2 Intended Use

TWN4 Slim is ELATEC's smallest compact and flat RFID reader, smaller than an ID-1 card. It supports a huge range of LF and HF technologies (125 kHz and 13.56 MHz). With support for NFC and Bluetooth Low Energy, the reader enables mobile use cases for data communication and authentication. It can be operated as a standalone unit connected via a standard cable with a micro USB plug to PCs and other devices with USB interface.

The product is for indoor use only and must not be used outdoors.

Any use other than the intended use described in this section, as well as any failure to observe the safety information listed in this document, will be considered misuse and will void the warranty. ELATEC is not responsible for any damage or injuries resulting from any misuse of the product.

4 Technical Data

The reader is equipped with the following antennas:

HF antenna (13.56 MHz)

LF antenna (125 kHz)

BLE (2.4 GHz)

The antenna for the BLE module is integrated in the BLE chip.

For more information, refer to the related product data sheet or other technical documents.

[Description of PCB diagram: The diagram shows the internal components of the TWN4 Slim reader. It highlights the LF antenna as a coil wrapped around the perimeter and the HF antenna as a component integrated within the PCB layers.]

5 Mode of Operation

5.1 Operating Mode

To start operating TWN4 Slim, it simply needs to be connected directly to a host device.

5.2 Power Up

If an external power supply unit is used, the following requirements must be satisfied:

5.3 Enumeration

Once the device has been powered up, it waits for completion of the enumeration by the USB host. As long as the device is not enumerated, it enters a minimum power consumption mode.

5.4 Initialization

After powering up and enumeration, the device turns on the built-in transponder reader logic. The [green LED] is turned on permanently. Some RFID readers need some kind of initialization, which is performed in this step. After successful initialization, the device sounds a short sequence, consisting of a lower tone followed by a higher tone.

5.5 Normal Operation

As soon as the reader has completed the initialization, it enters normal operation. During normal operation, the reader searches for a transponder continuously.

5.6 Detection of a Transponder

If a transponder is detected by the reader, the following actions are performed:

Within the two-second timeout, where the [red LED] is blinking, the transponder that was just recognized will not be accepted again. This prevents the reader from sending identical IDs more than one time to the host.

If, during the two-second timeout of the [red LED], a different transponder is detected, the complete sequence restarts immediately.

5.7 Suspend Mode

Once the host resumes to normal operation mode, this is also signaled via the USB bus. Therefore, the RFID reader will resume to normal operation too.
