MOOER PREAMP MODEL X Owner's Manual
This manual provides comprehensive information on the MOOER PREAMP MODEL X digital preamp pedal.
Precautions
Power Supply
Connect the designated AC adapter to an AC outlet of the correct voltage. Use only an AC adapter supplying 9V DC, 300mA. Unplug the adapter when not in use or during electrical storms.
Location
To avoid deformation, discoloration, or serious damage, do not expose the unit to the following conditions:
- Direct sunlight or other heat sources
- Excessively dusty or dirty locations
- High humidity or moisture
- Magnetic fields
- Strong vibrations or shocks
Radio Frequency Interference
Radios and televisions nearby may experience reception interference. Operate the unit at a suitable distance from these devices.
Cleaning
Clean only with a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, slightly moisten the cloth. Do not use abrasive cleansers, cleaning alcohol, paint thinners, wax, solvents, cleaning fluids, or chemical-impregnated wiping cloths.

Top Panel
The MOOER PREAMP MODEL X features a comprehensive top panel for control and connectivity:
- 01: DC 9V IN: Power input jack for a compatible 9V DC, 300mA center-negative power supply.
- 02: GAIN Knob: Adjusts the input gain level.
- 03: LEVEL Knob: Adjusts the overall output volume.
- 04: MID Knob: Adjusts the middle frequency.
- 05: SAVE Button: Scrolls through 14 preset slots. Press and hold to save the current preset. The LED color indicates cab sim status (BLUE for off, RED for on).
- 06: BASS Knob: Adjusts the bass frequency.
- 07: TREBLE Knob: Adjusts the treble frequency.
- 08: SAVE LED: Indicates cab simulation status (BLUE: off, RED: on).
- 09: CH A Footswitch: Toggles Channel A on/off in normal mode; scrolls up through presets in select mode.
- 10: CH B Footswitch: Toggles Channel B on/off in normal mode; scrolls down through presets in select mode.
- 11: Preset Indicator LED: Shows the selected preset slot (BLUE for 1-7, PURPLE for 8-14).
- 12: INPUT Jack: 1/4" mono audio input for guitar.
- 13: Preset Model List: Displays factory preset names.
- 14: OUTPUT Jack: 1/4" mono audio output.
- 15: USB Port: Type-C USB port for connecting to a computer for preset management, IR loading, and firmware updates.
- 16: USB LED: Indicates USB connection status.
Recommend Setup
The PREAMP MODEL X can be connected in two primary configurations:
Connect to Power Amplifier
Guitar -> Pre-Effect Pedal (optional) -> PREAMP MODEL X (with cab sim ON) -> RETURN of Amplifier/Power Amplifier.
Connect to FRFR (Full Range Flat Response) Device
Guitar -> Pre-Effect Pedal (optional) -> PREAMP MODEL X (with cab sim OFF) -> FRFR Device (e.g., mixer, PA system, audio interface).
Instructions
1. Preset Select
- Press the SAVE button to scroll through preset slots 1-14.
- Press both CH. A and CH. B footswitches simultaneously to enter preset select mode. In this mode, CH. A scrolls up, and CH. B scrolls down through presets.
2. Channel Switch
The PREAMP MODEL X has 14 preset slots, each storing two channel settings. In normal mode, press CH. A or CH. B to select the corresponding channel. The respective footswitch LED will illuminate. Pressing the same footswitch again bypasses the signal, turning off both LEDs.
Note: The Preamp Model X editor software can be used to configure channels A and B.
3. Preset Editing & Saving
Rotate the adjustment knobs to edit parameters. The Preset Indicator blinks when changes are unsaved. Press and hold the SAVE button to save. The Preset Indicator blinks rapidly and then stays lit upon successful save.
Notes: Presets are not saved if:
- You switch to another preset patch before saving.
- You bypass the currently selected channel before saving.
4. Cab Sim On/Off
The PREAMP MODEL X features three global cabinet simulations. Press the CH. B footswitch and SAVE button simultaneously to toggle cab simulation on/off. The SAVE button LED is RED when cab sim is ON and BLUE when OFF.
The MOOER STUDIO editor software allows selection from three different cab sim files or loading third-party IR/GIR files.
5. Factory Reset
To perform a factory reset, unplug the power cord. Press and hold the SAVE button while plugging the power cord back in. The PRESET LED will blink. Release the button. The blinking LED confirms a successful reset. All presets and imported data files will be cleared and reset to factory defaults.
6. Firmware Update (Manual Boot)
Update firmware using the editor software. To manually boot into update mode:
- Power off the device.
- Press and hold both footswitches and the SAVE button while powering on.
- The Preset Indicator will blink in different colors, indicating update mode.
- Connect the device to a computer via USB cable.
- Open the MOOER PREAMP MODEL X editor software; an update window will appear.
- Click START to begin the update. Wait for completion.
