefully insert the HALO unit into the Surface Mount housing, taking care not to damage the cable. Rotate the HALO unit counterclockwise until it engages with the rotation stops in the Surface Mount housing. Complete the installation and testing in accordance with the standard HALO Installation Guide.
Larger WireMold V700 conduit may be used by manually enlarging the side punch-out to the outer marking using a file or Dremel cutter.
Install on Ceiling Drop Pole
Remove the round center punch-out from the Surface Mount.
Install a ½” NPT (galvanized or black pipe) ceiling drop pole. This is typically required for a nominal 8 to 10 foot height from the floor.
Route the shielded Ethernet cable down through the pole and install a shielded RJ-45 plug. Leave sufficient service loop to attach the HALO unit later.
Figure-4: A side view showing the surface mount attached to a ½” NPT ceiling drop pole. The Ethernet cable is routed down through the pole and connects to the mount, which is secured with washers and locking nuts.
Install the Surface Mount onto the ½” NPT pole using two ½” by ¾” washers and two ½” NPT locking ring nuts.
Connect the network cable and carefully insert the HALO unit into the Surface Mount housing, taking care not to damage the cable. Rotate the HALO unit counterclockwise until it engages with the rotation stops in the Surface Mount Adapter housing. Complete the installation and testing in accordance with the HALO Installation Guide.
Install on Ceiling Electrical Box
This mounting method utilizes a standard electrical box installed in the ceiling. The Surface Mount hole pattern is designed to fit a variety of standard electrical utility boxes without modification.
Figure-5: A side view illustrating the surface mount installed on a standard ceiling electrical box. The network cable passes through a central knockout in the mount and connects to the HALO unit.
Remove the center punch-out from the Surface Mount, run the network cable through the resulting hole, and secure the Surface Mount to the box using either two or four properly sized machine screws.
Wrapping Up
The final steps involve using the HALO Device Manager software (on a Windows computer) to locate the unit on the network and configure its network settings according to the facility's network plan. For more detailed information, consult the HALO Quick Start Guide, HALO Device Manager Manual, or the HALO Administration Guide.
