Introduction: Making Life Easier and Safer

The Cobra microTALK radio offers convenient and easy communication for various activities such as hiking, biking, working, keeping track of family at events, communicating with travel companions, talking with neighbors, or arranging meeting spots. It is designed for secure and portable use.

Carrying Your microTALK Radio: The radio can be easily carried using the included belt clip or an optional wrist strap. The belt clip attaches securely to a belt, purse, or backpack.

The radio features the following components:

Operation: Using Your Radio

Turning On Your Radio

Press and hold the Mode/Power button until audible tones indicate the radio is on. The radio enters Standby mode.

Quick Start

  1. Press and hold the Mode/Power button to turn on the radio.
  2. Press Channel Up or Down to select a channel. Both radios must be on the same channel.
  3. Press and hold the Talk button while speaking into the microphone (approx. 2 inches / 5 cm away).
  4. Release the Talk button to listen for a response.

Communicating with Another Person

Talking: Press and hold the Talk button, speak into the microphone. Release the button to receive.

Listening: Release the Talk button to receive transmissions. The radio is in Standby mode when buttons are not pressed.

Selecting a Channel

Press the Channel Up or Channel Down buttons. Ensure both radios are on the same channel.

Adjusting Volume

Press the Volume Up or Volume Down buttons. Levels range from 1 to 8. A double beep indicates minimum/maximum levels.

Call Button

Press and release the Call button to send a three-second call tone to the other party.

LED/S.O.S. Flashlight

Press the LED Light button to activate the LED flashlight. Press and hold to activate S.O.S. function. Press and release to turn off.

Auto Squelch/Maximum Range

The radio automatically filters weak transmissions and noise. To temporarily turn off auto squelch or enable maximum range extender, press and hold the Light/Max Range button and the H-M-L button simultaneously until background noise is heard. To turn off the extender, release the Talk button or change channels.

Lock Function

Press and hold the Call/Lock button for 3-4 seconds to lock/unlock the Channel Up/Down, Volume Up/Down, and Mode/Power buttons. A double beep confirms the action, and a lock icon ? appears when active.

microTALK Range

Range varies by terrain and conditions. Flat, open country provides maximum range. Buildings, foliage, and hilly terrain reduce range. Channels 8-14 operate on low power, limiting range.

Battery Status

Battery Low: The Battery Low icon ? will blink, and an audible tone will sound twice before the radio shuts off. Replace or recharge batteries.

Auto Battery Save: If no transmissions occur for 10 seconds, the radio enters Battery Save mode, indicated by the Power Saver icon ⚡. Reception is unaffected.

Operation: Mode Functions

Scrolling Through Mode Functions

Press the Mode/Power button repeatedly to cycle through available features:

Privacy Codes (CTCSS/DCS)

These systems help reduce interference. CTCSS offers 38 codes, and DCS offers 83 codes, totaling 121 privacy codes. Both radios must use the same channel and privacy code system/number for communication. Code 00 disables privacy codes.

Setting CTCSS Privacy Codes

  1. Select a channel. Press Mode/Power until the CTCSS icon and flashing numbers appear.
  2. Use Channel Up/Down to select a privacy code (01-38).
  3. Press Mode/Power to save and proceed, or Talk to return to Standby.
  4. Note: If DCS is active, the display shows "OFF". Press Channel Up/Down to switch to CTCSS.

Setting DCS Privacy Codes

  1. Select a channel. Press Mode/Power until the DCS icon and flashing numbers (00-83) appear.
  2. Use Channel Up/Down to select a DCS privacy code.
  3. Press Mode/Power to save and proceed, or Talk to return to Standby.
  4. Note: If CTCSS is active, the display shows "OFF". Press Channel Up/Down to switch to DCS.

Voice Activated Transmit (VOX)

Enables hands-free transmission. Transmits automatically when you speak. Sensitivity can be adjusted (1-5, 5 being most sensitive) to match voice volume and reduce background noise activation.

Turning VOX On/Off

  1. Press Mode/Power until the VOX icon flashes.
  2. Use Channel Up/Down to select On or Off.
  3. Press Mode/Power to save, or Talk to return to Standby.

Setting VOX Sensitivity

  1. Press Mode/Power until the VOX icon flashes and sensitivity level (e.g., "L5") is displayed.
  2. Use Channel Up/Down to adjust sensitivity.
  3. Press Mode/Power to save, or Talk to return to Standby.

Call Tones

Ten Call Tone Settings: Choose from ten different tones for call alerts. Press Mode/Power until "C" and the tone number appear. Use Channel Up/Down to cycle through tones. Press Mode/Power to save.

VibrAlert® and Call Alert: Set alerts to vibrate + ring ("01") or ring only ("02"). Press Mode until the Call Setting icon flashes. Use Channel Up/Down to select. Press Mode to save.

Roger Beep

Enables an audible tone when you release the Talk button, signaling you've finished speaking. Press Mode/Power until the ROGER BEEP icon flashes. Use Channel Up/Down to select On or Off. Press Mode/Power to save.

