1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and efficient operation of your ONKYO FR-7GX CD/MD Tuner Amplifier. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the unit and keep it for future reference. The FR-7GX is a versatile audio system featuring a CD player, MiniDisc (MD) recorder/player with MDLP support, and an AM/FM tuner, designed to deliver high-quality audio performance.

2. Safety Information

To ensure safe operation and prevent damage, observe the following precautions:

  • Power Source: Connect the unit only to an AC 100V, 50/60Hz power supply.
  • Ventilation: Do not block ventilation openings. Ensure adequate space around the unit for proper airflow. The top panel features ventilation grilles (see Figure 2.1).
  • Moisture: Do not expose the unit to rain or moisture. Do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the unit.
  • Foreign Objects: Do not insert any foreign objects into the unit's openings.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to service this unit yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.
  • Speaker Impedance: Ensure connected speakers have an impedance between 4Ω and 16Ω. Connecting speakers with lower impedance can damage the amplifier.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the unit from its packaging. Retain the packing materials for future transport or storage.

3.2 Connecting Components

Before making any connections, ensure the unit is turned off and unplugged from the power outlet.

  • Speakers: Connect your speakers to the SPEAKER terminals on the rear panel. Observe correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). The FR-7GX supports speakers with an impedance of 4Ω to 16Ω.
  • Antenna: Connect the supplied FM and AM antennas to their respective terminals for radio reception.
  • External Audio Devices: Use RCA cables to connect external audio sources (e.g., cassette deck, turntable with pre-amp) to the LINE IN, TAPE IN, or CDR IN terminals.
  • Optical Digital Output: If connecting to a digital recording device or DAC, use an optical cable with the DIGITAL OUT terminal.
  • Subwoofer Output: Connect an active subwoofer to the SUBWOOFER PRE-OUT terminal for enhanced bass.

3.3 Power Connection

After all audio connections are made, plug the power cord into a suitable AC outlet.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Basic Playback (CD/MD)

  1. Press the STANDBY/ON button to power on the unit.
  2. Select the desired source (CD or MD) using the INPUT selector.
  3. For CD: Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open the CD tray. Place a CD on the tray and press OPEN/CLOSE again to close it. The unit supports CD-R/RW playback.
  4. For MD: Insert a MiniDisc into the MD slot.
  5. Press the PLAY button to start playback.
  6. Adjust the volume using the large VOLUME knob. The unit features a motor-driven volume for precise control.

4.2 Tuner Operation (FM/AM)

  1. Select the TUNER input.
  2. Use the tuning controls to select your desired FM or AM station. The unit supports FM wideband.
  3. Utilize the FM auto preset function to store up to 30 stations.

4.3 Recording (CD to MD / External Source to MD)

The FR-7GX features high-speed ATRAC DSP and 24-bit processing for high-quality digital recording.

  • CD to MD Dubbing: Insert a blank MD. Select CD as the source. Press the CD DUBBING button. The unit supports 2x speed CD to MD dubbing. The DLA Link function automatically sets the digital recording level.
  • External Source to MD: Select the external input (LINE, TAPE, or CDR). Insert a blank MD. Press the REC button to start recording.
  • Synchro Recording: Use the synchro recording function to automatically start recording when the source begins playback.
  • Dubbing Mode "FADE": This mode allows for fade-in/fade-out effects during dubbing.
  • MD Digital Recording Level Adjustment: Fine-tune recording levels for optimal sound quality.

4.4 MDLP and Group Functions

The FR-7GX supports MDLP (MiniDisc Long Play) modes (LP2 and LP4) for extended recording times, and Group functions for organizing tracks on an MD.

  • MDLP: When recording, select LP2 or LP4 mode to extend recording capacity up to approximately 320 minutes on an 80-minute disc (LP4 mode).
  • Group Function: Use the GROUP button to create and manage groups of tracks on your MD, allowing for easier navigation and playback of specific sections.

4.5 Advanced Playback and Editing

  • Program Playback: Program up to 25 songs for both CD and MD playback in a desired order.
  • Chain Repeat: Continuously repeat playback between CD and MD.
  • MD Editing: Use the DIVIDE and COMBINE functions to edit tracks on an MD. The MD editing rehearsal function allows you to confirm edit points before execution.
  • MULTIJOG Dial: This dial simplifies track selection and title input.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Unit

Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, dampen the cloth with a mild detergent solution and wipe gently, then dry with a clean cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, alcohol, benzene, or thinners, as these can damage the finish.

5.2 Disc Care

Handle CDs and MDs by their edges. Keep them clean and free of dust and fingerprints. Store discs in their cases when not in use.

6. Troubleshooting

If you experience problems with your unit, consult the following table before seeking service.
