General Assembly:

  1. Attach the tail cone using double-sided tape or glue.
  2. Clip the rudder hinges onto the rod in the vertical stabilizer.
  3. Repeat this process for the elevator pushrod. Note: The side of the plastic ball-link with a faint flat ring molded into it is the side that pushes onto the ball.
  4. Secure the horizontal stabilizer using the supplied 2 M3 x 14mm screws.
  5. Install the rudder pushrod "Z" link through the servo horn, then connect the ball link to the rudder control horn.
  6. Slide the woven carbon spar through the fuselage, and slide one of the wings on part way. Connect the wing servos via the multi-connector, then slide the wing the rest of the way until you hear an audible click. Check the wing is held securely. Repeat this process for the other wing.
  7. Install the folding propeller assembly by sliding the hub onto the motor shaft and securing it in place with the M3x4mm grub screw. Ensure a small gap is left between the back of the hub and the front of the fuselage. Once secure, attach the spinner using the 2 PM2x8mm screws.
  8. Attach your chosen 4S 3000 ~ 4000mAh battery in the position shown using hook and loop tape.
  9. The image shows the stowage position in the fuselage for the main spar when it is not being used.

The basic assembly of your Avios Kobuz is now complete.

Setting Up:

  1. Install your receiver and connect the servo leads into their corresponding channels. If you have a computer transmitter and can set up crow-braking, bypass the PCB connections and use separate extension leads for each wing servo.
  2. Connect the flight battery to the ESC to power up the electronics. With the model now armed, ensure all servos are centered and all control surfaces are level. Adjust by turning the ball links by hand until the control surfaces are level as shown. Note: For safety reasons, this should be done with the props removed from the model.
  3. Check that all control surfaces are moving in the correct direction when operated by the transmitter, as shown in the diagrams.

Control Throws:

The Kobuz handles very well in flight, requiring a good pre-flight setup for optimum handling and performance. Use the recommended settings before flying.

Control Surface Deflections:

C of G Setting:

The recommended center of gravity (CG) for the Kobuz is 55-60mm from the leading edge of the wing. Your Kobuz should balance near this point with a 3000mAh ~ 4000mAh 4S LiPo installed. Adjust the battery position as necessary to achieve the correct CG, then secure it in the battery bay with hook & loop tape.

Balance the model inverted with your fingers on the top of the wing. The model should balance slightly nose-down within the recommended CG position. For first flights, balance near the forward 55mm mark. After test flying, adjust the CG as necessary to suit your piloting skills.

Aerostar ESC Start-up Procedure:

  1. Turn on your transmitter and set the throttle to the low/off position.
  2. Connect your flight battery to the model.
  3. The motor will beep 4 times, indicating a 4S battery has been connected.
  4. When the motor emits 2 beeps, the self-test procedure is finished, and the ESC is ready.

The Reversing lead (RVS) will be marked from the servo box in the wing. The RVS function requires a spare channel with a 2-position switch assigned to it. Plug the RVS lead into the spare channel. When you flick the switch, RVS should activate (when the motor is at 50% throttle or lower).

If the RVS function is not set, download the Aerostar RVS manual from the HobbyKing website for instructions.

With assembly and setup complete, your Avios Kobuz should be ready for flight. Read the following pages for advice before flying.

Flying Tips:

Before flying, double-check your controls: Left aileron should move up for right roll, right aileron up for left roll. Back stick should move the elevator up, forward stick should move the elevator down. Ensure the model balances correctly on the CG.

Perform a radio range check before your first flight.

To hand-launch, hold the Kobuz just above head height, facing into the wind, or have a helper assist. Apply 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Launch smoothly into the wind. The model will gain airspeed quickly. Keep it straight and climb to a safe height. Adjust trims for straight and level flight. If it's not flying correctly, land and adjust the radio or pushrod lengths.

Once trimmed, explore the Kobuz's flight characteristics. Full power climbs are excellent. At altitude, turn off the motor, let the prop fold, and dive for speed. The Kobuz retains speed well, allowing for numerous loops and rolls without motor power. Use elevator gently to avoid bleeding off speed. Fly maneuvers smoothly, maintaining speed.

For landing, the Kobuz tends to float. Use flaps to slow down for spot landings. Fly a circuit at a comfortable height. Downwind, close the throttle and fold the prop. Control speed with the elevator. On the base leg, deploy flaps. With correct speed, trim changes will be minimal. Line up on finals and glide in. Avoid excessive nose-down attitude. Even with full flaps, the streamlined airframe will cause it to float. A gentle round-out and flare will ensure a smooth landing.

For advanced setups, consider crow braking (butterfly braking): flaps down, ailerons up simultaneously. This provides drag from flaps and reduced lift from up-ailerons, acting as spoilers. This slows the glider significantly for landing. Down elevator compensation may be needed with crow braking.

After your maiden flight, recharge batteries and enjoy more flying. Your fellow pilots will be impressed. Enjoy your Avios Kobuz RC glider.