Key Tone

When enabled, an audible tone sounds for each button press. Press Mode/Power until the KEY TONE icon flashes. Use Channel Up/Down to select On or Off. Press Mode/Power to save.

Memory Channels

Store up to 10 frequently used channels and privacy code combinations.

Programming a Memory Location

  1. Press MEM/ESC. Memory icon and location number appear.
  2. Use Channel Up/Down to select memory location (0-9).
  3. Press MEM/ESC to enter/edit.
  4. Use Channel Up/Down to select channel (1-22).
  5. Press MEM/ESC. CTCSS/DCS numbers flash.
  6. Use Channel Up/Down to select CTCSS (00-38) or DCS (00-83) code. Press MEM/ESC to switch between CTCSS/DCS.
  7. Press MEM/ESC to save the channel/code to the location. The next location blinks. Press and hold MEM/ESC to save all and return to Standby.

Recalling a Stored Memory Channel

  1. Press MEM/ESC until Memory icon and location number flash.
  2. Use Channel Up/Down to select memory location (0-9).
  3. Press and hold MEM/ESC to return to Standby on the selected memory location.

Channel Scan

Scan all channels automatically. Press Scan until Scan icon and channel numbers appear. Press and hold Scan to start. The radio stops on an incoming transmission for 6 seconds. You can talk on that channel or resume scanning.

Privacy Code Scan

Scan CTCSS (01-38) or DCS (01-83) codes within a selected channel. Press Scan twice for CTCSS or three times for DCS until icons flash. Press and hold Scan to start. Stops on detected transmissions.

NOAA All Hazards Radio Channels

Listen to NOAA weather broadcasts. Press the Weather button until the Weather icon ☁️ and channel number appear. Use Channel Up/Down to change channels. Press Talk to return to two-way mode.

Weather (WX) Alert Mode

Receive NOAA weather and emergency alerts. Press the Weather button twice until the Weather Alert icon ⚡ flashes. Use Channel Up/Down to turn On/Off. Press Weather again to save. Press Talk to return to two-way mode.

Tri-Watch Setup

Scan up to three favorite channels for activity. Press and hold TRI-WATCH for 2 seconds to enter setup. Select channels using Channel Up/Down and confirm with TRI-WATCH. The radio then enters Tri-Watch mode, scanning the programmed channels.

High/Medium/Low (H-M-L) Power

Select transmit power (0.5W, 1W, 2W) for short or long-range communication. Press the H-M-L button to cycle through High, Medium, and Low power settings. The corresponding icon (HI, MED, LO) appears on the display. Channels 8-14 operate only on Low power.

BURP

Expels water from the speaker grille. Press MEM/ESC and H-M-L buttons simultaneously. The radio emits a tone for 8 seconds, displaying "BURP". Hold the radio speaker-down to drain water.

Installation and Charging

Installing Batteries

  1. Remove the belt clip by releasing its latch and sliding it up.
  2. Loosen the two screws on the back of the radio to remove the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert three AA rechargeable or alkaline batteries, observing polarity markings.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover, secure the screws (using the tip of the belt clip if needed, do not overtighten), and re-attach the belt clip.
  5. Note: Do not attempt to charge alkaline batteries. Do not mix old/new or different battery types.

Charging Batteries

Charging in Radio: Insert batteries, connect the USB cable to the charge jack on top of the radio, and plug into a power source. The charging indicator light will stay on until charging is complete. Cobra recommends turning the radio off while charging. Full charge takes approximately 15 hours.

Charging in Desktop Charger: Insert radio(s) into the charger, connect the micro-USB cable to the charger's jack, and plug into a power source. Ensure the charger is near and accessible. Check radio position if the charging light is off.

Note: This radio floats with included NiMH batteries; it may not float with other AA batteries.

Limited One-Year Warranty

Altis Global Limited warrants the product and its components to be free from defects in workmanship and materials for one year from the date of first consumer purchase. This warranty covers repair or replacement at Altis' discretion. It is valid only for the original purchaser in specific jurisdictions and is non-transferable. The warranty is void if the product is sold or transferred, or if modifications/repairs are made by unauthorized personnel. It does not cover damage from misuse, abuse, negligence, acts of God, accidents, commercial use, improper operation, maintenance, or installation, nor does it cover normal wear and tear.

Limitations: Altis disclaims all other warranties, expressed or implied, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Remedies are limited to repair or replacement. Altis is not liable for incidental or consequential damages, including lost profits or savings.

Initial shipping charges are the customer's responsibility, but return shipping within the U.S.A. is at Altis' expense if under warranty.

Safety Information

FCC RF Exposure Requirements

This wireless transceiver operates at low power and is authorized for a duty factor not exceeding 50%. It has been tested and meets FCC RF exposure guidelines when used with designated Cobra accessories. Use only the supplied antenna. Unauthorized modifications may violate FCC regulations.

Normal Position: Hold the transmitter approximately 2 inches (5 cm) from the face with the antenna pointed up and away.