Preamp Model X MOOER Studio
The MOOER STUDIO editor software allows management of preset patches, importing GNR amp model sample files, IR/GIR cabinet simulation files, backing up presets, and updating firmware.
Download
Visit the official MOOER website (www.mooeraudio.com) and navigate to the Download page. Find "Preamp Model X", select the appropriate OS version, and start the download.
OS System Requirements:
- Windows: Win7 or higher
- Mac OS: 10.11 or higher
Connection
After installation, connect the PREAMP MODEL X to a computer using the included USB cable. Open the editor software.
If the editor software version mismatches the device firmware, a firmware update window will prompt. You can update immediately or later.
The connection is disconnected by default. Click the CONNECT button to establish a connection.
Software Interface Description
The MOOER STUDIO software interface provides the following key areas:
- 1. Connect Button: Connects/disconnects the device to the editor software. Ensure it's set to CONNECTED.
- 2. Language: Select between Chinese and English.
- 3. Theme Color: Choose between daylight or night mode.
- 4. Update: Updates the PREAMP MODEL X firmware or the editor software. Check the MOOER website for the latest versions.
- 5. Factory Reset: Enters the factory reset menu. Resets imported data and user presets to factory defaults.
- 6. Setting: Allows backup and restore operations.
- 7. Native Preset Area: Displays preset files stored on the computer.
- 8. Amp Model Area: Shows available amp models for the PREAMP MODEL X. GNR files can be imported/deleted here.
- 9. Device Preset Patch: 14 slots for presets on the PREAMP MODEL X. Drag slots to the native preset area to export.
- 10. Save: Saves edited parameters for the currently selected preset.
- 11. Channel-A Area: Edit the tone for Channel A.
- 12. Channel-B Area: Edit the tone for Channel B.
- 13. Cab Sim Area: Turn cab sim on/off, select cab sim type, and import/delete cab sim files (IR/GIR).
Instructions: Preset Management
Export Preset Files to Computer
Select a preset from slots 1-14 and drag it to the native preset area to export. The exported preset will be found in the native preset area.
Import Preset File from Computer to Device
Select a preset from the native preset area and drag it to one of the 14 device preset slots.
Name the Exported Preset
Right-click on a preset in the native preset area and select "Rename".
Preset File Location
Click the folder icon ? on the right of the native preset area to open the target folder for preset files. You can find the .pfs preset file here. Presets can be copied and shared.
Place preset files from other users into this folder and click the refresh icon ? to see them in the native preset area.
Notes: Preset files include amp model parameters for both channels. GNR/GIR/IR files are separate.
GNR/GIR Sample File
The PREAMP MODEL X includes 14 factory amp models, each with two channels. You can expand your tone by loading amp model/cab sim files created with MNRS technology.
Download GNR/GIR File
Click the icon ? in the amp model area to visit the MOOER STUDIO official website (www.mooerstudio.com), the official tone sharing platform. GNR/GIR sample files created by MOOER and its users are available for download. GNR files are amp models captured by GE Labs, and GIR files are cab sims captured by GE Labs.
Notes on Sample Files:
- Preamp sample files and entire amplifier sample files are in GNR format.
- Cabinet simulation samples are in GIR format.
- IR files are cabinet simulation files in .wav format.
- When using a FRFR device:
- Turn ON cab sim for preamp sample files.
- Turn OFF cab sim for entire amplifier sample files.
GNR/GIR/IR Loading
GNR/GIR/IR File Loading
Download the GNR file. Select an amp model in the amp model area. Right-click on it or click the folder icon ? to open a pop-up window. Select the GNR file location and import it to the target amp model slot.
GIR/IR Cab Sim File Loading
PREAMP MODEL X supports loading GIR files from MOOER STUDIO or third-party IR files in .wav format. Right-click on a cab sim in the cab sim area or click the folder icon ?. Select the GIR/IR file location in the pop-up window and import it to the target cab sim slot.
Notes: You can import multiple GNR/GIR/IR files at once. Select files in the pop-up window; they will be imported sequentially into the device slots until all are filled. Extra files will be skipped.
Backup/Restore
Delete Imported File
Select an amp model or cab sim and click the trash icon ?️ to delete the sample file. The amp model/cab sim will revert to factory default settings.
Backup
Click the backup icon ? on the top and select BACKUP. Choose a save location, name the backup file, and confirm. A backup file (.bfl format) will be created.
Restore
Click the restore icon ? on the top and select RESTORE. Select a backup file from the pop-up window and confirm. The restore process will complete shortly.
Notes: Backup files include loaded GNR/GIR/IR files and preset parameters.
Firmware Update & Factory Reset
Firmware Update
Click the update icon ⬆️ on the top and select FIRMWARE UPDATE to enter update mode. Click START to begin. Wait for the update to complete.
Factory Reset
Click the reset icon ⚙️ to enter the factory reset menu. Click YES to confirm. After a few seconds, the reset is complete. All imported GNR/GIR/IR files and preset patches will be deleted and reset to factory defaults.
